I wish to know how suitable is the field of product design to someone making a shift from architecture? And how is the technical part of the working of a product dealt by architecture graduates who have been taught to focus mostly on the aesthetics during their course? I mean does choosing product design as a profession make them only half equipped to deal the subject since they lack the technical expertise that engineering graduates come with? These tools may help you in making a portfolio for MDes interview, where you need to express your ideas through 3D models

MDes focuses on conceptual design and problem solving. Following the concept, engineering is carried out to realize this concept. Therefore, there is very less overlap between R&D carried out in engineering and concept design. For example, a MDes practitioner may design exterior body of the car so that it appears attractive to the customer, then using CAD CAM tools the design engineer will design suitable die and press tools to shape the sheet metal as closely as possible to the shape suggested by the MDes practitioner.

Hope i was able to clarify your doubt :)Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. )https://www.blogger.com/profile/08159038556750720430noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-741727036147963544.post-73025692214364507152015-05-09T10:44:24.504+05:302015-05-09T10:44:24.504+05:30Hi Prasanna

Here are some pointers to your questio...Hi Gautham,
Here are some pointers to your questions:

1. You may need to study how a font is formed. There is lots of information available on web if you search for typography and typefaces

2. Can you mail it to me on the email address in my profile?

3. You may want to buy a book called "drawing Made EAsy" by Subodh Narvekar. It contains the basics of sketching. You can build up from there. Also, keep in mind, during CEED, you should focus on expressing your own ideas and sketch from memory. The drawing of objects in front of you is purely for practice in sketching

4. The questions such as "use the given form" tests the candidates ability to think creatively given a certain shape. Since no one has seen time machine (unless a visitor from future evaluates your paper :P), this idea will be too far fetched to be considered as true use of egg shaped form. Best steer away from unrealistic ideas, unless the question itself asks use of unrealistic product like "invisible paint" that appeared in one of the CEED papers!

5. Though plastics were invented later than metals, the finishing processes evolved for processing metals evolved even later than plastics! In short, would you place iPhone, made of aluminum earlier than say, Nokia 1100 just because the former is made of metal?

You can further join CEED Help group on facebook to get your answers and questions reviewd by peer and experts :)Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. )https://www.blogger.com/profile/08159038556750720430noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-741727036147963544.post-73489852510690561482014-07-11T12:32:50.663+05:302014-07-11T12:32:50.663+05:30Hi Prasanna sir and everybody else here.
