CEED Candidates, Dont give up hope!

Dear CEED Candidates,

Yesterday you may have appeared for CEED 2011. Many people told me it was very tough and may not make through! This is pretty disconcerting. From my experience, each year the cut-offs for IITs and NID varies considerably. It might just happen that even if you have low score it does not mean you have to reappear for CEED next year. Perhaps you can just make it! I know a few people who scored less in CEED but very good in Design Aptitude Test (DAT) and interviews and are studying at NID.
So plz dont give up hope. Just fill out the forms and appear for the DAT and interviews.

Best of luck :)

WHEN IS THE NOTIFICATION FOR DAT IS RELEASED ?

Ashish Khare said...

heyy plz give more details about DAT and interviews.

I do not have any idea about the procedure after CEED.

At what minimum score can we apply for DAT ?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Vasu,

You will be personally notified about the DAT through post/e-mail when your application is selscted. This happens in about one week after last date of receipt of application form.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Dear Ashish,

You can read more about DAT and interview in my post Design aptitude test and interview carried out in IIT's and IISc

After CEED, fill out the forms for various institutes. They will call u for DAT, by post, if you are selected.

There is no 'minimum' for DAT. It varies a lot each year and generally top, say, 500 candidates who apply are called.

The CEED 2011 was a copy of 2010 paper with a few minor changes ( Bus stop instead of railway station, hemispheres instead of cones, etc ).

Thanks Prasanna for helping us.
Insights shared in your blog definitely helped in the exam. Hundreds of students join d-schools every year, buy only a handful few like you are kind enough to proactively help aspirants.

Do keep posting .. !

Hi, Saurabh sorry i am replying to your message on someone else's blog. There were questions which were similar to questions in 07, 08 and 2009 paper as well. But the difference was in the markings and the difficulty. It was not a copy of 10 paper but a combination of all the last papers put together and I would say a difficult combination(for me personally).

Hey, Prassana is there a DAT again after CEED for IIT's or is it just a interview?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello,

Here is how it works. CEED score is used to call top 500 (just for reference) applicants to an institute. This is followed by DAT. All 500 are eligible to appear for DAT. From this, say, 150, are selected for interviews. In the interviews, they can fill the number of seats.

Sorry for not clarifying this earlier :(

Best luck.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Dear Saurabh and anon,

Thanks for the input. Guess i'll just have to wait about a month for IIT-B to upload CEED 2011 paper online :(

Ashish Khare said...

Is DAT same for all or is it different for candidates of different fields like Engineering/Fine Arts etc. ?

Ashish Khare said...

..and do you have information about admissions through GATE ?

The brochure says that GATE qualified candidates will also be considered for admission to M.Des programs in IITK n IIScB.

Saurabh Bhide said...

Anonymous ... Yes you are right, it wasn't a 'copy'.

I just used the popular terminology used in our college to say that the paper was similar to the previous papers :)

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Ashish,

DAT is same for all candidates who have applied for the institutes. Maybe there is some competition from fine arts students and vice-versa. Thus, the instututes do not distinguish candidates based on their bachelors degree. Similarly, at IISc and IIT-K, GATE and CEED are just screening exams. The applicants are treated equally.

Hi, Prasanna, this is Srinivasan here. Is DAT different for different design disciplines? For example the automobile designing paper will have questions related to automobile only?
Basically do we apply based on the discipline we are interested in? Thank you.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello
DAT depends on the institutes. Like, in 2007 (the year i appeared for CEED) there was only one DAT, common for all trades at IIT-B, but they changed it next year. so its pretty unpredictable. But that should not really bother you, if you prepare the interview focused in the branch that interests you.

Take care

Srinivasan Pillai said...

Hey, Prasanna do we have to give DAT individually for different institutes wherever we apply? What is the time interface or schedule for all this? If I have to apply in all the three institutes how does it work? Do we give the DAT once just like CEED and then the score of that is used for application for the interview across institutes? If all this happens at the same time how does it work? And thanks to keep that patience while answering all these amateur questions. Thanks a lot. Its a great help.

Vishali said...

I wrote CEED this time. What is the approximate score (out of hundred) required to clear CEED. I am expecting 80+(out of hundred) will tat be enough?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Dear Srinivasan,

Quick replies :)
1. Yes, Each institute holds its own DAT and you have to appear for it!
2. You will need to keep a watch on the websites for the dates of individual institutes. Typically its a couple of week after CEED scores are out
3. You need to watch out, sometimes DATs do clash! NID and IIT-K DATs typically do
4. You will never come to know your DAT score (in this lifetime at least :P)
5. You will understand why the world loves airplanes! Thats the only mode, if NID holds DAT on one day and next day you have to appear for IIT DAT :)

Take care.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Dear Vishali,

There is no fixed cutoff. It varies largely each year and from institute to other. What they generally do is, they select, say, top 500 applicants and call them for DAT and interview. So suppose you apply to NID-B, and many ppl who scored more than you dont, then your chances of getting selected increase. So dont bother about the scores in CEED

Take care

Typical CEED paper! Since it is just a repeat of earlier papers, it is as good as a 'leaked' paper [as you guys back home would want to call it]. But I am sure many 'designers' out there found even this leaked paper difficult. Oh, and dear Saurabh Bhide, thousands of people take up 10th standard exams, 12th standard exams, 5th stand exams across India every year - why don't you keep blogging about it endlessly to 'proactively help aspirants'?

Hi prasanna...i'm quiet confused regarding admission process after taking CEED. Please post a handy graphical representation of this process from taking CEED exam to being a design student at NID or IIT.
This won't be difficult and time consuming.
Thanks.

Hi Mayur,

As per the best of my knowledge CEED score is valid for Indian Institute of Information Technolgy, Design & Manufacturing (Jabalpur), Department of Industrial Design (delhi) only.

For other institutes like MIT (Pune), you can apply directly.

Hi Ayushi,
You have taken an excellent decision to appear for CEED in third year. This way you can improve your score in your final year if you feel like. CEED score is valid 2 years. As a beginning you can begin reading How to prepare for CEED
Best of luck

hey prasanna,

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Masood,
The CEED rank is in terms of percentile. Thus, its relative to where you stand with respect to the highest scoring candidate. Thus your CEED score is not absolute and there is no fixed percentile for passing. So just give your best shot.
First try to finish the questions you feel confident about. For example, if you find Visual Communication part interesting then finish it off first within time you can set for yourself. Then attempt rest of the paper. Focus on finishing the entire paper first then, try to working the details of each part. This way at least you will have suggested at least solution worth a mark
Best of luck :)

Masood said...

thanks..vil try to do so...1 more question plzzz... i read abt attribute method on ur blog its really helpful..can u plzz give some similar techniques for the questions such "find 5 problms in the given object & provide solution for the same" & " draw 5 objects using basic shapes such as 2 cylinders, 2 cones,2wires,2 cubes"...plz xplain vid example...:)

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Masood,
The problems like “Find 5 problems with…” can be solved by first listing the limitations of the product, and how they can be addressed through design modifications. For example, Pressure cooker, when completely filled cannot be lifted with one hand. This can be solved by providing a bucket-like handle on the top.

Attribute method can be used for “draw 5 objects using the given shapes”. First critically evaluate the attributes of the objects given and their combinations. Like, two hemisphere can form a sphere or a wire can assume any shape. Then start by thinking of usefulness of this form. For example, the sphere can form a globe and wires form the support, thus you have a model of earth.

Dear Prasanna

I have qualified MIT-DAT '12 & have received a call for Interview to be held on 6th May.

I am currently pursuing my Final Semester (Engineering).

(1) If college ranks are compared then my present college stands at a higher index relative to MIT, Pune (which also is a reputed institute) but I feel resistant at attending the interview since I wish to pursue PG (Design) from an institute of higher repute.

(2) On the other side, I also believe that the first job mostly depends on skills possessed by candidate that act as assets to the hiring firm along with several other important factors.

(3) I will certainly diversify into Design at some point of my career.

----------------------------------------------------
Two Inter-related questions:

Question 1: I am confused. I have to make one choice & compromise somewhere. What are your suggestions?

Question 2: Alternately, do you suggest me going for Higher studies in Design at MIT this year or at aa time when NID/ IITs finally select me?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Dear Nihit,
First of all I loved the way you have written the query, in a thoughtful and precise way

I personally feel that college ranking has littile or no role to play in choice of institute you wish to do your masters from. MIT does have its own merits, if you compare the course contents against IITs. Yet, I agree with you that its better to do MDes from IIT or IISc, or diploma from NID.
The first job you land in not only depends on your skill set, but also on the institute. For example, in many placement ads I have seen “…candidates from premium institutes will be preferred”. Your portfolio displays your strengths and skills, and it keeps on updating over time, whereas your masters degree is stuck to you for lifetime.
Keeping this in mind, you can choose to join MIT, and focus on competing with an IITian or NIDian purely based on your superior skills. Or you can prepare well for GATE, CEED or whichever relevant entrance exam, apply next year and land in your first design job with a degree from a reputed institute and a very good skill set.
Ultimately you can decide the best course of action. I had chosen the 2nd one.

Best of luck :)

hi Prasanna.. just wanted to say u thanks a lot. i've got selected in CPDM this year. and this is the only blog in whole of the google that gives a perfect idea of what CEED is all about.. well, it has definitely played an important part in whole of my journey. thank you so much and keep on doing the good work !!

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Vinaya,
Hearty congratulations on getting selected to IISc :)
Do u mind sharing few of your experiences during interviews and DAT?

vinayak said...

thanks Prasanna..
the DAT conducted at IISc is very different to that of IDC. IDC had questions more or less same as that of CEED; but IISc had an important part carrying the engineering questions (most of which came from fluid mechanics). so anyone aspiring for iisc should once go through their technical stuffs!!!! well, i hardly found solutions of anyone of them :)
and what i think is that there is more emphasis on interviews !!
i had interview for around half an hour.. they had 5 panel members.. they started with a discussion about touch screen; it's uses and its future... as my background is electrical, they asked some technical question!! and some random questions checking my communication skill!! some general awareness questions etc...

and Prasanna, i didnt forget to mention about your blog too!! they were very happy to know about it...
hey could you tell me how's life at IISc and something about CPDM as well.!!

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Vinayak,
Than you sooo much for sharing your experience. I have copy-pasted you comment as a new post here If you feel any objection towards it, i can take it down

Life at IISc is really nice! i am sure u will enjoy your time there. Also you have full workshop at your disposal and you are free to make whatever you wish to manufacture. The best part about IISc is its research culture. you can make a great career in research at IISc!!

Hope you have a great time man!

Take care

Hello Prasanna,
I read your blog and now you have one more fan.
I am not a designer. I had basic knowledge of photoshop and inkscape. But i used to sketch or draw alot when i was a child. But with time, i left my hobby and then started preparing for engg. I am doing CSE. I don't think i'll be able to grasp more technical stuff. But i very badly want to study further.
Recently i came to know about M.Des .
Now i think, through this i can again live my drawing moments. But i am confused & also a bit scared( of failure) wether a newbie(like me) in designing will be able to crack CEED or NID .
I have 2-3 logo's in my portfolio. That's it.
I am in 4th year & i guess now only 4 months are left for entrance. Should i give a try at this or only talented people who have not given up on their passion/hobby can clear these entrances.

Please reply. I am very confused.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Anish Kumar,
Thanks for subscribing :)
I feel that if you still have passion for sketching and an eye for detail, you can easily clear CEED or NID entrance test. No one has stopped you from giving an honest attempt. i recommend you to give your best shot to CEED and NID entrance test. If you need help from my side, this blog is there, and you can always mail me.

Best luck :)

vinod said...

sir after crack ceed.... do we have to apply application for different institute? and then they call us for DAT and intervw

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Vinod,
you need to refer to web-pages of the institute you wish to apply for. You will find the relevant procedure. There is no centralized form for this.

Unknown said...

Does academic's background matter at the time of admission process in M.Des at any Institute can you tell me ?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi vijay,
The academic background does not matter as long as you are fulfilling eligibility criteria and can clear the interview. For example, IISc offers MDes in Product design and Engineering at Center for Product Design and Manufacturing. Here, you are expected to know some basics of manufacturing. If you are a computer science graduate, but you can clear the interview, then its alright.

Unknown said...

I was thinking if you can throw some light on the placements of MIT Design(pune). Is it good enough investing 3.5 lacs per year for the course fee?
Thanks for hearing out.

Hello debarati ,
I dont know anyone from MIT Design.Looking at the course contents it appears to be a great place, but your question requires to know some alumni from this place

Hi Prasanna bhaiya... i'm shuv from chennai.. i appeared fr ceed 2013 and got selected for iit delhi and iiitdm kancheepuram.. i did choose iiitdm over iitd. this was mainly bcoz i was looking for a course tht would let me be in touch with my stream ie. mechanical engineering.. and the course in iiitdm [M.des.mechanical system design] looked ideal to me when compared to the course in iitd which is inter-disciplinary. Today morning i was given a deadline of 24 hours to confirm my interest to be admitted fr the course in iit delhi...the course at iitd is not as technical oriented as the course in iiitdm.. then again iit delhi has a brand value... i am in a great mental pressure now and i dont want to regret my decision at a later stage...i wish to see myself working on something that would put my mechanical engineering skills into use..mainly the automotive industry.. should i prefer "brand value" over "syllabus" and join iit delhi?.. please help..thanks.
