Resources for CEED exam

Many aspirants ask  a question that what are the best resources for studying for CEED. This post is designed in reply.

Self study is the best approach for CEED. The Teacupblog has been written keeping this in mind. The resources so as to speak are of two types: Hard and soft ones.

The hard ones are:
  • One good pencil ( I recommend BILT matrix Charcoal Black HB2, cost Rs. 3),
  • One pack of “typing paper” (cos that’s what the CEED paper is printed on, costs Rs. 30/100 sheets)
  • Good eraser (I recommend Faber castell)
The soft ones are :
  • Ability to generate ideas at reasonable speed,
  • Ability to sketch fairly good picture of the idea
  • Ability to think which is unlikely to be thought by most people.
I guess these are the only resources needed.

The best way to develop this is shown on this blog, but its subjective. It has worked for me and for many, but you can explore the methods and find out what works best for you.

Hi Prasanna,
Could you tell me where i can find previous years question papers for NID PG?
It would be of great help.
Thanks in advance
Ashwin

Hi Ashwin,
Unlike previous year CEED papers hosted on IIT-B site, NID only gives a sample paper. You can download it here

But is it safe to assume that the pattern is roughly similar to CEED? preparing using previous CEED papers would help right?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi ashwin,
Its hard to tell that. Actually apart from availability of NID PG sample paper, i have very limited knowledge of the test itself. Maybe you may need to find a source that gives such information.

hi prassana i want to know more about the msc engineering degree in design ,what is the difrrence in the course content

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Niranjan,
Product design deals with design of new products using certain methodology. MSc deals with creating those methodology through research. MSc students do not necessarily create new products. You can read about the MSc product design course offered at IISc here

Hello Prasanna Sir,
I have been trying free hand sketching these days.
Till today i used normal pencils ( NATRAJ one ) :D ..
but now i think i have to run the extra mile..
so i bought H,HB,2B,4B,6B grade pencils..
i was trying to sketch everyday objects..
i was sketching a spoon, but can you tell me how to sketch like that even in my sketch, shining feature of spoon can be seen ( i hope you get what i am trying to say e.g:- white shine we usually see on steel glasses or sometimes on hairs of any individual's picture ) ..
and also i am wondering what grade of pencil to use for shadows, etc,.
Can you please tell me : which grade of pencil is good for which purpose ?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Anish,
From my observation and the lessons we underwent in classical sketching, there are two ways to do shading. One is solid filling the areas of the interest and another is using cross-hatching. I like the second one and hence i never explored the option of going for different grades of pencils. The advantage of the cross-hatching method is it can be extended to mediums like ball-pens, that do not have varying shades by itself. You can have a look at this link for details of this techniques. Also you can have a look at my work here

thank you sir..
very nice article..
after reading this i got to know that i used "scumbling" method for shading ( till now ) ..
Thank you very much..

Hello Anish,
I also dont know about the names of the methods :(

hi Prasanna,
one more que....
how to design the products for visually impaired(fully blind)...
i.e. what are the factors essential for product designing for visually impaired.
e.g. design a pair of scissors for visually impaired

Nitin said...

in product designing que we have to write at least 5 distinct factor essential for designing...also at least 3 concepts through pencil sketches....
my que is what is maen by factor and concepts...

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Nitin,
For an question related to product design, your solution must be really innovative. you can consider many factor depeding on the product design, but it should be made very user friendly and should look good!

For a scissor that will be used by visually impaired, you need to consider a situation, where they can only "feel" and no injury is caused while feeling. so you should isolate the sharp edges somehow.
another factor is, how will you guide the scissor in a straigt line without "seeing"? since most cuts made with scissor are straight.
You can close your eyes to get a feel and understand the products shortcoming in picking up, using and keeping it back

Enjoy

hi prasanna,
i am bharadwaj.thanks for this valuble information.I have a doubt about using of drawing materials in CEED exam.May i use kneaded eraser in exam.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Kedar,
I feel that you can use kneadable eraser in CEED. In fact i am sure it will serve much better as it will not damage the fragile paper on which CEED paper is printed

Hello rathod ,
I tried to look up this info on IITB CEED site. I didnt find any relevant information on this. I recommend you to call up IITB and ask about it. Sorry that i could not help :(

Hello Prasanna
I am fresher mechanical engineering graduate and currently working in a manufacturing company(auto-ancillary). Due to lack of guidance i couldn't appear for any for CEED. I am good at drawing. As far as designing skills are concerned i am ok with them. Please guide me.

Hello,
You can write to me on my email pg2005.pg@gmail.com with any doubts yo have. Meanwhile, you can solve previous years ceed papers and send the solutions to me. I can suggest you improvements

hello,
can you please throw some light on how to attempt the product designing questions... as in the format in which you need to answer it... if possible some solution sets to previous years qt. papers

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Prerna,
Answering product design questions is pretty straight forward. First show a 3D view of the product, and label it, along with the material. Show one more view that shows how the product is used. For example, if you have a watch, then the solution will be a big 3D view of the watch in the center, a hand wearing the watch and list of features, with labels. Arrange all these suitably in the space provided. Though i dont have any solution posted on the blog, there is an example i can provide from a portfolio. You can view here
Hope i was able to answer your doubt

Hi Prasanna,
how to make a presentable portfolio for round 2. I have seen your portfolios and they are very inspiring and great. In view of test, what should I compile/select in my portfolio? what if I have no objects/art-work/sketches/concept to add in my portfolio? how should I prepare for it?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Harsh,
I would like to know what stream are you preparing the portfolio for?
Second, i feel, right now, you can focus on CEED. After CEED, you will have ample of time to make a nice portfolio, and you can even include the ides you have generated during the CEED preparation :)
Further, you can email me or message me on Facebook
All the best :)

hello sir,
I have a doubt regarding ceed part A. Is there negative marking in part A???

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi shweta,
If you go through CEED 2012 paper you will find that there is negative marking in Part A. There was negative marking in CEED 2013 paper in Part A too! so there must be the same in this years paper
