After appearing for CEED, a candidate has to pass through three 'screens', in order to get admitted to a design course. In the above image a general overview of the process is presented, and it varies a bit from school to school. The 'screens' are:
Screen 1 : CEED Score Screening The school receives a large number of applications. These are arranged in ascending order of their CEED score (and also, GATE scores for IISc and IIT-K) From this, top 300* are invited for appearing for Design Aptitude Test (DAT).
* Note : 300 is taken as an arbitrary number
Screen 2 : Design Aptitude Test Screening The top candidates may have topped CEED, but this does not necessarily indicate their inclination for the specific course, that the school is offering. Design Aptitude Test is designed for sorting the candidates based on their 'fitness' for the given course. I have presented a few tips for you to prepare for DAT here
Screen 3 : Interviews The DAT scores are again arranged based on some cut-off criteria for passing. Any candidate scoring above this cut-off is invited to appear for the interviews. This cut-off number varies each year based on the aggregate score of the candidates and the seats available.Out of the 300* students that have appeared for DAT, some 30* appear for interviews. You can present your portfolio during the interviews. Some tips on preparing for interviews can be found here and for making a portfolio here
* Note : 300 and 30 are taken as arbitrary numbers
The candidates that make it through the interview are selected for the course.
An important note : Many of the institutes, including IISc, invite the application forms even before the CEED results are out, so please keep checking the websites of the institutes you are interested in.
Best of luck :)

Thanks man .... that was pretty informative
Are there any good institutes other than IITs n IISCs which give admission on the basis of CEED score ?
I checked out IISc site right now. It says the last date for submission of applications for M.Des is 21st March. The results are coming out on 25th.
n I'm not sure of the score I'll be getting in CEED :(
What if I apply n then don't get a nice score.
Is the application fee refundable or something. :P
Do you have any of your frnds there at IISc who got admission through GATE ?
can I get a rough idea of what GATE score might get me to DAT.
GATE results will be out by 15th March so maybe I can apply on the basis of my GATE score.
Hello Ashish,
I just checked with some people at IISc. Though the cut-offs scores are confidential, the guy with least GATE score to get selected for MDes course was having a AIR of above 310.
As usual, the cut-offs vary a great deal each year. So just apply everywhere you feel like. The money is not really refundable, just consider it a fun hang out at pizza hut :P
Besides that, in the application form you just have to fill in your CEED seat number, IISc will take care of the rest! Just relax and apply :)
Best of luck
oh last date is 21st?? ie today ! thought the application procedures will begin only aftr the results are out.. :/
Hi Prasanna,
Do you know any good institutes in india for M.Des in Animation design other than IITB.
Hello Biswanil,
Apart from IDC (IIT-B), for animation, you can try for National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. Also few none premier institutes like MAEER's MIT Institute of Design (Pune), Srishti School of Design (Bangalore), The Whistling Woods International Institute for Film, Television & Media Arts (Mumbai), etc offer courses in design
Hope it helps.
Best of luck :)
@Biswanil n Prasanna - I think JJ school of arts is also pretty good for animation .... don't know much but it has big names like associated with it like Mukesh Singh etc.
and Thanks a ton Prasanna for for suggesting me to fill up my GATE as well as CEED score. I did not qualify for CEED but I am shortlisted for the DAT through my GATE score.
So I'll catch u at the IISc campus when I come for DAT.
I also made it into the 2nd pahse (studio test) of NID but unfortunately m not able to attend it because of my Semester exams.
hey thanx for ur reply............!! My main question is I m from a Textile Design background and i want to switch to animation. So how much percentage they expect me to present my portfolio in the applied discipline. Since i have a nice textile portfolio which do include some good drawing/sketches. N for the exam should I refer to some CAT sylabus............??
Hello Ashish ,
Thats a great news!! CONGRATULATIONS!!
Sorry to hear about your exams clashing with the studio test.
I also wish we'd meet but i am no longer on IISc campus. I left it a while back and i work currently for L&T in Mumbai.
Best of luck for DAT
Plz let me know the progress.
Hello Dharun,
You will find some tips on making the portfolio here
Since you already have a nice textile design portfolio, I strongly suggest showing it. Also, you may want to add a few concept design work. Like, since you are aspiring for animation, maybe a few character sketches or a short animation would be really useful.
No need to refer to the CAT syllabus. It’s not related to that extent! a few basic aptitude questions are sufficient. Even no need to prepare for that.
Let me know if you need anything more.
Best of luck for you career in animation.
Thanks Prasnna
Plz tell me what other things I should be taking with my Portfolio like Resume or other documents, certificates etc ??
Hello Ashish,
While appearing for entrance interview be sure to carry any supporting documents that may include certificates, appreciation letter and award certificates for competitions you might have participated in. Just keep in mind that you are trying to help the interview panel decide how good you at what you have applied for, so carrying your Karate Black Belt certificate is not necessary, unless the course you have applied to involves breaking bricks! (plz let me know of such courses too) Portfolio is exactly one such document, rest is what all you want to carry with you.
What about Resume ?
Hello Ashish,
You might have already filled in the application form, so resume is not really needed. You can carry it for the peace of mind. (likewise you can carry many other things for peace of mind, like coloured pencils, mini-drafter, ink-eraser, autographed photograph of Bipasha Basu, etc. :P)
hey prasanna,
i have cleard both NID and CEED first round and my CEED rank is 130. I was unable to apply for iisc bangalore because the last dates had long passed. apart from NID, i have applied to the other iits as i wish to pursue automobile design in either NID or IDC. Id like to know how exactly the other institutes (kanpur, guwahati and delhi iits) fare with respect to IDC and NID with respect to industrial design.
thank you.
Hey thanx for ur suggestions on preparing for DAT and its been a very useful blog for the CEED aspirants/qualifiers..i have few general questions like....IDC has a further shortlist criteria on basis of admission forms after the CEED score which results will out on 6th may. What is dat suppose to be...does dat mean dat not all CEED qualifiers are eligible for the DAT exam n interview at IDC. And secondly according to websites they say dat they have 50 seats for each branch but on their alumi list they have only 10 to 15 students in each branch..!!(I mean how many seats are ther exactly for each branch!!)
Hi Dharun,
I think you have interpreted correctly. Not all CEED qualifiers are eligible for DAT. This is because their score was lesser than the cut off scores required qualifying for DAT.
The number of seats have increased in recent years, that’s why the discrepancy.
Hi JO!
It’s difficult to compare the institutes. All design institutes are best in their philosophies. The best way is to look up their syllabus and try to find out whether it is in best alignment with what you want to do.
Best of luck
Hi Prasanna,
Have followed your blog. I am a BE with Elex and Tc and working with Chip Designer Qualcomm [resently . I m in industry form past 3 years. I apperared in CEED this year. What it is about GATE. I did not qualify GATE and don't look like I will be able to now. What do you think ar emy chances. I came to knowa bout Mdes in Digital Experience through CEED. Can you throw some light on it . Thanks
Charu
Hello Charu,
Master in User Interaction is sometimes referred to as Digital Experience. You can find a lot of information over this on here
hiii prasanna....
im doing btech mechanical right now,im good at cad and other stuff of professional designing....but i haveheard that having knowledze in animation and ps...iz also necessary to crack ceed and those things are also necessary to do mdes industrial design at idc.........i have ZERO knowledze in ps and im not intrested at all in animation...am i suitable for mdes industrial design?? piz temme.........
Hello Pradeep,
As far as cracking CEED goes, you can analyse papers from last year and see that knowledge of photoshop or lack of it will not affect your performance too much. I cannot comment specifically about IDC, but i know many people who didnt have knowledge of photoshop and animation prior to their admission for MDes.
Hello Prasanna,
Your blog helped me a lot during CEED-2012. I want to know that after the CEED scores get announced on March 20th, 2012, if a student is shortlisted, can he apply to multiple design desciplines in a single IIT or not? (e.g. ID and MD in IDC).
Hello Anand,
Generally the admission forms of IITs have option to apply for multiple courses. These things keep changing so its worth verifying this. Secondly, you might be asked in the interview that which is the course you are more inclined towards, hence prepare to answer this too. Also, sometimes there are different DATs (Design aptitude tests) for different courses, but again, I don’t know the scenario this year.
Best of luck.
Hey prasanna,
Here is a question again: I am currently in 8th Semester of my B.E. (CSE) and I have not given the GATE, but I have qualified through CEED. So can I apply to IISc and IIT-K for the M.Des. programmes? Do they reqquire GATE score for admission who have Bachelors Degree in Engineering?
Hello Anand,
IIT-K and IISc applicants can apply based on GATE or CEED scores. You must have a valid score in any one of these to apply. Since you have qualified through CEED, you can apply to these institutes and other IITs for MDes course :)
Best of luck
sir i have my rank 719 in ceed.....not qualified....am i eligible to fill the applications of iitdelhi or iiitdm as.....there percentile requirement is above 75 which i have...
also i saw many candidates with rank 300-400 but not qualified in ceed.are they not eligible to apply any where as they didn't qualified but satisfy the percentile demand of any institute.?
Hello Beyond Senses,
As IIIT D&M page states here They require a valid CEED score. I think it means CEED qualified candidates only can apply. Yeah sometimes, the rank itself does not guarantee if you have qualified or not. Still if you are in doubt I recommend you can get in touch with the institute and ask them if its alright to apply.
Hi Prasanna
In India what is the scope of doing Masters in product design ? What skill should I be good at to make a good career in this particular field ?
LOU
Hello Prasanna Da,
I would like to know the approx. minimum GATE score (Computer Science) that can produce some hope in getting selected for interviews in IISc Bangalore & IIT Kanpur for M.Des. Please help !
Hello Koztov,
The cut-offs for the exams vary a great deal each year, based on the number of applicants, their scores and the institute's decision about cut-offs. Hence it is difficult to predict the cut-offs, even if you knew the cut-offs of last 10 years :(
Therefore, i suggest, that you apply to institute that you wish for, regardless of your score, as long as you have qualified in GATE or CEED
hello Mr.Prasanna,
i am preaparing for CEED-13,can u pls throw sum light on how to prepare for the exam, is it required that i go to any coaching classes??
and can i apply for M.Des prog with a Valid gate score from electrical branch??
pls help me and i must say ur doin a gr8 job helping ppl kno more about M.Des ...thanks for that :)
Hello,
I have written a few tips on preparing for CEED here I dont feel its necessary to go to any classes, based on my own experience and that of many people i met.
You can apply to IISc and IIT-K MDes program with GATE score in any branch
Apart from that, if you need any more help plz feel free to comment :)
Enjoy!
hey,
Thank you very much for the info...i have started preparing for CEED-13 by practicing rough sketches and solving prev years question papers...and meanwhile i am eager to learn some softwares that would aid me in 'product designing' or 'user interface' courses, so that i get to present a good portfolio...i am already working on pencil-drawn sketches....i think digital format would be an added advantage...and i am pretty good at Adobe photoshop, any other software that you would recommend??
Hello,
Good you are sketching and practicing :)
I really don’t feel that software skills are that necessary. Similarly, digital portfolio need not hold any more advantages than one made by hand. They see your thinking and your ability to solve problems. For the institutes your software skills are not very important. If you have an awesome interface, that has no content, the interview committee will not give it any credit! Therefore, I recommend you to develop your thinking through understanding what Is considered to be good product/interface. You may read online articles. Simply google ‘most innovative products’ or ‘best interfaces’ and you will know where to look :)
thankq...
i have been searching for CEED guidance for a long tym now....really happy that i found this blog!!!it has everything tat an aspirant needs...!! you are doing an amazing job Mr.Prasanna!! Cheers!! :)
Hi, I want to know about the placement packages offered by the company, after doing product/transportation design course.
hi prassana :)
while solving the question papers , i came across one particular question in the making of the comic strip- which asks for ''draw any 3 alternate characters'', can u pls tell what does that mean....i have attached a image file of that question and mailed u....pls go through it when possible...!!!
Hello Amit,
The packages information is generally confidential and therefore geneally not published. Hence i cannot answer this question
Hello 3vik,
Will mail u the reply :)
hi prassana
i want to know the difrrence between sylabus of m des and msc engineering in iisc ,also tell me how many people give ceed every year
Hello Niranjan,
MDes focuses on design of new products and MSc focuses on research into methodologies
i really dont have any idea how many people appear for ceed each year :(
hello prasanna,
can you tell me if iit's are also giving admissions for m.des. through gate score what are my chances to get admission for same through applying ceed 2013. Please also tell me some books for ceed 2013.And also tell me by ceed score can i get admission to ME in design at any college.
Hello a_mit,
Only IIT-K and IISc consider GATE score for admission to MDes. I dont know if it will change this year or not. The cut offs for GATE also vary a lot each year and its very hard to predict. I have not come across any books for CEED and i am not aware if any college considers CEED score for ME in design.
Best luck
hi prassanna,
Thanks for the information.please tell me what is the difference between doing post graduate course in IITs & in NID, also please tell what is the procedure to take admission in NID, is it same as like IITs(i.e. through ceed score )
Hello A-mit
The major difference in courses in NID and IITs is the kind of courses they teach. You can easily compare these by going through their respective websites. NID has an entrance exam of its own and awards a post graduate diploma, while IIT awards a masters degree
Hello Mr. Prasanna I would like to ask you some queries related to things like opting for the best course both on long term & short term basis as per your experience is concerned
Hello Rickey... Pls go ahead!
hi prasanna,
can u tell me where can i get previous year's ceed quistion papers with solutions.
Hi a_mit,
I have not searched on net regarding this. Plz let me know if you find them
Thanks
Hi a_mit,
Can you Please let me know the process of applying for CEED directly for the studio and interview test ? I had already cleared my CEED exam in 2011 and my score card is valid till next year.
Hello SHANKY,
The forms of various institute will soon be out. You will have to keep a watch on the sites of the institutes you are interested in. Then you will have to fill the forms and wait for the call. You maybe called for DAT and interviews based on your score. Rest of the process is same as above.
Best of luck
helloe Prasanna,
i cudn't appear 4 my CEED exam this yr due to some resons.can u help me with some oder options available to get into M.Des programme ,if any...i juss dont want to waste dis yr...plzz it"ll b a great help
Hey Prasanna,
This is on behalf of my brother, i was just looking thru his ceed result. And i really don't know if its good or bad!! need help!
-anushri
Hi Prasanna Sir,
I have recently cleared CEED exam. I am new in this field and dont know the admission procedure.
I also want to know that whether i will have to send some portfolio sample while applying into IDC? if yes what should i do for this as i have not prepared portfolio.
(I have got air 38 and interested in visual communication)
hello prasanna jii,
i have an AIR of 400, is that a good rank for getting admission in IITs ?,
though i,m not qualified in the exam.
hello anushri pandey joshi ,
Sure would like to help your brother. How much did he score?
Hello Riken,
First you have to fill the form. Then you will receive DAT and an interview call. You don’t have to show your portfolio any time before the interview and of course, don’t have to mail it either.
There are tips on how to make a graphic design portfolio in this blog. You can go through them
Hello Jinesh,
If you have an AIR 400 score, i feel you have qualified. Dont judge your score now, you should apply to all the IITs you are eligible for, you might receive a call.
there seem to be two parts to the exam... he has 75.5 for part A and 44 for part B.... his AIR is 437... however i am guessing that like all other design institutes there has to be a minimum qualifying marks for each part.. if so is 44 on part B bad!!??
hello anushri pandey joshi ,
You are right. There is a qualifying score for every institute, but it varies lot each year. Therefore, i recommend that instead of judging the score to be good or bad yourself, leave it to institutes to decide. I feel, he should try his luck, and hence apply for all the institutes that he is eligible for. There are chances, he might make it!!
Best of luck :)
Thanks Prasanna, you've been a great help... just one last question!! :D .. When you say eligibility you are referring to academic qualifications??..
Hi,
I am sorry :(
I am sure he must be eligible for all institutes since he cleared the CEED. I wanted to say that he can apply to the institutes he is interested in and find out the eligibility when they declare the cut-offs.
Feel free to ask any more questions you might have :)
wow!!! this probably the most complicated admission process i have ever seen... thanks a ton prasanna... so i will get back to bothering you once the cut offs are out... tc till then...
Hi Prasanna
I appeared for CEED 2013 exam and I got 62.5 whereas the qualifying cut off is 64. Lost by 1.5 marks. Can I get an admission in any other Design school in India? I did not appear for GATE. Can you suggest me a solution?
Ganesh Iyer
I appeared for ceed 2013 and my all india rank is 128.
i hear the seats are few and i have very little chance. Can you clear me about the no. of seats??
and also what are my chances for getting into it??
Hello Palash,
There are about 200 MDes seats all over India
I feel that, instead of judging your own score, you should leave it to IIT people.
You have qualified the CEED, now just apply. There are chances that you might get through, or you may not, but unless you apply, there are 100 percent chances you wont! So just apply :)
Thank You sir!
I also want to know what is basic difference between Interaction design and Visual Communication? I am confused between these two. (I am fresher in this field)
Hello Riken.
In visual communication you design graphics that the user can only see, while in interaction design, you design graphics which the user can not only see, but also manipulate. There is some overlap. For example, the icon on your PC desktop is a graphic (designed by graphic designer) that you can double click, delete, rename, copy, etc (designed by interaction designer)
Hope i could communicate the difference
Thank You sir!
Now the difference is pretty clear to me.
Dear sir,
Can please mention link related to graphic design portfolio? i have tried but didnt get it in blog.
Thank you!
Hi,
Actually there is no direct link to graphic design portfolio. but the content is similar to one you might make for Animation design portfolio
hello prasanna sir,
I have got 31 marks in part B of CEED this year, and qualifying marks are 50 for general category. My AIR is 1052. Do you think I should apply for admission because it is written there on my score card that i will be eligible only if ii have a score above 50.
Hello Dhanshree,
Sorry to tell you this, but I dont think your application will be accepted
You read it correctly. You are not eligible to apply :(
Are you appearing for NID?
hello sir i have got 33 marks in part B of CEED this year, and qualifying marks are 25 for ST category. My AIR is 965.i hear the seats are few and i have very little chance. Can I get an admission in any other IITs?
Hi Ketan.
This is true , that your score is too low for IDC, but you can try for other IITs and let them decide if its that low
No sir I am not appearing for NID but I am appearing for GATE. Can you please tell me what will be the process for admission through GATE score.
And also please tell me if I can apply in some other colleges which accept CEED score for M.Des.
Hi Dhanshree,
Only IITs consider CEED score
and procedure for admission through GATE is the same as that for CEED
hey Prasanna,
Can you please tell what all orginal certficates are asked at the time of interview ?
Hi Naveen,
I am not aware about the matter, but as long as i remember, i was not asked for the original certificates. i feel you should contact the IITB office on what documents to carry
Hello Priybrat.
You cannot apply for IIT's or IIITDM. There are some people who have applied despite of not being qualified in CEED. They often get rejection after they fill the form. Also, i feel that you can apply to other places like Srishti design school, MIT, etc. And there are so many ways of persuing career in design without having MDes degree!
Best of luck
Hello Prasanna Sir,
As we discussed earlier that we can apply for M.Des in IIT with GATE score too. I have got 455 GATE score in IN with 752 AIR, so should I apply for M.Des too along with M.Tech? Is there any possibility to get M.Des at this score?
Hi Prasanna,
I was applying online at IITD website,
At one point I was stuck,
At The option of " Department ", I filled "Industial Design","Mechanical","Mechanical Design", Etc., But it wasn't taking it.
Please help me about the same.
Thanks.
Hello Dhanshree ,
Only IITK and IISc accept GATE score for MDes admissions
I do not know cut offs for GATE so cant tell you. I feel you should apply anyway
Best of luck
Hello ketan,
I am not aware about this problem, but maybe IITD administration might help you with that. My guess is that, you can only apply to a limited number of departments
Hope it gets solved soon :)
i have passed part a and got part b didnt qualify part b and got allindia 558 rank can i apply for colleges based on ceed rank?
I am sorry Mridhul , but you have not cleared the CEED if you have not cleared Part B, so are not eligible to apply :(
hello Prasanna Sir,
Please tell me something about the design portfolio.
Hello Dhanshree,
A design portfolio is a document that contains samples of your best work using which you can convince the faculty interviewing you about your skills and potential as a designer. For typical portfolios you can refer to success stories given on the right side of this page
Dear Prasanna Sir,
Please tell me that what kind of questions do they ask in the test before interview at IITs. And what is a studio test.
Hello Dhanshree,
You can refer to this post for reply to your question. Feel free to ask if you have any other doubt
