CEED Selection Process

This post is a reply to comment by Tarun and also as a followup of comment from Indrajeet

Graphical overview of CEED Selection Process.

After appearing for CEED, a candidate has to pass through three 'screens', in order to get admitted to a design course. In the above image a general overview of the process is presented, and it varies a bit from school to school. The 'screens' are:

Screen 1 : CEED Score Screening The school receives a large number of applications. These are arranged in ascending order of their CEED score (and also, GATE scores for IISc and IIT-K) From this, top 300* are invited for appearing for Design Aptitude Test (DAT).
* Note : 300 is taken as an arbitrary number

Screen 2 : Design Aptitude Test Screening  The top candidates may have topped CEED, but this does not necessarily indicate their inclination for the specific course, that the school is offering. Design Aptitude Test is designed for sorting the candidates based on their 'fitness' for the given course. I have presented a few tips for you to prepare for DAT here

Screen 3 : Interviews The DAT scores are again arranged based on some cut-off criteria for passing. Any candidate scoring above this cut-off is invited to appear for the interviews. This cut-off number varies each year based on the aggregate score of the candidates and the seats available.Out of the 300* students that have appeared for DAT, some 30* appear for interviews. You can present your portfolio during the interviews. Some tips on preparing for interviews can be found here and for making a portfolio here
* Note : 300 and 30 are taken as arbitrary numbers

The candidates that make it through the interview are selected for the course.

An important note : Many of the institutes, including IISc, invite the application forms even before the CEED results are out, so please keep checking the websites of the institutes you are interested in.

Best of luck :)

I checked out IISc site right now. It says the last date for submission of applications for M.Des is 21st March. The results are coming out on 25th.
n I'm not sure of the score I'll be getting in CEED :(
What if I apply n then don't get a nice score.
Is the application fee refundable or something. :P

Do you have any of your frnds there at IISc who got admission through GATE ?
can I get a rough idea of what GATE score might get me to DAT.
GATE results will be out by 15th March so maybe I can apply on the basis of my GATE score.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Ashish,
I just checked with some people at IISc. Though the cut-offs scores are confidential, the guy with least GATE score to get selected for MDes course was having a AIR of above 310.

As usual, the cut-offs vary a great deal each year. So just apply everywhere you feel like. The money is not really refundable, just consider it a fun hang out at pizza hut :P

Besides that, in the application form you just have to fill in your CEED seat number, IISc will take care of the rest! Just relax and apply :)

Best of luck

Hi Prasanna,
Do you know any good institutes in india for M.Des in Animation design other than IITB.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Biswanil,

Apart from IDC (IIT-B), for animation, you can try for National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. Also few none premier institutes like MAEER's MIT Institute of Design (Pune), Srishti School of Design (Bangalore), The Whistling Woods International Institute for Film, Television & Media Arts (Mumbai), etc offer courses in design

Hope it helps.

Best of luck :)

Ashish Khare said...

@Biswanil n Prasanna - I think JJ school of arts is also pretty good for animation .... don't know much but it has big names like associated with it like Mukesh Singh etc.

Ashish Khare said...

and Thanks a ton Prasanna for for suggesting me to fill up my GATE as well as CEED score. I did not qualify for CEED but I am shortlisted for the DAT through my GATE score.

So I'll catch u at the IISc campus when I come for DAT.

I also made it into the 2nd pahse (studio test) of NID but unfortunately m not able to attend it because of my Semester exams.

Unknown said...

hey thanx for ur reply............!! My main question is I m from a Textile Design background and i want to switch to animation. So how much percentage they expect me to present my portfolio in the applied discipline. Since i have a nice textile portfolio which do include some good drawing/sketches. N for the exam should I refer to some CAT sylabus............??

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Ashish ,

Thats a great news!! CONGRATULATIONS!!

Sorry to hear about your exams clashing with the studio test.

I also wish we'd meet but i am no longer on IISc campus. I left it a while back and i work currently for L&T in Mumbai.

Best of luck for DAT

Plz let me know the progress.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Dharun,

You will find some tips on making the portfolio here

Since you already have a nice textile design portfolio, I strongly suggest showing it. Also, you may want to add a few concept design work. Like, since you are aspiring for animation, maybe a few character sketches or a short animation would be really useful.

No need to refer to the CAT syllabus. It’s not related to that extent! a few basic aptitude questions are sufficient. Even no need to prepare for that.

Let me know if you need anything more.

Best of luck for you career in animation.

Ashish Khare said...

Thanks Prasnna

Plz tell me what other things I should be taking with my Portfolio like Resume or other documents, certificates etc ??

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Ashish,

While appearing for entrance interview be sure to carry any supporting documents that may include certificates, appreciation letter and award certificates for competitions you might have participated in. Just keep in mind that you are trying to help the interview panel decide how good you at what you have applied for, so carrying your Karate Black Belt certificate is not necessary, unless the course you have applied to involves breaking bricks! (plz let me know of such courses too) Portfolio is exactly one such document, rest is what all you want to carry with you.

Ashish Khare said...

What about Resume ?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Ashish,
You might have already filled in the application form, so resume is not really needed. You can carry it for the peace of mind. (likewise you can carry many other things for peace of mind, like coloured pencils, mini-drafter, ink-eraser, autographed photograph of Bipasha Basu, etc. :P)

Id like to know how exactly the other institutes (kanpur, guwahati and delhi iits) fare with respect to IDC and NID with respect to industrial design.

Hey thanx for ur suggestions on preparing for DAT and its been a very useful blog for the CEED aspirants/qualifiers..i have few general questions like....IDC has a further shortlist criteria on basis of admission forms after the CEED score which results will out on 6th may. What is dat suppose to be...does dat mean dat not all CEED qualifiers are eligible for the DAT exam n interview at IDC. And secondly according to websites they say dat they have 50 seats for each branch but on their alumi list they have only 10 to 15 students in each branch..!!(I mean how many seats are ther exactly for each branch!!)

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Dharun,
I think you have interpreted correctly. Not all CEED qualifiers are eligible for DAT. This is because their score was lesser than the cut off scores required qualifying for DAT.

The number of seats have increased in recent years, that’s why the discrepancy.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi JO!

It’s difficult to compare the institutes. All design institutes are best in their philosophies. The best way is to look up their syllabus and try to find out whether it is in best alignment with what you want to do.

Best of luck

Hello Pradeep,
As far as cracking CEED goes, you can analyse papers from last year and see that knowledge of photoshop or lack of it will not affect your performance too much. I cannot comment specifically about IDC, but i know many people who didnt have knowledge of photoshop and animation prior to their admission for MDes.

Anand Sangani said...

Hello Prasanna,

Your blog helped me a lot during CEED-2012. I want to know that after the CEED scores get announced on March 20th, 2012, if a student is shortlisted, can he apply to multiple design desciplines in a single IIT or not? (e.g. ID and MD in IDC).

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Anand,
Generally the admission forms of IITs have option to apply for multiple courses. These things keep changing so its worth verifying this. Secondly, you might be asked in the interview that which is the course you are more inclined towards, hence prepare to answer this too. Also, sometimes there are different DATs (Design aptitude tests) for different courses, but again, I don’t know the scenario this year.
Best of luck.

Hey prasanna,

Here is a question again: I am currently in 8th Semester of my B.E. (CSE) and I have not given the GATE, but I have qualified through CEED. So can I apply to IISc and IIT-K for the M.Des. programmes? Do they reqquire GATE score for admission who have Bachelors Degree in Engineering?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Anand,
IIT-K and IISc applicants can apply based on GATE or CEED scores. You must have a valid score in any one of these to apply. Since you have qualified through CEED, you can apply to these institutes and other IITs for MDes course :)
Best of luck

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Beyond Senses,
As IIIT D&M page states here They require a valid CEED score. I think it means CEED qualified candidates only can apply. Yeah sometimes, the rank itself does not guarantee if you have qualified or not. Still if you are in doubt I recommend you can get in touch with the institute and ask them if its alright to apply.

Hello Prasanna Da,

I would like to know the approx. minimum GATE score (Computer Science) that can produce some hope in getting selected for interviews in IISc Bangalore & IIT Kanpur for M.Des. Please help !

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Koztov,
The cut-offs for the exams vary a great deal each year, based on the number of applicants, their scores and the institute's decision about cut-offs. Hence it is difficult to predict the cut-offs, even if you knew the cut-offs of last 10 years :(
Therefore, i suggest, that you apply to institute that you wish for, regardless of your score, as long as you have qualified in GATE or CEED

TRIVIKRAM said...

hey,
Thank you very much for the info...i have started preparing for CEED-13 by practicing rough sketches and solving prev years question papers...and meanwhile i am eager to learn some softwares that would aid me in 'product designing' or 'user interface' courses, so that i get to present a good portfolio...i am already working on pencil-drawn sketches....i think digital format would be an added advantage...and i am pretty good at Adobe photoshop, any other software that you would recommend??

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello,
Good you are sketching and practicing :)
I really don’t feel that software skills are that necessary. Similarly, digital portfolio need not hold any more advantages than one made by hand. They see your thinking and your ability to solve problems. For the institutes your software skills are not very important. If you have an awesome interface, that has no content, the interview committee will not give it any credit! Therefore, I recommend you to develop your thinking through understanding what Is considered to be good product/interface. You may read online articles. Simply google ‘most innovative products’ or ‘best interfaces’ and you will know where to look :)

There are tips on how to make a graphic design portfolio in this blog. You can go through them

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Jinesh,
If you have an AIR 400 score, i feel you have qualified. Dont judge your score now, you should apply to all the IITs you are eligible for, you might receive a call.

Unknown said...

there seem to be two parts to the exam... he has 75.5 for part A and 44 for part B.... his AIR is 437... however i am guessing that like all other design institutes there has to be a minimum qualifying marks for each part.. if so is 44 on part B bad!!??

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

hello anushri pandey joshi ,
You are right. There is a qualifying score for every institute, but it varies lot each year. Therefore, i recommend that instead of judging the score to be good or bad yourself, leave it to institutes to decide. I feel, he should try his luck, and hence apply for all the institutes that he is eligible for. There are chances, he might make it!!
Best of luck :)

Hello Palash,
There are about 200 MDes seats all over India
I feel that, instead of judging your own score, you should leave it to IIT people.
You have qualified the CEED, now just apply. There are chances that you might get through, or you may not, but unless you apply, there are 100 percent chances you wont! So just apply :)

I also want to know what is basic difference between Interaction design and Visual Communication? I am confused between these two. (I am fresher in this field)

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Riken.
In visual communication you design graphics that the user can only see, while in interaction design, you design graphics which the user can not only see, but also manipulate. There is some overlap. For example, the icon on your PC desktop is a graphic (designed by graphic designer) that you can double click, delete, rename, copy, etc (designed by interaction designer)
Hope i could communicate the difference

nw planning 2 go for BFA..
shud go for CEED(m.des)??
is there any handwork in mdes or all digital???

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Rohit ,
MDes is about design, and not purely about arts. A designer may use any medium including fine arts to communicate. For example, designer wants to solve the problem of AIDS by spreading awareness by use of posters. He can choose to make posters using CORELDraw (digital) or using oil colours on canvas (traditional). Whereas, an artist need not always "solve" problems. They can create something beautiful just for the sake of it! Thats the difference between arts and design.

Hope I answered your doubt

Best of luck

I think Visual Communication would be perfect choice for you

An ideal portfolio consists of the following :
1. few sketches presenting some idea
2. couple of posters about some public issue
3. Few logo designs, right from the concept sketches to final work
4. some nice packaging design concept
5. Optionally a few ads for print

You can put your magazine covers in it too. I dont feel its needed to show it to me, since its already some work you have done and wont be able to change anyway. But you can mail me a PDF on my gmail id. pg2005.pg@gmail.com

sir is there and colleg ein the USA that considers the CEED rank ...
my friend told me that there are colleges that take admissions on the basis of the CEED rank

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

I am not aware about this. Maybe your friend might help you with whereabouts of such colleges :)

Unknown said...

if i qualify for ceed exam , i mean if the rank is below 300(AIR) & if i am just qualified in GATE , will it reflect on my admission process of ceed. please let me know the exact procedure of admission through ceed. am confused with this things.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Raj Shekar,
IITs or IISc has never given out the cut-offs so maybe you have a great chance even if your CEED rank is below 300. GATE score is valid only for IISc and IITK. It is not know if they consider any percentage of these scores or whether they just treat them as a cut-off.
Apart from this, your best bet is to just apply regardless of this.
Best of luck

Unknown said...

so finally how many seats are going to fill after interviews through all this process.. As you have stated that there are 300 seats and through ceed, dat & interview only 30 seats are going to fill .. and one more thing if the ceed rank is 300(AIR) and below .. will the seat be confirmed or may rejected in interview..

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Actually the 30 and 300 are numbers taken for reference. More realistically there are about 20 seats for each branch at IDC. Its not know whats the cutoff and selection depends on DAT and the interviews, so its not possible to tell if CEED rank 300 is enough or not

Hi Prassana..I will be writing Gate-2014 in Computer Science.I want to know How is the scope, payscale, work pressure for M.Des freshers. Is it a good specialization to pursue in the long run?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Abhishek,
In my opinion, MTech and MDes can only e compared on basis of what is your interest. I know people from both fields who are paid quite well and have awesome careers, but i believe that it is because those guys chose the fields they really love working in. So i suggest you to do some introspection and give your best shot at what you would like to do for next few years :)

Hi Prasanna,
I have applied for CEED this year. I need your help in understanding which course to select - Communication or Interaction design.

I did get a basic idea on how they are different. But, still in doubt.

I have done BE and have experience into web and graphics design. I design websites, logo, branding, posters, anime characters etc. My hobby is sketching and painting and would like to stick to the creative field.

Please suggest the best suitable design course offered by IDC.

Thanks

Hi RashBab,
You can try out this small quiz :)
It may give you the answer

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Sampada,
Even if you have not marked your Part B question on the online system, it will be evaluated, to the best of my knowledge. This is because, its physical copy is present and it will be forwarded to the concerned examiner. So dont worry :)

Hii prasanna,

(Sorry to post doubts on two different discussions but thought this one is the latest thread to get a response)
Happy new year first of all.
I qualified for ceed with rank 212
My marks in part b is 34/100.
Idc has kept their cutoff 50+ for gen catg n so I can only apply to the self sponsered catgry.
Looking at the first experience from idc, I feel the cutoffs for other institutes will also be this high and I won't make it to the applications even :(
Do you have any idea or experience to share in this regard?
I am b.tech n think I can apply to kanpur, Bangalore n Delhi.
Though again I dont think the rank can help for any sort as seats are too less.
Shall I wait and start preparation for portfolio or plan for next year?

Regards,
Nitin

Unknown said...

And yes, I have a qualified score. Still as per rank n seats available ratio.. I raise my doubts.

T K M said...

Hi Nitin,

I am Mukesh. I have the same Ceed score and rank as yours, 34 and 212. Do you know how is it possible?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Nitin,
If 2 candidates score the exact same score why would they have different ranks?
IDC has published a new brochure, according to which you are eligible at 34 :)

Unknown said...

Hey prassana,
Thanks to you that I reachecked.
Though its 'more than 34' now. Mine is dot 34 . :P
That means m not eligible I guess. Right?

Yes Nitin! Doesn't it feel wonderful :)

Unknown said...

Hahaha.
I m in a state of confusion between the 'war of words'. ^_^
'More than 34' is 34.5. :/
Are you saying am not eligible or eligible?
Sorry to see poke you this bad for past 30mins. :)

Hey, Mr.Gadkari,... this year I appeard 4 CEED (without ny prep)..and scored a 31 (AIR-303)..do you think I can apply for any D-schools (especially IDC)???

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Prasam
I dont think it will be wise to apply for IDC, but you can apply to other IITs and IISc
leave it to them to decide whether you are good enough for them or not!

Just a question,

Has anyone received their respective rank cards as of yet?
I am still waiting for mine and last date to apply is 27th. If I can't post my form by Monday..it won't reach by 27th.

Whether, I should apply for duplicate one or not????? plss ...reply....

Hi Aditya,
Score card is pretty imp document. Its required to be submitted in the original at the time of admission

Unknown said...

Hii prasanna..
The final phase of the portfolio is going on ... so just thought to ask u...
U mentioned on one of the page that the portfolio should be small ...of max 15 pages. I have 4projects to show... that too in interaction design ...
And then my previous works as well. Don't u think 15 pages will be like a rush?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

hi Nitin ,
15 pages is a very rough term. its like saying "you need two tea spoon of sugar in a cup of tea". It all depends upon the work you are showing and what you are planning tell about them. If you feel confident about what you are doing, i am sure this might be a good idea.

Is 15 pages a rush? Not really. But again it depdns at the time you have and the amount of work you need to squeeze in those pages

All the best :)

may i know which institute takes GATE score for M.des ?and does anybody have rough idea of that cut off.

minu said...

I got through in iisc m des. your blog really helped.
was shortlisted through my gate score 892(AR) Any body who needs help with GATE architecture study materials or preparation there is a blog with notes i made during my preparation http://gateprep-architecture.blogspot.in/
. everybody who is shortlisted has to go through DAT and Interview. There were 106 people present for the DAT and interview. DAT part A was from 9: 30 am to 10: 45 am and Part B was from 10:45 to 12:00pm. Part A has some ceed part a like questions (missing pattern etc.) Then there were about 11 problems from which we had to answer 5. There were questions from kinematics, probability, electric circuits, torque, motor, fluid mechanics, to draw BM and SF diagram of beams etc). Part B had CEED part B like questions plus some questions on latest technology like google glasses, 4G, new phone/car models etc.
Interview panel was quite friendly.Initiallly they asked me why i am changing my stream. They asked me basic questions about architecture which i think i answered well. then they asked me to name 3 badly designed products with reasoning, one well designed product...The low point in the interview was when they asked me about the cpdm department. i said they offered b des which they did not offer. I was asked to provide a solution for improving the design of the professors eyeglasses, he did not like the process of changing lenses etc..i tried to come up with solutions for all questions. they just went through my portfolio..no questions asked... overall was a good experience...

Siddhartha Singh said...

Dear minu,
Thank you for explaining the whole selection procedure...and yes, many congratulations for getting the m.des program at iisc. I just had one doubt regarding your post. You have mentioned that part A of DAT asked questions about kinematics, probability, electric circuits, torque, motor, fluid mechanics, to draw BM and SF diagram of beams etc...are these type of questions being asked to all the candidates regardless of what their specified or intended field in design is, or this was just for your design stream? I am interested in product and transportation design by the way.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Sidds,
Answering on behalf of Minu. IISc offers course in Product Design only, so they ask these type of engineering questions to everyone regardless of whether they have applied from GATE or CEED background. If you wish to pursue MDes in mobility, you should apply to IITB. You can read their DAT experience in the success stories
All the best

Hello Sir,
i am an Architecture graduate student, and i am appearing CEED this year.. i went through the prev year question papers of part A.. i also got books from a coaching institute and i am preparing at home. there is super vast course, and i am not able to focus what to study and what not to. please help me with this.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Ankita,
Since CEED is 2 months away, i suggset you to first dedicate your time to sketching everyday objects. Take this week to master your sketching skills and shading practice. In the month of November, start with your Part A prep. This is because you are likely to forget the small details in Part A, while sketching skill is difficult to forget. You can study selectively since the time is short. Since you have gone through the old CEED papers, you have the feel of what sort of questions can appear in CEED. You can read only as much as you feel is relevent and ignore the part which you feel is not required

Unknown said...

thank you Sir.. :)

Dear sir

i am a B- TECH MECHANICAL Design engineer now working in a design company on CAD software and having interest over Logo design, calligraphy and sketching.which subject i should choose if im selected in ceed and which institute will be better for that plz inform.

and i want to know the total no of sheet available for Mdes in iits and iisc

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Soumya,
Looking by your interest in logo design, calligraphy and sketching, i am tempted to say that visual communication will be better for you, but i recommend that you suspend your discision as of now, because when preparing for CEED you will be exposed to many other design streams. This exposure might show that you are interested in some other branch than VC. Therefore, i suggest you to ask this question to yourself right before filling the form. Looking at your existing works even i might be able to tell you where your skills will be best used :)
All the best!

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi,
CEED is an entrance exam for getting admission into MDes program offered at IITs. If you want to become a designer and pursue a career in design, you should appear for CEED and get admission into IIT. As a designer from best college in india, you will get best job in design industry, which will be much better than what you will get than doing software courses from private institute, so I suggest that if you wish to become a designer, please do appear for CEED :)

All the best!
