Chetan's Opinion on CEED 2014 paper

Chetan Yadav is a regular reader of TeaCupBlog. He appeared for CEED this weekend (1 Dec 2013) and here is his opinion about the paper. I liked the way he used resources at hand to solve one of the questions :)

Paper was cool, found PartA easier than that of last time..but had some questions which were completely luck dependent...i made sure not to make ANY guesses in those. And question like A4 sheet size was- free ke marks, i once studied it but had forgotten at the exam time...had brain open at the time so took my ruler out and measured the admit card. There was another ques of golden ratio with a square and adjoining rectangle to it as the figure, i applied brain here as well, took the ruler out again and measured the sides of square and rectangle right on the monitor...ehehe...square had 2.5*2.5 while rect. had 1.5*2.5, calculated 2.5/(2.5+1.5); =app 1.6 And got the answer. I did this last yr as well which had ratio of wide screen, then i had measured the dimensions of the monitor i had :p
PartB; Ques1-sketch a man opening a fridge OR sketch a scooter with a man standing next to it. Ques2- write a description of club house scene, pic was given. Ques3- 3uses of umbrella apart from conventional use of protection against rain and sun. Optional1-design website interface for a movie complex. Optional2-comic strip, which needed min 20 frames (who has time to sketch 20 frames that too when scene was to show a crowded railway platform). Optional3- problem and solution regarding street drains etc...The only problem was...i found the PartB a little lengthy, don't know about others. For me, it was so lengthy that i didn't have time to color anything :( But no still life sketching question was a treat, i just can't sketch a plate and stuff on it, hehe

i too had same problem with part -B ,
prassanna sir, i wanna ask u tht in product design question, i had drawn very badly cz i was having only 15 mins, but idea wat i hav shown was not bad,
in this case on wat basis they will evaluate... ?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Jahangeer,
In the question paper its often mentioned that what you will be evaluated upon. So, I assume that each aspect has equal weight. Product Design question will carry some 5 criteria, among them will be 'Creativity' or 'Originality of the idea'. If your concept is really quite innovative, you will get full marks for this part. But, if you execute it badly, then you will lose in another criteria, say, 'Presentation' or 'sketching'. So justice will be done to your idea, but they might deduct marks for poor sketching
Lets hope for the best :)

I had a problem with part b that is I answered one of the mandatory questions on the sheet but forgot to mark it on the computer that I answered so dont know if they would consider the answer...:(

I'd like to share few other "resources :P" that I used during the exam :),

The question was - how many circles of same size can be drawn around another circle of the same size?, I had my compass with me, and it was useful in figuring out the thing (six) :D.

The next one is aadhar's logo, I had it with me as ID proof :)

There weren't any questions relating to gears, pulleys, speed and distance etc, so part A didn't take too much time :)

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Gautham ,
Haha that was terrific :)
Thanks for sharing the insight about compass and aadhar card !

I would like to know how would i prepare for the test at idc for visual communication..What kind of questions would they ask?

Ayushpratap said...

I think some questions in Part-A were abrupt and uncertain. For eg. direction of the pendulum movement - The question asked about the direction of pendulum around the pivot, the "around" word suggested that the pendulum is moving in a circle, while looking at the picture given, it looked like it is in a to-and-fro motion. Whatever, in both the cases, the pendulum is moving in both the directions i.e. from right to left and from left to right. Very confusing question.

Again in "Spot the odd one out" question, I was unable to find any differences in the given figures accept one i.e. the innermost arc was upside in one figure, but still that didnt give that particular figure an identifiable and solid distinction from other figure enough to call it out "odd".

I think there was a spelling mistake in question which asked synonym of the word "latent", the closest answer is "veiled" while the option given was "vailed" along with other options.

Part - B was demotivating-ly lengthy. Previously i did a mistake in Part-b and exhausted my all time in first question i.e. to draw apple and banana. This time I worked aout a technique to do it fast and was tormented to no end when I read the question, which required to draw at least 2 separate complex figures i.e. One Human and a Machine. I chose a person opening a refrigerator in the kitchen so I proceeded with drawing kitchen tiles, granite counter and wardrobes too. Unbelievably, I ended up using 100 minutes of my time in that question.

The story writing question was most favorite for me, but because of dying clock I had to do it superficially, again in website planning which is my profession actually, it was damn hard to explain each and every action like javascript running, image slider, javascript animations on paper, especially when you are time bound. Got it done anyhow , I think I conveyed the message of what's going on in the webpages.

The last attempt i.e. the umbrella question, I was left up with 3 minutes, with my invigilators already alarming us with their high pitched voices. I was trying to quickly think about three different, unique and praiseworthy uses of an umbrella, I was only able to write them down, with my boxes absolutely empty.

I was so frustrated and agitated after the exam that I was cursing myself to repeat the same mistake again after this whole year. It was so horrible for me I had to express so much in the paper, and i did so less. I was feeling like a handicapped person who wants to say something but can't.

I had to crack it this time as I had already decided this was my final (and second) attempt.
However, let's see what future brings us.

manoj kumar rabha said...

Hey prasanna! I hv the same query as smone above has already askd..i forgot to mark part b questions tht i answerd on the computer..wud tht be a prob???

Ayushpratap said...

+manoj kumar rabha : I think it may not be a problem as marking answer system is for the convenience of the cnadidate, i.e. candidate can easily identify in single look that which questions he has answered, which he has marked for review and which he has left without a response.

Even in Part-A , if you would have marked all questions as "marked for review" , the all would have been accepted and considered as answered. (My conclusion is based on points mentioned on welcome screen just before starting the online CEED exam.) This system actually provides a unique facility to candidate so that candidate can easily monitor his/her exam so far by a single look, and access to any question is a single click away (From question icons grid at your right window pan). Moreover, marking questions helps the system to generate a summary for you at the end, so that you can have an overall idea of what and how have you done in the exam. This fact is especially complimentary for Part-B as Part- B is attempted on the real answer sheet.

I would suggest you to relax, many people have done this mistake as i have seen this sort of questions on every group , site and blog related to CEED 2014 Exam. I am sure , IIT would not want to loose a lot of potential design scholars just because they didnt mark "Answered" on the computer for a question which was meant to be answered on real paper sheet. Well wishes.

Hi Manish,
You are right, the guy with the lowest CEED score i met, had something like AIR 65. There might be even low scorers than him, but i never met any. So, i can safely guess that the mid-value of 30 something would be a good target :)

JackOAllTrades said...

I think for the spot the odd one out question Ayushpratap if you imagine yourself with both hands outstretched like the outer circle in the question with your face facing the opening , you will notice the inner arcs were at your left arm at all points except in one case it was at the right. Thats how I spotted the odd one out. Because visually if you saw the problem it had an illusion kind of effect and was confusing. Dont know if I am right but that was my approach

JackOAllTrades said...

I would also love to hear what stories you people came up with for the club question and the solutions for the umbrella question.

Ayushpratap said...

It's my pleasure prasanna, manoj. I just love this blog, it absolutely do justice with it's name.
(I am a big fan of tea, infact I was about to write a story in CEED 2014 in that "club" question about a tea tasting club or a club of tea connoisseurs. Lols).

+whimsytummy : May be I missed something in that question, kudos for you for your apt mind.
I used the sling action of umbrella in all 3 usages, I suggested a nail gun to be made for slim ply wood by making the upper tube hollow so as to fill with nails, and by using a more strong spring and sling system, it can push nail into the ply when button is pressed, and all this from a safe distance. Don't ask details, cant explain. In my second study, I attempted to disassemble it completely and use the sling system into a billiards cue (the striker stick), so as to increase playfulness, opportunities and possibilities of the game.
In my 3rd crazy idea, I suggested that a footage of an umbrella unfolding and blooming into a fully opened umbrella can be shoot with sophisticated cameras and that footage can be used to study and develop the design by playing and observing it at lowest frame rate possible. Time warp (discovery channel) anyone ?

The story was a crazy crazy attempt in itself, I compiled the idea of humanoid-aliens in human disguise have started a club in the most culturally active area of the city so that they can have a closer look at the people of India (especially), in order to understand people's psyche in and out, and they have actually made sound relations with the people in neighborhoods and people have started coming in, although, in order to give the story a pleasant and optimistic ending, I ended it with Aliens actually liking, respecting and personally accepting Indian culture. If I had to end it in my style I would have gone ahead and introduced a war on mental plane involving psychological, intellectual and stellar tactics between Fascist sort of Aliens and Democrat sort of humans.

how have you handled these questions ?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Ayushpratap,
Those are very creative ideas indeed :)

JackOAllTrades said...

AyushPratap those are all great ideas! Very good indeed.

I used the container part of inverted umbrella as a hanging birdbath as the question asked how to use the umbrella in summer.
Then I used the umbrellas ability to flow with the wind as a windsock to measure windspeed and direction
And I used the noise that an umbrella makes when it opens when it flaps open as a startling noise to drive pesky birds away in fields , the umbrellas will be motion sensor trigerred ie by motion of birds in field.

As for the clubhouse I observed everything was normal activity in a clubhouse except there was a cat and a vase that dint seem to be hung or supported on a table so I described the club from the cats point of view as to the decor and the food and the what ppl do in the club and then the cat just ignores all the the people stuff and people noise and is trying to dream of cat stuff like rats to chase and canaries to eat when the cat notices the vase suspended in air and thinks "hmm thats suspicious and I should keep a close eye on it". That is how I have ended it making the cat look like an intelligent character with personality.

Dunno how creative that was but more than anything a CEED paper correctors job must me the most fun one... they get paid to get entertained with all these variety of ideas dont you think?

Ayushpratap said...

Thank you Prasanna, whimsytummy.

+whimsytummy: your ideas are great and with varieties. You explored different properties of umbrella, I must confess I have learned something from this. The story is a brave attempt, as observing surroundings from a human's point of view is far easier then trying the same from a cat's perspective, and that fact I think has added a new dimension in storyline.

Touchwood whimsytummy ! , I pondered same thing while in exam that CEED's examiner is one great job. Thousands of interesting ideas, thousands of interesting drawings and works. amazing amazing job really.!

Hey guys , did you know Umbrella has been used in many interesting manners around the world, some people even went as far as assassinating other people with the help of Umbrellas !.

In 1978 a Bulgarian writer was killed in London with a deadly injection delivered to him using an umbrella!!, and the master behind this design is none other then infamous Russian KGB.
You can find more interesting usages of Umbrella on a wikipedia article here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umbrella

+Prasanna, I really liked your portfolio bro, especially the indicator clip.
+whimsytummy: Your blog's awesome, however, I keep away from sweet dishes, but the recipes you have blogged, are irresistible.

Hi prasanna Sir this time I take care of marks and I completed question according to marks . I know what mistake I done last year. so I started with 50 marks question . I read the question without any hurry and found it really lengthy. They ask to design a public dustbin where people dispose their home waste, to design one box or separte dustbin box, they ask for over all view, and then exploded view, then to explain material and manufacturing process, also to explain design briefly and evaluation criteria were:-, originality of Idea, ease of use according to user, problem identification, scope of recycling and re-use of waste material and there was one more thing..I didn't remeber last criteria.
I showed over-all form in orthographic view from front side rather than perspective view I showed different parts with level, then I draw its exploded view in perspective, I draw 4 different boxes for different type of wastages with signages on each box ,taking care that they also taking account for recycling of wastages for evaluation ctiteria I also maintion this in my overall form and exploded view, but didnt maintion in my design brief, will they consider my point? or I have to show all things separately what they want in evalution criteria.they also ask in evaluation criteria about different perspective of prob. Do I have to write those prob. separately , ? I maintioned 3 different probs of current dustbin design in my design brief section. is that sufficient?
Summerising my lenhy post. Was that necessary to write according to their evaluation criteria , separately , or we show everything according to their evaluation criteria , in our desing itself during various part of answers ?
Shwetank pandey

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Shwetank ,
First of all its alright to draw an orthographic view, as long as it clearly conveys your idea. Further, you need not worry, since the more important, exploded view was in perspective! You may lose on some of the marks allocated to the brief, but since your visuals clearly are labled, then the damage will be a bit reduced. It was a good thinking that you labeled them as RECYCLE.
It would have been ideal to mark each of the things separately, but they are anyway covered in your perspective view, so i feel that there wont be much reason to reduce your marks there. The most important thing the examiner would like to see is originality of the idea and how you present it. If its easier for examiner to understand your design quickly you will get more marks. From your description it seems that you will score in both of these.
All the best :)

1. I just qualified with B score 23 (cut-off: 22) AIR 678, how bad is it?

2. Does IISc also have a cut off? Or just qualifying in CEED is sufficient to be able to apply?

3. Does the CEED score carry any weightage for further process?

1. I wont give you a hopeful picture by saying that your score is great. it does not look very hopeful as of now :(
2. IISc calls some top 300 applicants for DAT and interviews, so its hard to know the cutoffs since it depends on who all are applying
3. CEED score might be considered in interview, but that is not clearly known

Hello Ashish.
You do clear the cutoff at IITB. And you did a right thing in applying to IDC.
We dont really know if your CEED score is taken into account during the interviews, but if they do, the content in your application form and portfolio must be really good enough to catch up with the candidates who have a better ceed score.
I am sure that if you follow this, the chances will improve :)

Hey Prasanna, my score is 35/100, would I clear the cut off at IDC, IITB?

please clarify...

hi prasanna,
after going through the form I understood what you meant by the sentence, thanks btw.
now just one last query needs to be answered, is my score, 35, enough to clear the cut-off @ IDC?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Tarun,
You are eligible for IDC, but on the border. There are surely going to be candidates who have score more than 35. we dont know the cutoffs yet. The first most important thing is to ensure you get the call to DAT. That is where you need to fill the application form more careful and choose your work samples accordingly. That is what will differentiate you from the other candidates apart from CEED score. Then the next step of DAT comes in for which the preparation is slightly different.
Let me know if there are any more doubts.
Have fun :)

"Select three different examples (for discipline of design you have applied for) from India which you consider to be particularly good or bad...." in Task B, for that, do I need to give design related answers or am i free to mention the socio-economic goods and bads as well?
