Dear friends,
One of the regular reader of this blog and our friend Surbhi Tak made it successfully to NID - Information and Interface design (IID). Many congratulations to her.
I requested her to share her experience and this is what she has to say about it… almost in poetic way!
Who am I? A successful NID student
Who was I? ( till 4 days back) A NID aspirant
I'm Surbhi Tak & this year I made it successfully to NID.
I am writing something about my journey from a NID aspirant to NID student.
I am a B.Tech Textile Technology & I opted to go for design studies. You might think it as a sudden decision but it was not, Intrinsically I have always wanted to be a student of design. I like creating patterns, adding features to already existing things around me and so on.
It took me a while to reach here & I start my journey, nevertheless it is a journey worth going through because I learnt a lot about designs as well as about myself through the hard work and time I put in.
In a simple language, NID tests 3 things:-
1. Written exam ( Main exam)
2. Practical test ( Studio test)
3. Oral test ( Interview)
Feel free to contact me to know more about NID examination.
I'm thankful to my family for continued support, but I specially thank Prasanna for continuously motivating me & not losing hope in me.

Surbhi's portfollio
For reference she has permitted to publish few of the works she presented during the interview.
Sample 1 : This is Surbhi’s work showing her skills in understanding lighting and its effects. It essentially shows the how a simple surface appears under different illumination conditions. This work was done by her in Autodesk 3ds Max.
Sample 2 : This is a storyboard created by Surbhi. Observe how well she communicates the concept of an educational toy. This toy is designed to feel students more interested in subject of history. She has chosen a national historical figure of Rani Laxmibai for this illustration.
Sample 3 : In this sample of her portfolio, Surbhi is demonstrating her skills over several soft mediums like plasticine (modeling clay), paper and cardboard. Such skills helped her in cracking the NID studio test with ease and also will help her during her course.
Sample 4 : Surbhi uses plasticine (modeling clay) to communicate the concept of a night lamp. This model clearly indicates her dexterity in utilizing the properties of the modeling material to convey a complicated form in a clear manner
Sample 5 : In this sample Surbhi has made a rose using modeling clay.
Sample 6 : Surbhi made this concept rendering of a wine glass using her Adobe Photoshop skills . She uses her keen skills in understanding light and shade to give her work an artistic effect, while successfully communicating the form.
Surbhi Tak is joining PGDP in Information & Interface design ( NID, Bangalore). She has done her B.Tech in Textile Technology. She is an expert user of Adobe photoshop, Adobe illustrator, 3ds max, google sketch up and Monkey jam. Besides that she excels at modeling using soft medium (modeling clay, paper, cardboard, etc) In her free time she pursues her hobbies in chess, carom, video games and cycling.
You can get in touch with her by mailing her at tak.sur@gmail.com

Hello Vinod,
Replying on behalf of Surbhi: The materials used for making the models is written below each picture. The 3D forms you see are all made by hand and are realistic, except for ones mentioned to be made in 3Ds Max
but sir when we will go for interviw then we will take only photo of these realistic.?...not require to bring original model....? thanku
Hello Vinod,
She had taken the originals to the interview.
ok...thanku sir...can we show only sketching in intervw..... is it sufficient? and from where i can get the previous ceed solved paper....
Yes, you can show only sketches during interviews. And I am not aware where you might get solved papers from

Hello Sir,
I'm currently pursuing my BE in Information technology (VTU) at Bangalore, I will be graduating in June '13. I wish to write the entrance exam for NID and hopefully join the PGPD course in IID next year (2013). What is the scope for graduates with no work experience in this course? Is it a bad idea to attempt without work experience?
I have an aggregate of 70% with no fails or arrears. Design has always fascinated me. I am reasonably good at sketching, and have always had a vivid sense of imagination and creativity. What would you suggest?
- Nikhil.
Also, which other design schools should I have a look at? I would prefer an IT-related design post graduate course. I'm open to Product design too!
Thanks.
Hello Nikhil,
I feel that you wont have any problem in selection. Experience is preferred by companies who come for campus placement. it gives you an additional edge over the people who dont have much experience. I am saying this from my own placement experience also.
Which other design courses you can look for? There is a very good resource for this. you can check out this link
Hi Sir.
I am a B.Tech graduate (Comp. Sc. and Engg.) with huge interest in UI design. Right now I am also preparing for GATE 2013. Is it necessary for me to know tools like Autodesk 3Ds Max etc. to apply for this programme at NID ?
And could you please simply sugggest what all topics do I need to study for the NID entrance examination ?
Hi Kunal,
Its absolutely not needed to know any tools like you have mentioned. I recommend that when you prepare the portfolio for NID, include as many sketches of GUI as needed. You can make them easily on simple software like PowerPoint or even paper cutouts it you want to.
For preparation of NID studio test I recommend you to make a large number of models of different materials like clay, thermocol, paper and cardboard. Understand how these materials behave and then you can actually use them in your studio test.
Hello mam,
I am giving the exam of nid and the aptitude test is on 20th jan 2013,, so i don;t have any idea that
how to study and what to study? to crack it...plzzz mam hepl by replying this..!
Hello C,
As Surbhi has mentioned above, she had practiced a lot for studio test and written exam. The written exam are observed to contain questions that are in similar nature to CEED, as well as the questions that test your knowledge of design and materials. It is recommended that you take some time to find out what all materials everyday objects use. Like, a clothes iron will have a polypropylene body, a nichrome coil inside wrapped around a mica core.
In studio test, you can prepare by making simple models out of cardboard, paper, modelling clay and wire.
Best of luck:)
but for the written test which books i should refer
to prepare from it. If i will crack aptitude test and after that i will take your help for preparation of studio test,.....thanxxx prasanna sir,
Hello C,
Unfortunately there are no written books i know of for this preparation.
i am sure studio test is easy if you learn to use standard modeling materials
best luck :)
thanxx for the help prasanna sir,...your bolg is awesome n sir, u have done great job by this blog it helps students like me....!! i hope i could clear the written test and ask ur help for studio test,,,,thanxxx again sir,,
Thanks C :)
one more question for u sir,, which is the best brand for pencil colour ?? and which types of paper size i should use A3, A4,or any other for sketching.....
Hello C,
There is no 'best' brand of pencils in my opinion. I used the following during CEED and still prefer to use the following:
- For regular work: Camlin Hi-dark pencil and Faber-Castell 0.7 mm mechanical pencil (from my engineering days :P)
- For color work: Faber-Castel pencil pack of 12 colors
- I also keep a black Pic pen, with fiber tip handy
For sketching i recommend you to use A4 paper. This is because CEED paper is of A4 size, and you will get a good judgement of size of sketches this way.
Best luck
thanxx prasanna sir,.....it will me a lot
hello sir,I just appeared for CEED and missed it by 4 marks, now i am appearing for NID this cominh Jan. , my human figure sketching is not good, But doing good in transport and product. Also i practice everyday. Can you share me some more of your tips.
Hi Jayesh
Feeling bad hearing about your CEED result
Hope you have better luck in NID
Here are some tips to help you
hi prasanna, how to prepare for NId studio test for interface design? Can they ask material handling for interface and new media? plz help..
Hello Shivani,
Its not so difficult to prepare for studio test of NID interface design. As Surbhi has already pointed out that she practiced using cardboard, paper and modeling clay for the studio test. In typical studio test they ask you to make an interface or an interactive device using these mediums. So just practice them.Make a small model of microwave oven along with interface, an interactive toy, model of a cell phone and all with these materials for practice :)
I am not aware about new media design :(
Hello Sir,
I am going to appear for studio test for new media design.I have just read this page for studio test. It will surely help me.
Sir let me know if u have idea about NMD studio test!
Thank you
Hello Sir,
I have completed my Btech and now i am looking for doing PGDPD and CEED both,I am interested in doing PGDPD New Media Design/Design for digital Experience.I wanted to know that wat all i need to do for making an attractive portfolio.I am not good at modelling , The last time i made a model was in Craft subject in my Primary School. Can you suggest me some other ideas so that i can make a good portfolio to crack the NID studio Test..???
Thanks.
Hi Aditya,
You need to practice simple modelling using paper, wire, clay, etc. This is needed to clear the Studio test held at NID. I recommend you to buy some construction paper, an Aluminum wire, a block of modelling clay and start making simple products like pen-stand, lamp holder, newspaper rack, etc.
Side by side, you can make a nice portfolio using sketches and then making models of the sketches that you find are best.
This way you will have a great portfolio as well as practice for Studio Test :)
Hello Sir,
I am doing my last year in Computer Engineering and will be appearing for NID Entrance exam this year for Interface Design. I have no idea what to do and from where to start. Will you please suggest me how should I prepare for the entrance exam and which books should I refer??
Hello Surbhi and Prasanna,
Please let me know if you can guide me on tips to crack strategic design management entrance what is asked in studio test or interview and what kind of portolio is required. I have searched everything but in vain.
Hi Nithin,
By design management, do you mean the course at NID or at MIT Pune?
I can help you with NID portfolio :)
Hi Prasanna,
Yes regarding NID only. Please also let me know regarding studio test for the same.
I have improved my sketching from novice after reading your blog.
Success stories from this field will also be great to learn.
Hi Nitin,
I can review your portfolio
Though I wont be able to help you with studio test for design management :(
I wanna know about all the things to get into NID as m a science student.. Studying in 12th. And i wish to enter NID . I have my work experience classes in school and i chose textile designing.. I have my A3 Sketchbook.. With all the different types of stitching i learnt + models of dress designing.
Hello harshita,
I am sorry, but i cant help you with NID entrance. I can only review and help you with the portfolio preparation and review
Though you can have better luck asking the NID 2014 group on Facebook :)
Hello Sir.
I am keen to appear for the NID Entrance Exam. I have very little experience in sketching and art & crafts, so I am a bit nervous about building up my Portfolio. I don't even have one till now and I have very little time.
Firstly, is it necessary to have a Portfolio? And secondly, if yes, then any advice?
Thank you.
Hi S,
Portfolio is very important while appearing for interview at NID or IIT. It shows how good you are at designing and whether you are deserving candidate or not! I have put some of my thoughts here
Hi Prasanna,
Would you be able to suggest any of the books to get prepared for NID entrance PGDPD?
Thanks in advance.
Prassana I want to go for transportation design I have competed my B.tech in Production and have good knowledge of Catia V5 and Autocad and have designed lots of 3d models. What is portfolio can u explain me in detail????I have passed intermediate grade examination and have lots of drawing certificates (State level) can they be beneficial for my admissions? and as i was reading u r answers i got to know about modelling can i prepare a cardboard model of project which i undertook during my B.tech??? I have good technichal knowledge of automobile but I am some what weak in sketching???Further what material should i carry for the written examinations like Crayons color pencils etc??? I explored some recent question papers and i came accross the wuestion which asked to use the color papers and make some models what was that and how to approach such questions????
Hi Patrick,
For having an idea what a design portfolio, just go though the success stories. You will know what they are looking for. Drawing certificates and CAD models wont help you much unless you make something creative in your portfolio. For example, you can try making a cardboard model of your BE project, if it is something innovative. Otherwise, you can design a car in CATIA, then render it in some software and make a cardboard model of the same. It might show that you are not only good at designing, but also at modelling. For the written exam, as far as possible use dry media like color pencils, crayons and sketch pens. Practice well with these.
For the studio test questions, its kind of hard to tell you the exact approach, because it depends on the time of the test. Still, you can improve your chances of making something creative, if you practice making paper models. Also practice with modelling clay and aluminium wire as they are also supplied sometimes.
You can email me your queries, i can reply in more detail
Best of luck :)
hi prasanna,,,i am jewel...i am a nid and ceed aspirant.....where can i find nid previous year question papers pg in transport and auto design
Hi Jewel,
NID did not publish their papers like IITB did. Though there are unofficial places like scribd.com where you might get mock ones. Still in my observation, CEED prep works enough fir NID as well.
All the best :)
hi ,
i am aspirant for nid and ceed and i have no idea in which sequence i should start preparing for exams.. i am practicing sketching .. but i don know which other fields i should prepare for ? i live in bangalore ,i asked in many book stores none of them have books on nid/ceed can you help me with study material and also which books and site i should refer to ?
Hi Punya,
Even i am looking for dedicated books on CEED, but i didnt find any. But you can prepare basics of sketching from 'Drawing made easy' by Subodh Narvekar
All you have to do is solve old CEED papers and get it reviewed. Either, you can mail me your solutions or you can post it on 'CEED Help' group on Facebook. This way, you will be able to practice for CEED.
In general, you have two minutes per marks, so you should also time yourself accordingly
Hope this helps you
All the best
HEY THANKS PRASANNA!!!UR BLOG IS OF EXTREME HELP...KUDOS!!!
Hi Sir,
Im deepu ...i have been working in a software company since one n half year...i have completed my btech in civil engineering.. Being a civil engineer and as i have a keen interest in drawing, sketchin and designing..i want to give NID exam dis year..but im confused about which course/stream to take and the career opportunities regarding the same..im interested in furniture and interior designing but i dont knw whether it would earn me a good job....what are the job opportunities i would have if i complete my post graduation in design...
I would be really obliged to hear from you soon....thank you in advance...
Hello Deepu,
You should first go and check out NID site to figure out which courses they offer. If you have already zeroed down upon furniture and interior design, then you should pursue that. NID has some of the best faculties and best placements in india. And even better thing about NID is that, they train you to start your own venture! So after your PG from NID, you can choose to have your own buisness! and if you are really good in this field, i am sure you will really enjoy doing it :)
All the best!
Im not yet decided with the stream sir...if you would lyk to suggest which stream would you suggest....and alsoo even after completing my pg...inorder to stat on my own i need to get financially stabilized right and it also needs a lot of experience...!!
Well I want do itt...but im a bit scared...!!! And thats the only reason i asked you about job opportunities and all in my previous post...
Hello Deepu,
I feel that right now you should try to explore your areas of interests. Its good to know a little bit about every branch and then choose which you like the best. Therefore, you can try going through various portfolios available online and also look through NID website. Then you can choose what specialization you would like to choose.
You are correct about the experience needed to start your own firm. There is nothing to worry about because NID has ample of placement opportunities.
All the best :)
Thank you so much sir...😊😊

Hi,
I have done MA which has not touched any design study. I want to apply for M.Des (Graphic Design or Photography Design). I have no experience in that field. Nor do I know how to use Photoshop. I am just interested in learning. How can I prepare for the exam?
Hi Topsy,
If you plan to enroll for MDes degree, you will first need to clear CEED for IITs or NID entrance exam for NID. Then, once you clear the test, the next thing you do is build a portfolio for interviews. For graphic design course, you will need to execute sample works in logos, posters, symbols, etc. Similarly for photography course, you will need to take photographs using different techniques. Please feel free to write to me for any further doubts that you might have :)
Hello
I have passed the written test of NID 2016. I have opted for Graphic design in Mdes. I want to know if there is any problem if i show my portfolio on laptop in the form power point presentation?
