Uses of egg-shaped form

The following post has been inspired from a question asked by sanjana

The question no. 4 from CEED 2008 paper goes like this :

“Visualize TEN different products that which use shape of the egg given below

You can use shape of the egg as a whole or a part of it, in combination with other shapes.

A garbage bin is shown below as an example

You will be evaluated by variety of ideas and the usefulness of the proposed products”

Solution :

Since the ‘form’ is specified and the ‘function’ needs to be derived, we have to list the attributes of the specified form.Hence we use attribute method. You can read more about the attribute method here

Attributes of the egg-shape :
  •           It has neither corners nor edges
  •           It is a continuous surface
  •           When placed on a flat surface it will tend to roll off
  •           Anything placed on top of this surface will roll off unpredictably
  •           It has only one axis of symmetry
  •           When cut in half, along its non-symmetry plane, we have two ‘bowl’ like shapes
  •           When cut, along its non-symmetry plane, the section is always an circle

Ideas
Using the attribute “It has neither corners nor edges”
  •           A nice chair formed with inner 1/4th of the egg-shape
  •           A redesigned funnel, for pouring liquids so no corners on inside
  •           Using half of the egg, we can make a cup that has no corners on inside so easy to clean
  •           A trash bin which will collect trash at bottom no matter how you put it
Using the attribute of “Anything placed on top of this surface will roll off unpredictably”
  •           An innovative design for umbrella from which the water droplets will roll off
  •           A form of dice which will decide the numbers randomly where the ball slides off to
  •           A fun egg-shaped ball to play unpredictable games
Using the attribute of  “When cut in half, along its non-symmetry plane, the section is always an circle”
  •           An innovative method of measuring diameter of a hole using egg shape
  •           An alternative to conical stoppers on the bottles
  •           An redesign of circles template
Other ideas that come by combining more than one attributes are :
  •           A random spinning top
  •           A self balancing pen stand that rests on the wide bottom and is made heavier at base
  •           A egg-shaped jigsaw puzzle to reassemble the egg

Some of the ideas appear more innovative than other. Since the evaluation is based on usefulness of the proposed products, you can select any of TEN most useful product ideas and sketch them.

Have fun adding more to the list above through your comments :)

sir,
i cant believe you just explained it all so well.truly saying after reading your answer i got the way how i need to look at each question and attempt it in a particular manner. thanx a ton . for your help sir.! :)

Thing which is clear 4rm ur explination is that in these type of questions the approach shld b productive 4rm company's [pint of view.
thanks sir.

Hello Suneesh,
Can you elaborate a bit more on the comment you made? I did not get what you mean by "...from company's point of view". Thanks.

Hey prassana i want 2 kno 1 thing is dat in such questions like make things 4m cube, cylinder, wire etc. Can we use ruler or we have 2 to do free hand... Do we have 2 color or sketch them... Or just a wire frame is enough....????

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Charge,
I suggest not to draw any geometric instruments and not to use colors unless you cannot avoid using them. you can render the sketches using simple HB pencil.

Hey.... Can u plz tell me dat how much 'good attempt' is needed to crack ceed comfortably...????? Becoz the problem is dat 3 hrs time is very less...

i need ans of the question asked in previous years...n tht wz what modification you are going to do whn you are said to design scissor for a blind person..??

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

hello Ajazz
Maybe you can consider the shortcoming a blind person might face in using regular scissors
1. you can make the tips rounded so it does not hurt him if he picks it wrong way
2. you can design the them such that its obvious on where they are kept, without really seeing them
etc

awesome thoughts sir, i have related ques.form papers only :one of the ques was to make sculpture and another was to make a product for a person leaving design company..both the ques were given with 3d figures like sphere cylinder cube cone flexible-wire so on..so how to think accordingly and play with 3d objects

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Chetan,
I did not understand your question completely, but if you mean to ask how to design an object as a combination of given basic shapes/objects then here is a thought : Attribute method can be used for “draw 5 objects using the given shapes”. First critically evaluate the attributes of the objects given and their combinations. Like, two hemisphere can form a sphere or a wire can assume any shape. Then start by thinking of usefulness of this form. For example, the sphere can form a globe and wires form the support, thus you have a model of earth. And so on ...

sir the ques was;
a person is leaving design company, and we are required to build a toy for him. we are provided with some 3d obj like cylinder, cube, flexible wire, etc etc...also we are free to scale these 3d obj...
My doubt is what are we expected to build for such a person..i hope you get my ques..thanks

Apart from what is posted in my reply to the last question :

"First critically evaluate the attributes of the objects given and their combinations. Like, two hemisphere can form a sphere or a wire can assume any shape. Then start by thinking of usefulness of this form. For example, the sphere can form a globe and wires form the support, thus you have a model of earth. And so on ..."

You will need to find out what the person likes and then try to come up with a form using these basic shapes on what product to design

hi Prasanna,

Wonderful work. thanks a lot for the information. For the above question from CEED 2008, I have a few more items to add. let me know if these ideas are good.
uses of egg shaped form :

1) an egg shaped computer mouse
2) a flower vase, a pen stand, incense stick holder(with small holes punched in after cutting the shape into half and the object will rest of the cut edge)
3)decorative lamp (egg shape dome made out of glass and a bulb inside)
4)egg shaped kitchen ware like soup bowls
5) a clock !
6)dancing doll (the egg shape can be used as the doll's stomach and may be support the doll with something to secure it )

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Rekha,
These ideas are really brilliant!
Plus the best part is actually you have thought about it in detail. For example, instead of just saying decorative lamp, you have thought how to arrange it.
Your idea of using egg shaped form as mouse is specially very good. How did you come up with these?
Did you use attribute method?

what about WINE GLASS , SHUTTLE COCK base, BULB shape , rolling doll(air inflated), innovative screw driver handle or WATER TAB handle.

Few more ideas:
1.salt and pepper dispenser(cut the egg in half and use one half for salt and the other for pepper)
2.speaker
3.mosquito repellant machine
4.fancy lampshade(cut one-fourth along non symetric axis)
5.hanging chair
6.baby cradle
7.planting saplings
8.laundry basket
9.barrel for storage
10.geyser in bathroom
11.talcum dispenser
12.stool for sitting
13.candes
14.folding goggles case(example swimming goggles)
15.piggy bank(humpty dumpty shape :D)
16.latest PHILIPS AIR FRYER design
17.charger deck
18.makeup kit
19.clock

Haha, nice uses :D

Haha, thanks ;)
What do you suggest for those questions involving creating interesting products from given set of cuboid, sphere, comes, discs and wires????

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hey,
To solve such problems with given elements, the best approach is to first think about a generic shape, such as say, spaceship and then think about how will you use the given shapes to build it

Unknown said...

i just had one small doubt.. can we assume those cubes, sphere etc. to be hollow?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Aditi ,
You can assume the shapes to be hollow, porous, made of any material, as long as a sphere is identified as a sphere :)
