How to prepare for CEED

-->
Hi,
We all know you rock… u are a techie with a knack for art. You r not satisfied with engineering, since the drawings are not ‘aesthetic’ enough for you. So what you need maybe a design degree that combines the art and technology, something new and innovative. You know that you are born to be a designer. And you need that M.Des degree real bad. But there is a glitch… its called CEED. Is it a glitch after all? Lets simplify the issues. How to prepare for getting into M.Des?
1. See the previous years papers
You need to set up a strategy of what you will face. Good if you have a friend in IDC or NID, who can help you with some old papers. If not, then see here. This site will help you give some last 3 years of paper. Study them well, to know what will be asked.
2. Sketching saves, and is fun too
Good if you can sketch cartoons. CEED requires you to sketch some everyday objects. This should include representing objects as they are, with their material and texture. You need not be too great still life artist, but you should be able to convey through your sketches well.
3. Learn Freehand sketching
Most of the time using instruments is not allowed in CEED. It will help you to learn basics of freehand sketching. The best way is to sit with pencil and paper and try to sketch.
4. Practice with the right equipments
Fortunately for CEED, all you need is pencil and brains. So what pencil do you use? Always try to use 2 grades of pencil: H-grade for rough work, light drawings, etc and B for rapid work and where shading is involved. A wooden pencil works best, but sometimes a 0.7 mm pencil is best kept in reserve. Also, pack a non-dust eraser. Kneadable eraser is the best, but slightly expensive
5. Improve Visualization skills
What you see is what you draw. Sometimes, you have to “see” in your mind. This is visualization. So, first try to get best picture of what you want to sketch in your mind, then think about it, and then put your pencil to the paper. Try this: How would a glass mug filled with water look?
6. Enhance Creativity
It might be helpful to think laterally. For example, list 10 uses of a coin other than currency. And do this within a minute. I hope you get the point.
7. Read daily comic strip
This might sound silly, but comic strips actually are an example of a storyboard. Sometimes questions are asked to represent a storyline, say, how will you make a cup of tea. This will need your sketching skills as well as story-telling ability. So don’t just laugh at jokes in comic strips but see how they have told it, and why they have draw things in the way they appear.
These tips will help you enhance your skills and help you crack the CEED, but ultimately the skill lies within your practice and how well you practice. What is written above is my experience and something else may work for you, so feel free to experiment. Do write to me about your experience.

Hello sir
Im sorry but i didn't :) understand the concept of using cuboidal eraser to get solution of unfolded tetrahedron ( i suppose i can't use scissors and paper for help) ...and do you have any solution for understanding different font types?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Chetan,
I am composing a new post for this reply on font types and the folding questions. will reply shortly. plz hang on till then

Chetan Yadav said...

Hello sir
Please do it at your own pace. I'm not in any kind of hurry. Thank you.

Mrinalkumarsharma said...

Dear sir,
Regarding the tetarhedron question, the basic concept here to solve such types of question is like: the tetrahedron fig as given in ceed question consists of two symmetrical heads. As when two similar parts joined with each other, its form a tetrahedron.
So there were 4 options in question, which ask to identify the wrng one.
Mr. Chetan see the options carefully, 3 unfolded view follows the concept of symmmetry, if u cut those fig in any way 2 equal parts will be there. So these 3 were one which make tetrahdron.
The left one, is not a symmetrical one(cutting into 2 halfs will not make 2 equal halfs)
Hope u understood this question:
Good luck

Mrinal

Mr. Chetan
The font type question is often asked in ceed, so the best way to understand this questuion is:
A single aplhabet is composed of diifernt parts like the serrifs , x height, cap height , ascender line, descender line, strokes etc.(for further see in google about graphhic design)
See the seriffs carefully, alphabets belonging to same group has same seriffs. With this way u can easily find out the font types :
Hope u find this helpful.

Chetan Yadav said...

Hello Mrinal sir
first of all congrats for nid. It was nice to read about your experience. I went through your trick and found it useful. The ans is third from left... Thank you, but I think this trick would work only for symetric figures. And as far as fonts are concerned I will search with the terms you mentioned.

Hi Prasanna bhaiya,
Im a 3rd year b.tech dairy student and am preparing for ceed 2013.I sketch well, and had a long-time-nurtured ambition to blend art with tech, but initially i was a little hesitant, and so emailed to most of the profs of IIsc and IITs,and Prof.S.K.Atreya Sir of IIT Delhi, greatly convinced me through his mail. Now, as i am in the mid way of preparation, i would like to ask you some questions:
1.Shall i use water colour or wax crayons in ceed, i mean, is the paper quality good enough?
2.In the creativity part(say in ceed 2010), i practised with the cone, discs and wire, and made a water filter, but will i be able to use other portions such as membrane, holder etc? Because they have asked "interesting products", and products look absurd without some accessories, isn't it?
3.In the interview part, how can i increase my portfolio, experience, so that i can have better chances?
4.And finally this is just for information, how many days' gap is there between the publication of result and part-b interview,as i saw in one blog, that a particular boy and his friend had only a weeks time to get things ready, set up and pack up to IIT Bombay, for IDC admission test..
I would be ever indebted to you if you kindly answer my queries.
Yours ever,
Arunava Das

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Arunava,
Thanks for dropping by :)
Let me reply ur questions:
1. The quality of CEED paper closely resembles that of the news papers, only a bit heavier. I do not recommend any liquid based colors to be used. So don’t use water colors, poster colors or even sketch pens and markers!
2. The creativity question asks you to uses these objects to communicate the form only. Members like membrane, etc are not needed. It is a purely form based question and not a product design question
3. you can read about portfolio making tips here. If you feel I missed out anything, plz feel free to comment about it.
4. There is typically very less gap between declaration of results and further admission procedure like DAT and interviews. Again, this time varies for each institute and changes each year
Hope your doubts are clarified?
There are few more helpful tips listed here
By the way, What reply did you receive from the profs?
Best of luck

hi
is coaching required to prepare for ceed/nid.
i am not getting the kick start .
how to start off the prep
please help me out

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Sandy,
I personally dont think that coaching is necessary for CEED or NID entrance. There are so many students, including me, who cleared it and got admission, without any coaching.
You can start off the preparation by downloading papers from IIT-B site here Then go through them and try to solve them. This will give you a good idea about what CEED is about and what all skills are needed

Best luck

HEllo Rahul,
There is an automotive design course offered at IIT-B. You can see the course contents here
Also MIT-Pune, DSK-Pune and DYP-DC have courses among non-IITs

Ankita Deb said...

hi prasanna
i'll be going into my fourth year of engineering(IT) this year from july onwards. I was interested in appearing for NID entrance as well as CEED as i want to pursue PG in Design.....if i want to join immediately after i complete BE, am i too late for application? Should i be appearing for the exam on 2013 because as of now i don't have any sort of preparation but i do have a knack for drawing. Also, is the kind of preparation required for NID and CEED the same?

Ankita Deb said...

Also, do we need to apply separately to all the desired colleges separately along with the CEED application?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Ankita,
1. Most of the colleges have already began for course of 2012 – 2014, therefore its too late to apply now. You can apply for CEED 2013 (which will be probably held in Dec 2012) now. Generally the score is valid for 2 years, so you can join for 2013 and also in 2014 course
2. Your knack for sketching is more than 50% of the skill required!! So you can just go ahead and apply!!!
3. Though this blog mainly discusses the CEED preparation, there are many of the aspirants who have got admission to NID using the similar methods. For example you can see Mrinal's experience
4. There is no centralized admission for IITs and NIDs, so you need to apply for institutes individually. The worst part is sometimes the dates of interview clash :(
Best of luck!!
Ask me anything you need to know :)

Ankita Deb said...

Thank you so much for replying Prasanna. I really appreciate you offering your help.
Well, i will be graduating in the summer of 2013 so there is no way i can join the 2012-14 course in any case....so yeah, i will definitely try and appear this year in dec.
So to begin with, how should I kickstart my preparation? I mean should i join some coaching institute(though i really don't want to, but if required i definitely will) or should i buy online self-study material or should i just go get a preparatory book from my book store? I'm really confused about this....:(

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Ankita,
Its not necessary to thank me really. I do it for fun :)
I personally think that its not necessary to join any classes for CEED. To begin your preparations I recommend you to download CEED papers from IIT-B site. Google this up to get the link for previous years papers. This will give you a clear idea of what CEED is about. Secondly, try to attempt few of the questions of your choice. You can send the solutions to me and discuss them with me. Probably we can come up with what practice is needed. This way, you can concentrate on very specific topics instead of wasting your time over unnecessary details.
Best of luck :)

Ankita Deb said...

Hey Prasanna
I will definitely look up some papers online and try to solve a few questions as soon as possible. I'll try and send you a few solutions as well as you mentioned.....:)
Again, are there any books you would like to refer or are the sample papers good enough practice?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Ankita,
CEED is a very unpredictable exam. Even more so, after the introduction of Part-A and B. I personally feel that a book on CEED cannot be written, since there is no fixed syllabus, yet you can develop a suitable skill set. This is the exact reason why we can discuss your work and then decide where you should focus. For this i feel, sample papers are enough, as they have worked with most of the people i met.
Best luck :)

hi prasanna,
can u tell me how to increase my sketching techniques

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Prateek,
There are a few quick ways to improve your sketching skills:
1. Use sketching exercises described here
2. Sketch simple everyday objects by seeing them
3. Instead of taking notes using words try to take them using pictures only!! (this is sure way to improve your communication through sketches!!)
4. Keep a design diary, where you keep your sketches and sketch anything thats interesting! this way you can keep a track of your improvements!
If you have more ideas plz feel free to share

Hello sir,
i am first year engineering student , and i am interested in transportation designing . I am just OK in sketching objects , but better with cars, so do need to improve in sketching other objects too?
As of now i am comfortable with pencils , do i need to work with other mediums like rendering software, water colors etc.....?
And as i have got 3 years in my hand for preparations what would you suggest me to do ?
or in fact i am eager to listen everything you have got to tell about preparing for 'transportation design '!
Regards
p.sanvid

sanvid said...

And one more thing I am not interested in any specific institute , i want to prepare for as many institutes as possible in or outside India .

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello p.sanvd,
I feel CEED is about communicating your ideas through sketches and not about sketching alone.
You don’t need to work with any other medium other than pencils for CEED. The CEED paper is not of quality to support watercolors.
As to begin your practice I suggest you to go through the previous year CEED papers. You can download them here http://www.iitb.ac.in/~pge/2k12/ceed/
If you are preparing for many institutes, you will need a portfolio of that type. For this, I recommend you to practice sketching cars side by side to your CEED preparation. Both skills are different though related
Best of luck :)

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Kiran,
Interaction design deals with the study of how a person and a device act together
Visual communication deals with using visual media like posters, movies, etc. to communicate a certain message to the intended people
I believe that both interaction design and Visual communication can help u, since web design contains some information that needs to be conveyed and some element of interaction in form of user interface. Further, you can always direct your skill towards certain aspect of design later on in your career by taking up suitable courses or on-job trainings

Best of luck :)

Hello sir
Thank you for the answer .The answer and whole the rest of the blogs are very useful for me .
can you please provide me some guidance for showing reflections of different materials especially metals ?like some videos, tutorials ... i am unable to find some 'good' stuff on the net.
Thanks again :)

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello p.sanvd,
I am really sorry, but I do not know much about the rendering. Being from the product design field (and not from fine arts) I focus on communication of idea through sketches, rather than on realistic presentation. This is bad to the extent that I have to show arrow and write “glass, 3 mm thick” to show glass :P
Even in CEED I always preferred to solve the idea-generation and innovation questions rather than visual communication and sketching questions.
I am simply keep my sketching skills enough to communicate the idea rather than making a piece of art :)
Sorry about not being able to answer your question

Till now i didn't know that it's possible to avoid showing reflections just by mentioning them !

Hello Leo,
To the best of my knowledge, all the MDes courses offered at IITs, IISc and NID are full time courses, except for IIT-G. you can read more about it here
This might be because, the course gives an intensive hands-on training and experience that will not be possible without the infrastructure and well equipped labs offered by these institutes.
Best of luck

Hi Prasanna !

Find your blog while searching help for ceed preparation. It answered a lot of questions that were in my mind except one. The question is -

is age and gap after completing your engineering a factor while IITs considering students for M.design admissions.

I am a 32 year old mechanical engineer with 5 years work exp. in automotive welding fixture design. I completed by B.E. back in 2002. Worked in industry till 2008.I was always intrested in design and that's why chose the field of cad/cam. but the kind of work i was doing(automotive BIW welding fixture design) was not able to satisfying my desires as a designer.

I was not satisfied at all.

So under the influence of my family's prodding and in a zeal to change things around me through joining the top government jobs i quite my job and started preparing for UPSC and state pcs exams. Although i learnt a lot from this process but ultimately i was not able to clear these exams. I flunked at UPSC at the mains exam stage and in state pcs at interviews because i dont have any political connections that are required to clear state pcs interview.

even though i feel very lost and under confident after all this but still there is that desire to design and make new things. I don't know how the interview panel going to look at all this mess that i have created in my life.

Even though i am studying a lot about visual communication design and web and software interface design and programming on my own and planning to launch my own company in this field within next few months but still i wish to pursue a formal M.Design course so that i can work with more confidence in this field.
I just wish to know is there any chance for me to get in a M.Design course and work in the area of my liking.

Thanks.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Praveen,

Sorry to hear your story about UPSC. You can appear for CEED and get admission to IITs, if you fulfill rest of the criteria set down by the institutes you wish to apply for. And none of the IITs have any limit for age for MDes course. So just go ahead and put your best effort :)

i am holding a bachelor degree in mechanical production engg, and i am an aspirant for ceed and nid..last time i appeared for ceed exam,as you know from last year they have changed the pattern of the exam.i cleared part a but all together i was not able to clear the general cutoff last time because of 6 marks.because of my passion to this field i am appearing this time also.some of the queries in which i need ur suggestion is that.
1.in part A they usually ask gk..apart from that in what all field we have to cocentrate for this one word preperation( because this time also we are having multiple choice questions and we have to clear part a)
2.last time in part b they asked 2 questions
first one to check the perspective, line quality, shading and all(i was not that good at perspective but i am practising),but the second question is to design a bottle opener to open the bottle of jams and pickles for elders.i have answered the question but i need to improve my design as i havent got sufficient marks for that.my problem is that i do have the ability to design but i need to improve..i dont know in what respect i need to improve..i think you got my point.as you are professional designer i humbly ask you to solve this question so that i can compare the deign and can improve my concepts.also i need some to tips to improve my designing concepts

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Aravind,

You know, maybe you can use some of the creativity techniques that I have described to generate some nice concepts here

The quality of ideas depend upon a lots of factors. Mainly, you should think about some ideas that no one else can think about. For example, most ppl will think about some sort of adjustable band that will wrap around the lid so that elderly people can open the pickle bottle. Now, think about the out of box ideas: how about a chemical compound that will loosen the lid? Or maybe you apply a some heat to loosen the lid to extract it.

Probably you need to generate radical concepts and communicate them using sketches

Dear prasanna,
I noticed that CEED exams repeat "identify similar font" type problems. I find these problems difficult,is there any definite way to solve problems like that?
For instance, how do you solve question 1.4
http://www.iitb.ac.in/~pge/ceed_qp/images/qp2k10.pdf

Gautham said...

sorry i'm using up too many posts...let me put up all my questions in this one post
1. I noticed that CEED exams repeat "identify similar font" type problems. I find these problems difficult,is there any definite way to solve problems like that?

2. Would have some time to spare to have a look at the ceed papers that i've solved?

3. I saw a post advising those preparing for CEED to sketch whatever you see. Right now i'm looking at a stack of pillows with my laptop on it, I find it difficult just to sketch a single pillow, I don't know how i'm going to manage sketching a whole lot of them, so..how do i improve?

4. In CEED, questions like designing an egg shaped product are common. There could be an egg shaped time traveler. I know time traveling machines are a fantasy, but if i say that the streamlined shape of the egg helps you to slide through time easily on the answer sheet, would i be considered idiotic, or would the idea of am egg shaped machine be a plus for creativity? please reply frankly

5.In questions where you have to find a particular item's place in its period of evolution, i always place plastic after metal..for ex, i place plastic telephone after the one made of metal, is my general approach that plastic comes after metal right?

that's all for now, thanks in advance

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Gautham,
Its no problem. Feel free to ask your questions.

1. you should study the different font family for this kind of problem. Its beyond the scope of this blog to explain in depth about different font families. You can read it here

2. sure. Send me your answers to pg2005.pg@gmail.com

3. Ceed is not purely about sketching! Its about communicating the concepts using correct sketches. You can think about the situation of communicating pillows for supporting laptop, can you do it? Maybe not very realistic, but is your concept clearly communicated?

4. You are right, it can be a time traveling device. But then how do you know that “shape of the egg helps you to slide through time”?? Instead if you make a boat with it, it would be more realistic!

5. have you seen the new iPod? It has got metal back. Originally iPods are always made in plastic! Your hypothesis about plastics replacing metal is a bit biased. I feel you should have a look at technology first, then materials. You can say, the buttons replaced the dialer on phones.

Best of luck

Hello Somya,
You can go through the 2012 CEED paper here to get the feel of question paper, if you have not done so already. As you can see the pattern is largely based on visual aptitude and GK related to Indian design. It is too vast to cover in a single source, you will have to read newspaper daily and see whats going on in design world.

hello sir,i have gone through the previous yr question papers but i want solutions...becaus everyone has different perspective...so how should i prepare? or what are expectations of examinars?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Shraddha,
Your question is very interesting one. The Part-B of the CEED will be evaluated as per the taste of examiners. Yet, the basic things that will be evaluated in your answer are:
1. Quality of your idea: How practical and innovative your idea is
2. How you convey the idea: When the sketch is drawn, how well is the idea understood from it. A good sketch is all it takes to completely understand your thinking
3. how detailed you have thought: Have you thought how the product will be used? or how detailed your storyboard considers environment

Hope this helps
Best luck :)

Hello sridhar and Hemant,
First of all, i recommend you to go through the Part A of CEED 2012 exam and get an idea about the paper. If you observe, it is pretty straight forward. Still it is so diverse that its hard to write down how to prepare for it. One thing is for sure, you will need to read newspaper daily. I am still working on how to prepare for Part A

For scoring, they consider combined score of both parts. But if you score lower than cut off in Part A, your Part B wont be evaluated.

Best luck

Also i am really.. really interested in the animations course.. however my only plus point would be that i am pretty good at sketching... (I do caricatures, portraits and stuff) However i dont really have much to show even if i make it through ceed. Do they only take u if u have done any work in animation?? Advise PLEASE!

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Hrishi,
I can understand your point. It is very much possible to secure admission into the course you wish for, just by scoring well in entrance test, and by preparing a good portfolio. I feel that if you are good at drawing caricatures and portraits, you must have a portfolio already in place. Now you have to clear CEED and NID studio test.
If you want me to evaluate your work and want some of my opinions on how to present it, you can mail them to me.

perpering thr such study material is tat enough to crack such exam???
what ealse i need to study???? n how plz

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Shrikant,

There are too many factors involved in clearing CEED. I believe downloading preparation material from net, might be one of the steps, but it depends on how dedicatedly you follow that, how well you attempt your paper, how relevant is your preparation , what kind of questions are asked in CEED this year, etc.

I have already posted my opinion on what to study and how to do it, in this post as well as other related posts. I recommend to go through them. This will give you some idea about how to prepare. If you have any specific doubts, plz feel free to ask.

Hi
this is Palash and am also a Ceed Aspirant.
Firstly i want to congratulate you as you are doing a great job and Collecting Praises.
Also i Have a question that m not that Good in Color theory so while Sketching in Exam should i use only the shading to describe the Essentiality or should i compulsively start working on the color part . Pls Reply.

3 years and still this article is working good! now coming to my problem. I'm an engg grad and i'm appearin for ceed this year. I'm looking forward to Animation at IDC, could you tell me what should i include into the portfolio's because though interested, i never had any real shot at animation. Also, for the exam...i'm good at sketching but not remarkable. I'm trying to polish it but till what extent do you suggest i improve it? As the CEED paper seems like an art exam in section B, it all comes down to how good you can draw. And I'm not too handy with colors. Would that be an issue?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello palash ghosh,
Thank you for the praise :)
There are two kinds of questions in CEED. Ones like "sketch a loaf of bread..." or "Half filled glass of water with spoon" In these questions you are evaluated based on your sketching and shading skills. Whereas for questions like "five uses of egg shaped form" expect your ideas to be good. I recommend not to waste your time shading and coloring here.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Abhi,
Yeah! Its an old post, but is frequently updated based on experiences shared by others, so its still pretty fresh.
I feel, as of now, you need to focus on CEED preparation. Once you are out of this hassle, plz mail me some of your works, and lets see if we can simply “animate” it using some simple techniques. Also, you need to build few caricatures and character sketches, that will reflect your interest.
I am sure that you can manage pretty well in CEED even if you don’t use a single piece of color. This will be a problem only with questions like “Feminine car” or “angry shoe” problems from previous years. Also, its still not too late to sketch and learn to draw everyday objects like mobile phones, combs, pens, etc. I feel a comb should appear like a comb, in your sketch. If it does, your sketching is good
You can mail me your work for evaluation, if you wish to :)

what is different in NID with respect to CEED.
and how to prepaper for it

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Nitin,
NID entrance exam is more focused on practical aspects like material properties, rendering and aesthetics, while CEED has many elements of puzzle like questions apart from this. In general NID exam was reported to be tougher than CEED by most candidate who appeared for both. I never appeared for NID entrance, so i feel i am not eligible to comment on the preparation tips :(
Though i often help people with NID preparation :)

dear prasanna,
i just completed my b.e.computer science and i'm appearing ceed this time.i take too much time touching up drawing.i took 30 min to complete a question of "drawing bread and knife on a plate".how will i reduce time? and also your opinion about time management in the exam?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Varun,

I am sure spending 30 minutes on such problem is reasonable. You can attempt the rest of the question in relatively shorter time. Time management is simple. First try to see what you can score the most on. Then devote maximum time to it. And whatever time is left over, you can spend on questions you wont score well anyway.

For example, suppose you are good at such sketches, then you can spend half an hour on it, while giving only 15 minutes to attempt the aptitude question, which you may not be so good at

I have always wanted to pursue my career in design, specifically product design. Now, i am planning to appear for CEED 2014. I am ok with my sketching skills. I am able to copy anything using pencil sketching. Please guide me how to prepare for CEED 2014.

Hi Tejaswi ,
If you are applying for VC, no need for models.
But for PD/ID or IxD models will make your portfolio better
Best of luck

Hi prasanna, firstly thnks for such gtr help for CEED by ur blog, I cleared my BE in electronics with many back papers in each sem but i have very much interest in sketching n drawing n i want to do M.des. is there any chances of getting admission if i cleared CEED with good numbers bcaz i can draw n sketch anythng, plz help... thnks..

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Amit,
As given on various IIT sites, the eligibility criteria for MDes does not specify acceptable number of backlogs. So I believe that you wont be rejected just because of having backlogs, provided you clear all of them and complete your BE before getting admission for the course.

AMIT said...

Thanks for your fast reply. your all post related to CEED are awesome..

is ceed only for postgraduate ??? not for undergraduates

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello harshit,
Valid CEED score entitles you for the MDes course and for MDes course, you need to have a bachelors degree, so its not for undergraduate courses. There are other exams for BDes courses, for example one held at IITG

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Puneet,
Dont worry, to the best of my knowledge you are eligible. You can call up IITB for confirmation.
I personally feel that for preparation of CEED no books are needed, all you need to do is practice old papers and focus on sketching ideas

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi puneet,
Download old papers here
I can help you with designing skills, and not only sketching
Plz solve CEED 2011 Q-1, to my e-mail address pg2005.pg@gmail.com so that i can understand where you need practice

Hi Prasanna sir and everybody else here. I am not here for any queries on CEED preparations as you all have provided more than enough information on that.

However my question is about the assistanship offered at IDC, IITB. As you all have guessed money management is a necessity for me i want answers on following:

1. What is the total fee for M.desg at IDC and NID respectively
2. The Teachers Assistanship, is it offered to everyone
3. Some of my friends say that Masters pursuing students get stipend of around Rs.8000 pm; is it true or not?

I am really looking forward for quick replies as my further planning and preparation depends on it. Especially replies from current IDC students will of great help.

Regards,
Karthik

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Gautham,
Here are some pointers to your questions:

1. You may need to study how a font is formed. There is lots of information available on web if you search for typography and typefaces

2. Can you mail it to me on the email address in my profile?

3. You may want to buy a book called "drawing Made EAsy" by Subodh Narvekar. It contains the basics of sketching. You can build up from there. Also, keep in mind, during CEED, you should focus on expressing your own ideas and sketch from memory. The drawing of objects in front of you is purely for practice in sketching

4. The questions such as "use the given form" tests the candidates ability to think creatively given a certain shape. Since no one has seen time machine (unless a visitor from future evaluates your paper :P), this idea will be too far fetched to be considered as true use of egg shaped form. Best steer away from unrealistic ideas, unless the question itself asks use of unrealistic product like "invisible paint" that appeared in one of the CEED papers!

5. Though plastics were invented later than metals, the finishing processes evolved for processing metals evolved even later than plastics! In short, would you place iPhone, made of aluminum earlier than say, Nokia 1100 just because the former is made of metal?

You can further join CEED Help group on facebook to get your answers and questions reviewd by peer and experts :)

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Karthik,

1. The fee varies from institute to institute. If you get admission into NID your total fees wil be in the range of Rs. 2,10,000 to 2,60,000
while for IITs it varies from Rs. 65,000 but you will get a TA scholarship

2. Yes, Teaching Assistance is offered to everyone at IDC and other IITs, but you may opt out of it by talking to the proper administration, thereby forfeiting the scholarship too

3. Yes, the stipend of Rs. 8000 is available either as TA or as IISc provides through MHRD :)

All the best!

Hi Prasanna
I am the student of B.Tech Mechanical Engineer

I have skills in
AutoCAD
CATIA
SolidWorks
PTC Creo
ANSYS Workbench
NX CAM
I have skill in Engineering Drawing and can draw mechanical parts.
Please reply me that is CEED is better option for me ?
Or is there any connection between Mechanical Research and Development and Master of Design.
Because I am confusing that there is no relation between Master of Design and Mechanical R&D sector ................
Please clear my doubt .

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi SHASHI,
What you have described here are CAD CAM tools. For clearing CEED, you will need to have sills to express your ideas through sketches. These tools may help you in making a portfolio for MDes interview, where you need to express your ideas through 3D models

MDes focuses on conceptual design and problem solving. Following the concept, engineering is carried out to realize this concept. Therefore, there is very less overlap between R&D carried out in engineering and concept design. For example, a MDes practitioner may design exterior body of the car so that it appears attractive to the customer, then using CAD CAM tools the design engineer will design suitable die and press tools to shape the sheet metal as closely as possible to the shape suggested by the MDes practitioner.

Hope i was able to clarify your doubt :)

Hey,
Sir i want to ask that since part B of ceed exam consist 5-6 questions, how many questions would be considered as good attempt? should we try to do all the questions and is it a good idea to start with 50 marks question?

Unknown said...

Sir questions like this, when not mentioned to draw anything, we are just suppose to write the answer?

"Imagine that you are given a hand held magic device, which can reduce the size of any object by 50%. The reduction in size will remain effective for only three hours. To reduce the size, point the device towardan object and press the button. Illustrate two creative applications of this device. If required, support each application with a brief note of no more than 50 words each.
Pay attention to variety, creativity, as well as innovation in the concepts."

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Sakshi,
First go through all the questions and try to determine which solutions readily occur to you or if you have some innovative idea for a problem, then decide the time allocation based on the marks and solve the easy questions first.

For such question writing is optional. You should first try to sketch a self explaining sketch so you wont require to write anything in first place, then you can consider writing a line if needed. This will fetch you better marks since concepts are best explained through sketches.

All the best :)

Hello sir, I read about your experience on teacup blog.
I am doing my final year in EEE Engineering. I have learnt sketching from a very young age and with that interest I applied for Graphic design and animation film studio MDes course at NID for 2016 batch.
I do not know how and where from to prepare for the entrance ( DAT ) . For now I have ordered a few study materials from silica.com.
Can you please let me know where I can get sample papers with solutions and guide me as to how to go about preparing?

My exam is in JAN and i am lagging behind in preparation.
Looking forward to hearing from you at the earliest :)

- Sudakshina

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Sudakshina,
You sketching practice will help you for NID DAT. I feel that you should have a look at the sample DAT given on the NID site. This test has some questions from the last DATs and made as per the revised syllabus. This is the only official material avalable for NID DAT. Apart from this, solving CEED papers will also help you deal with the aptitude test problems.
I dont know how useful is the material from silica, but something is better than nothing.
All the best for NID DAT :)

Sir, this is Apoorva, currently pursuing my final year in architecture course. I wish to know how suitable is the field of product design to someone making a shift from architecture? And how is the technical part of the working of a product dealt by architecture graduates who have been taught to focus mostly on the aesthetics during their course? I mean does choosing product design as a profession make them only half equipped to deal the subject since they lack the technical expertise that engineering graduates come with? Would be really helpful if you let me know this Sir!
