Mrinal’s Experience who cracked NID Ahmedbad, Product Design

Dear friends,

In the last post Surbhi shared her story how she secured admission to NID, Bangalore at IID

Another of our friend, and a regular reader of this blog, Mrinal Sharma, secured admission to NID Ahmedbad for Product design course.

I really want to thank Mrinal for sharing his story with us. This is what Mrinal wants to say,

Getting into NID Ahmedbad for PGDPD was always my dream and that too into Product Design, was like cherry on the cake. Its just because of your guidance all throughout the year , I made it into NID Ahmedbad.

Being a design graduate from NIFT Chennai , Accessory design(2007-11) and worked almost a year for Jharcraft as a designer , design was not just a new field for me. The theme was to unexplored the hidden design elements within and around us. From a needle to a train. this is what all NID exam is all about. To clear the first phase of NID is pretty challenging, if you could make through it, you are almost half to reach NID.  The first exam is pretty tough, as it covers every aspect of design from sketching, color theory, general knowledge , visualization and the basic to represent your ideas on a plane sheet within the context given in a specified time.

The best thing you can do is -reading habbit of  a english newspaper(preferably TOI), as it can be really helpful towards solving the questions paper either in CEED or NID

There is no fixed syllabus for NID Prepration, but yes there are certain topics that should be dealt carefully like : sketching, ceramics, comic story making, light &nshadows, art movement, color theory and so on.

I could not forget your help sir, everytime I had any problem regarding any question I could mail u without any hesistation, and you were like happy to help in best possible time and way. Really cheers to Teacup Blog

I would  always be happy to help others like i used to get from your side. My email id : mrinalnift10@gmail.com. Plz drop in mails(for aspirants) if you have any certain query regarding NID Prepration.

Cheers to Prasanna Sir and his TEACUP blog.

i would like to know the course content for post graduate product design at nid.. what is the curriculum?

Unknown said...

hey mrinaland Prasanna ji!.Gud to hear ur story mrinal.Cheers :)..!

Can u explain NID exam pattern..i mean CEED now has 2 parts-Part A Objective and then B with sketching and problem solving..

U made it clear that NID has no syllabus..then atleast a pattern rite lyk part A and B..and i m intrested in Strategic Design management..so there will be different papers for different field?..Please specify..Thank You :)

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Sanjana,

The entrance paper for every branch is different. Yet, the pattern is still not clear. Sometimes, they do ask many objective questions and sometimes the questions are subjective. There are essays asked sometimes, while on other times, the paper contains drawing extensively. None-the-less, the time is always short, so plan your strategy as soon as you get the question paper.
All the best :)

Unknown said...

hello,

Beisdes NID..I am attempting ceed too..will that also hav a stream specific paper? i mean i ve seen previous papers..if u want VC should u be attempting vc questions only?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Sanjana,

I think I can help you making a good portfolio, because, the principles of design remain universally the same, and this is what they see in your portfolio. Also I am well aware about the course content so we can present what they are looking for in a suitable candidates' works. Unfortunately i cannot help you with studio test at NID, but i am sure it wont be that tough. Meanwhile i will try to find out someone from strategic design to help you.

After appearing for your CEED exam, you will be facing interviews in IITs and IISc. In these interviews you might be asked why you did not attempt VC questions if you are so interested in VC. If you have a good answer for this, you can attempt any other question. Typically, you can tell "VC is my interest, but the other question was less time consuming".

Meanwhile, while you are preparing for CEED, which will also help you in NID entrance, you can send me your solutions for evaluation.

All the best

Dear Sir,

I cleared my NID UG entrances twice but failed both of the times at the last stage. Being from a family of academics I dont get much support that'll let me stay focused enough to still manage an PG course. I know I have skills but I just cannot channelize it upto the final lap.
Is there any difference in the way exams are conducted in UG's and PG's?
What approach can I go along with?
I'd be extremely grateful of your help.

Hello Swati,
I am feeling sad hearing your story. I really wish i could guide you for the NID UG exams, but i have no clue about them. I have helped people for masters in NID, but not for UG till date. If you are making a portfolio, i can review it and suggest you tips to improve, but i cant help you directly with exams :(

Hello sir,
Are there any useful tips you would like to give to NID aspirants? Is there any site where we can find previous years papers? And how many people usually give the exam every year?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Gauri

I have composed some tips for NID entrance exam here

NID have not official released the entrance exam papers online. Though CEED papers give a good set of practice questions for NID entrance. Besides that, you can find some questions in success stories as well. Some people still find NID entrance slightly difficult than CEED.

My best guess is that about 1000 to 2000 people appear for NID entrance everyyear

I want to do strategic design management but don't have a clue about it.graphic design also allures me but my drawing skills aren't that great. Please help

Hi,
I never appeared for NID entrance myself, but based on the experience of others, i can tell you that for SDM, you would need to have a different kind of mind set. I look at it as a cross between MBA and MDes. I can guide you much better over email
you can drop me a mail on the address that appears below my profile picture :)

Hi

I am currently pursuing Bachelors in Management Studies from University of Delhi. I happened to chance upon the Strategic Design Management Programme. Is it a good option for a management student to apply for it? I am somehow not able to figure out what exactly the programme has to offer.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Sanjivni,
Strategic Design Management, based on my understanding, deals with how technical side of design is merged with the bigger buisiness goals. That is to say that this branch deals with designing for the business goals rather than simply the users. Apart from buisiness oriented skills the candidate would need to have good grasp on design. If you feel you have the inclination for this, you can surely try it :)
All the best

Hi Nikhil,
The DAT for NID will be same for the courses, but the studio test, which is held for the shortlisted candidates, will be course specofoc.

Hii Prasanna Sir,
I got through DAT for SDM and NMD. I graduated from NIFT BF Tech and worked in IT dept. I'm having really tough time figuring out the projects for portfolio. I don't think i have any project as of now to put in portfolio. Also plz suggest me reading/writing/sketching/other practice which can help my chances of selection. I have roughly one and half months to work, which i would like to use well.

Hello Sir, I want to do M. Des. from NID ahamdabad. I just want to know that for product design, Is the question paper of Design Aptitude Test is different. and how i can get previous years' question papers and how to prepare for it, if it has no fixed syllabus.
Thank You

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Pranay,
DAT is entrance exam for NID. For NID DAT the paper is branch specific. Unfortunately NID has not released their DAT paper. You can come to know last years paper from people who have appeared for it.

I suggest people to appear for both CEED and NID DAT, because CEED preparation is often enough to clear the NID DAT, whether or not you want to get into IIT.

All the best :)
