Design aptitude test and interview carried out in IIT's and IISc

The Design Aptitude Test (DAT) carried out at IISc and IITs is a basic  test that can be said to be a mixture of GATE and CEED questions. Like there r questions like, to find out current in a branch of simple electric circuit, or deflection of beam, which is common study in first year of many courses. Also there are some simple CAT-like aptitude questions like, fill the 5th number in series, etc.

Hi, Prassan this Srinivasan. DAT is a part of the interview or you get selected for interview after you do well in DAT? How does it work? After CEED there is no interview directly is it? One more test?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello,

Here is how it works. CEED score is used to call top 500 (just for reference) applicants to an institute. This is followed by DAT. All 500 are eligible to appear for DAT. From this, say, 150, are selected for interviews. In the interviews, they can fill the number of seats.

Sorry for not clarifying this earlier :(

Best luck.

Hey Prasanna,
I checked out the CPDM website, and it says that the forms are to be filled even before the CEED results are declared...... !!!
Also there is an interesting clause roughly saying....."If your CEED score is high enough......we will give you an DAT call...."??
Has it always been like this?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Dear Indrajeet,

As a follow up to you comment, i have posted a review of the selection process here
Take care

hello prasanna, the dat is scheduled on 21st april .so preparing for the same. can you suggest any books for preparation and websites where i can get relevent information.also any information on the type of questions that may appear. thankyou .

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello ankito,
Thanks for dropping by.
I am looking for books on CEED for a while now, but there appear to be none. And there is good reason for this. CEED is very unpredictable exam and the DAT and interview is too personal to write books on. As stated in the introduction DAT is generally combination of questions similar to CEED and a few aptitude questions, as well as basics of engineering. The pattern vary a great deal each year.
It'll be great if you could contribute your experiences on this blog for benefit of coming batches.

Best luck for DAT and the interviews.

ankito said...

thankyou prasanna,i'll definitely write my experience with the dat.i wish i knew atleast a hint of what they would ask in dat. i request all other bloggers to write their experiences too. this will help other aspirants in future years.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello ankito,

Thanks a lot. Wish all of the readers contribute their experiences like you.

Since you have already cleared CEED, I am sure DAT won’t face much challenge for you, so you can just relax. If you just want to sharpen your skills, just pick up some quantitative aptitude book and brush up your basic engineering fundas.

Waiting for your guest post then

Best of luck :)

Hey, you said something about presenting my portfolio - what exactly should it include? My sketches, obviously, but I was going through your portfolio and you have sketches/ideas/concepts of designer cars, etc. So I haven't exactly designed that kind of stuff, so normal sketches of people, things etc will do? Also, you said that DAT is like CAT with a few Engg. questions - by engg. questions do you mean Engg Maths or other subjects like Electrical, Electronics,Mechanical etc, which we had in the First year of Engg.?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello sriparna,

I have compiled a post to help you to make a portfolio. Plz find it here

Thanks for going through my portfolio, but such evolved portfolio is not necessary to clear the admission interviews. I prepared that portfolio after my M.Des to show to the potential employers. I strongly recommend you to go through the link above. It contains some tips you will find useful.

DAT can contain a few questions testing the basics of your engineering. Like how much a beam will deflect under loading or finding the current though a resistance in a network. Just brush up some First Year books, if you want to. Otherwise they are not that tough too. Also a few aptitude questions. No need to prepare for them really.

Hope you find this helpful.

Best of luck.

Hi Mr. Prasanna Gadkari..
I went through your whole blog.... really grateful to you to help so many students like me....

I am a NIFT graduate from Fashion and Lifestyle Accessories design background and have a 1 yr work experience with a footwear brand Catwalk(as a designer).

So far been interested in applying for Industrial design(not PD-as u already have cleared d major difference) at IDC. The concern here is a link(Design aptitude test and interview carried out in IIT's and IISc) explaining the sort of questions being faced during the DAT exam for discipline-PD which has definitely scared me, as I am ZERO with even the basics of Engineering. Does it mean that DAT for ID(IDC) will also have questions related to Engineering. Should it be that I change my mind & think of applying for some other course? I fear even if I clear my Ceed exam I might get stuck up in DAT for that matter.

However, the 2nd option I may opt for is VC(Visual Communication).... met a few students at IDC,Bombay dis time b4 coming back to Delhi(as I have quit d job now for preparation)..... got even convinced with the kind of work that goes on in Animation....

please help?????
somewhere I am losing the track..... clarity is what I require..... whom do u think I should speck to for the same while your suggestion is of utmost importance too........

Thank you again for being so supportive....on behalf f all....

Hello Prasanna,

I really appreciate your blog and read it very often. It helped me a lot in CEED 2012. As the results are on 20th Jan, 2012. It is still 3 days to go. But please clear the selection process, because the link you have given in your 2nd comment from the top on this page, doesn't go anywhere. Moreover, what if a student shortlisted in CEED results wants to apply to multiple disciplines in same IIT (e.g. ID and MD at IIT-B)?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Anand,
I am happy that the blog helped you with CEED.

And thanks for pointing out the dead link. Unfortunately Blogger does not allow me to edit it now. Maybe i will update it in the post.

If a student applies for two courses in an institute, he/she will have to undergo the same DAT, since DAT is generally common for all courses. There is a good chance that he maybe asked his/her preferred course during interviews and judged accordingly. So essentially the rest of the process remains the same.

Best of luck

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

If you scored 56 and the cut-off was at 58 (due to some mistake, as i understand), means that you are not eligible. Secondly, did you appear for NID entrance exam?
Best of luck

Anand Sangani said...

Hey Prasanna,

Do you know why the IDC people take very less students every year? I referred their website and the number of students were 10-12 per branch on an average. The seats of each branch are actually 50 na?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Anand,
I dont know exactly why IDC has only 10-12 seats per course, but as i know IDC on whole has about 50 seats distributed among the courses it offers. I guess it is as per the norms of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt of India

Sabarinivas said...

Hi prasanna,
I hvnt applied for NID,YA right,my problem is that while writing i belongs to OBC NCL,But at the time of result i general.
actually it seems tat they had made me general quotta student without informing me...then abt NID,wen the xam ll held,if so shall I try for the next yr?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Sabarinivas,
I am not keeping a track about when NID exam will be held. You wil have to keep an eye on concerned website. CEED score is valid for 2 years, so if you score better next year and with your correct allocated quota (hopefully they wont make the same mistake next year), you can improve chances of getting admission to IITs

CEED is an entrance exam for gaining admission to MDes course at IITs and IISc. You can read what all is all about at the respective websites. here is IISc MDes page (my Alma maters)

"Teacup" is filled with awesome insights. Thank you for that!!

I am a Mechanical Engineer, a 2011 passout.Have a few queries:
1. Want to know about the career path of a product designer?
2. Do we have to be to be a great artist to get into this field(Am a guy with inclination towards inventions and mechanisms)?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Mitty,
“"Teacup" is filled with awesome insights” is really an awesome quote! Thanks for that!
Essentially a product designer solves a problem though inventing something manufacturable. There is some difference between product design and industrial design. You can read about it here Now, looking at this definition a person with purely artistic talents is more suitable for industrial design. Therefore, I believe that you will make a perfect product designer if your inclination is towards inventions and mechanisms.
You can tell more about your hobbies too. These tell what you really want to do
Best of luck :)

Hello Abhishek,
Sorry for the late reply. Though I wish to be a full time blogger, I have to give priority to my company work. The maximum delay in my replies is a day.
I don’t think there is much you can prepare for DAT as the pattern varies quite a lot. You can read a few tips here I went through your animation and its worth presenting in the portfolio. I don’t recommend putting anything more than 3 minutes long in portfolio, as you have a limited time during interview and it wont do justice to rest of your work.
Best of luck :)

First of all, I don’t believe that coaching is necessary. IIT-B also agrees with this. You can read about it here
Second, since you have lots of time for preparation I suggest you to start honing your basic skills of sketching, visualization and creative thinking.
This blog contains the relevant material required for your preparation. Also you can post if you have a specific doubt

Although i have read your previous posts..but I think it will be very much beneficial for me and all the bloggers if you post a detailed discussion on how to go through the preparation??? for CEED,DAT and specially the last one portfolio test, Is it depends on the specialization we gonna choose????
Thanksss a lot..

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Indrajit,
I am really happy that the suggestions helped you. I am sure u will make it to the institute you dream about. I also wish to post a discussion on preparation, but everyone has his/her unique way of preparing. For example if your sketching is good and you need to improve your idea generation skills, you might take one week, while someone else might find even a whole month inadequate. I had prepared for CEED in 40 days, I have written a post about how I did it here
There is no portfolio test as such. You can present a portfolio during interviews, and that is completely optional! I have seen ppl without portfolio getting selected!
And the portfolio is a tool to convince the interview panel that you really deserve that seat.
Thanks for asking nice questions :)
Best of luck

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Vishnu,
Maybe you can go through all the admission related links i have written here
The questions are often based on the portfolio and it is tested whether you are suitable for the course you have applied for. There are no HR questions.

You may present your work in print, if that shows your work in most convincing way, otherwise you can borrow someone's laptop, if that's really necessary.

I guess you can wear casuals, but there is a reason why you should wear formals. It shows how seriously you take the interviews and the course. Perhaps you should reconsider your approach is not "casual" :)

Best of luck

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Rahul,
I have written a post on DAT and interview here I suggest you to go though it.
I recommend you to prepare a simple hand-drawn portfolio containing your technical knowledge. Like, if you have a new way of operating a boiler, or some modification to existing engine, etc. This will increase your chances of selection. Besides that, if you really lack an interest in sketching, this course might just completely bore you.

Also i suggest you to see the course contents in order to prepare in a more complete manner

Best of luck

Hi Arpita,
I strongly recommend you to go through the CPDM link here showing the course contents

As it is, you have already read what I have to say about DAT and the interviews on this page. You may wish to carry a simple portfolio containing some of your work to the interview.

If you have anymore specific doubts, plz feel free to ask

Hi,
Thanx a lot for the reply.Since i have a background in aerospace engineering so i wanted to know what exactly do i prepare for the interview..will it be basics from my field or will i have to go through any other stuff?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Arpita,
Actually the questions asked in product design are very simple. They want to see whether you can apply basic engineering while designing the products. For example, how thick should leg of the chair be so that a person can sit on it without breaking :) Or how much will you consider your new bottle design to hold? Or something like that. Also now a days electronics is included in many products, so you can consider brushing up a bit on that. Something as basic as, how much power will your device consume, etc
The aerospace knowledge might help you, but the questions are simple enough for any science student to answer
Best luck

i mean to ask- what are the scopes in future?
and who should choose to do this course?

if u feel, please suggest me other alternatives that i can opt for...

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Sagar,
Master in Design degree (M.Des) scope varies from each institute and the courses it offers. Essentially M.Des holder can approach design aspects from holistic perspective and take care of many aspects of design into consideration. He can thus help a mechanical engineer to develop a system that is not only structurally sound, but also good looking and is comfortable to use. With such a skill set M.Des can address a large variety of problems from systems point of view. He can take care of packaging of components in a small space, maintaining the functionality and look of the product (for M.Des in product design)
M.Des candidate does not always have anything to do with production, since that will be responsibility of the production engineer to take care of. Secondly M.Des requires you to have excellent skill in communicating your ideas, mainly through sketches. Therefore such skill is always tested for anyone who applies for M.Des.
Since you have such an high AIR in PE, I recommend you to apply for IIT-B M.Tech in Manufacturing Engineering
Best of luck

I recommend you to go through the syllabus of both of the institutes, and decide which one suites you the best.
Can you tell me how much experience you have and in what field? Generally candidates who have experience in the course they are applying for, have slightly better chance in getting selected. Like, if a candidate having two years experience in animation studio applies for animation course, he stands a better chance of getting selected.

Hello Sabarinivas,
It is pretty hard to guess, whether or not one can get a call for DAT based on his CEED score. Again, none of the institutes reveal the cut-off scores for DATs. But, what you said is likely, that the aggregate might reduce and you might get a call on same score
Best luck

Hello Sir
It seems you have recently added a logo to your blog, isn't it? A red cup is visible now on my browser, which wasn't earlier...
Sir, I got to know that the iits have a popular and common ques for DAT. They ask to make a 3D product out of a given square sheet of paper and without wasting any. One can use glue, scissors etc. I believe they d't expect us just make toothpaste box or boxy television, do they? well a lot of things can be made in thoughts :P but creating is different. How to approach such tasks?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Chetan,
Nice that you observed that there is a new logo on the blog. Its called Faveicon. Recently I managed to make one and add it :)

The questions about making a 3D structure out of given material can be solved using a simple method. See what the material is, and try to come up with uncommon uses of material itself. For example, you are supplied with some colored paper, you can think about crumpling it and making something interesting. Similarly you can soak it in gum and make small pallets that can be used to make a necklace. You can use it creatively as you like

Enjoy

Chetan Yadav said...

Wow! that was the quickest ever reply :) About the gum you mentioned above, was it papier mache?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Chetan,

Was it papier mache? I will leave it to you what you want to do. I was just proposing an idea.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Bala,
You can read about the selection procedure here
The cut offs vary a lot each year, so its hard to predict. Besides that, even if you were told that cut-off value, you can only attempt to score your best. Why only cut-off, right?
So, i believe, that you need to focus on giving your best shot

I am a mech engg student bt intrested in M.Des I have been an engineering drawing (in 11th and 12th) student and a fine art student (4yrs basic n 4 yrs Diploma) too. Till now I hv been a good artist. I m very nervous for my first attempt. Any tips suggestion for how to crack CEED'13? wich book to refer? etc etc

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Bismita,
I feel its natural to be nervous
But you need not worry, all you have to do is practice your solutions well.
I feel there are two basic parts of your solution, the ways in which you think about the solution and the way you sketch it. I feel you must be good at the 2nd part.
If your concepts are creative, you will be able to ace the exam
If you want me to review my work, plz feel free to mail me on gmail or facebook

And, appear for exam just like you are sketching freely in class or for passing time. I observed that exam pressure takes away your creative ability

Best of luck :)

Chetan Yadav said...

Hello sir
I checked all the iits' website but there is no clue of 2013 admission forms or notification. They should have brought it to the notice till now since CEED is over; and they bring out forms much before CEED result(dec 30)??

MIT's form out! i don't feel like appearing for it as i am not sure of their academics and placements? what do you say?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Rohan,
Actually, i did not see the form myself, so its difficult to tell you how to interpret it

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Rohan,
Correct me if i missed the point, but they have given 3 questions in the form: Some question on two wheelers to be launched in India in 2013, some question on why mobility design suits you, proficiency with some skills feel they are referring to this, but again, you are right, its no where mentioned if these are the "Tasks". Apart from this form did you get anything by post or when you paid the fees?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Also, i see that there are "Tasks" given in rest of the forms. This means, you don't have to fill any tasks for this particular course

Hi Prasanna,
I Have secured AIR 128 in CEED 2013. Your Blog has been very informative about the exam.
I am not aware of the number of seats and hence a bit confused of my chances.
I know the modelling and analysis softwares like AUTOCAD, PRO/E , ANSYS and i think i am fine at them. But I have no manual sketches and stuff
I am confused between going for product design aur vehicle design(more inclined towards it)

I request you to please guide me on how to prepare for the further process.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Palash,
If you ranked 128 in CEED, your sketching must be great. That also means that you would have some inclination towards sketching. Modelling softwares wont serve you well in the interviews, unless you use them to express some creative ideas. So i recommend that you can make nice creative products and car models using softwares you know. Those are not substitute for sketching your idea, but i guess, that's better than nothing.

Anonymous said...

Thanks a lot Sir, that helped.
What are the other things apart from these modelling softwares, which i can prepare for the CEED post exam procedure. Should i try my hand on preparing manual sketches? if yes could you suggest me a start???

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Palash,
I feel you must include the sketches as main work, and your CAD work as secondary.
you can start off by either improving the practice work you have done for CEED, or you can solve some simple problems like, say, concept sketches for washing machines. One resource i can recommend you is Sketch-a-day

Anonymous said...

I really dont know how to thank you Sir.
Now I have a clear idea of what i've to do.
Is it necessary to use colours as i am not used to them.
Are there things other than sketches , which i may present??

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Without colors it wont be appropriate
You can see this page to understand what else can go into the portfolio

Thanks a ton Sir for guiding me.
Sorry for bothering you for quite some time though.
THANK YOU !

How many seats are there for mobility and vehicle design in IITB?
Thank You

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Onkar
IITB official has not announced any details, but some coaching classes claim to be around 50 seats. I dont have an exact idea about this year.

Hello Prasanna,
ur blog is realy very helpful.
I am sachindra frm NIT, a b.tech electrical student.
i had given Gate 2013 exam, and expecting to get undr 330 rank, so with this rank could i get admisn in m.des program in iisc or iit?
According to u, which shuld b given more preferanc m.des or m.tech?
and what is future scope n care growth in m.des?
plz do reply me or mail me sachindra.1612@gmail.com
waiting for ur valuable reply. :-):-)

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello sachindra,

Whether you can get admission to IIT or IISc is hard to tell as the cut offs vary greatly each year

I feel that, roughly put, if you have an artistic bend of mind, are good at sketching and willing to do it full day, and like to work with styling, then MDes is a good option

If you enjoy technical details, are good at mathematics and enjoy working with and designing machines, then probably MTech is good option for you.

As with any degree from IITs or IISc, these degrees are best in India and are equally good, but just ensure you dont get caught up with a wrong job!

Best of luck

Hi Prasanna,
Thanx for reply..
In my college, there is "Automotive Styling And Design Conclave",a 3 day programme in next week.
Will it be helpful in the interview of IITB for mobility and vehicle design?
I am interested in the programme but if no use in the future then I should have to think on it because it is for 2500/-

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Onkar,
I am not aware of what is going to be covered in this conclave, or who are delivering the lectures, so its hard to tell. If they are covering something related to automotive design, the trends or methodology and tools, it might be useful in the interview of IITB for mobility and vehicle design
Best of luck :)

Hello Prasanna sir,
Please Guide my way for 2014 ceed exam , because this year I missed the exam due to semesters. I get idea from previous year question paper and I know its not too tough it need only creativity. But your answer help me allot. Add other useful informations and hints for 2014 aspirants that helps for preparation. Any book is available in market for it and how I prepare for DAT ??

Hello Anurag,
Sure will help you with CEED 2014 preparations.
I keep updating the posts regularly so keep an eye. I am not sure if there are any books available in market for CEED. If you find out plz tell us too.
Feel free to tell what problems you are facing.

Hello Prasaana sir,
1 ) How can i start preparing for ceed ?
2 )What skills or points i have to brush for precise in my answers ?
3 ) time period for the validity ceed score card ?
4 )What necessary things i have to keep in mind for the preparation ?
5 )Is there are questions related with respective branchs ( e.g mech, cs, ec)
Hope my questions help others too.
and thnx for your all time great effort with us :)

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Anurag,
1. You can start preparing for CEED by practicing rapid sketching. Think of a simple idea, say a soap dispenser, and sketch it in about 5 minutes. Dont think of how it looks, you will improve upon the looks later, as of now focus on speed.
2. Focus on expressing ideas clearly in all your works using sketches. The sketches themself need not be awesome. This is the most important thing.
3. CEED score is valid for 2 years
4. you can refer to this post
5. You will have to download previous years papers from IITB site. You can find the link here
Feel free to ask any other questions in the related posts :)
Best of luck!

im from an interior designing background ,
so the engineering questions might be a hurdle for me in the DAT exam...What do i do?
I have no idea what exactly do i have to prepare in the electronics and engineering part so the DAT goes well.!
please answer.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Neha,
The questions that are appearing in the DAT over years have shown that, they are not so tough. Most of them have been covered in 12th standard physics. For example, can you find out current in a branch of a circuit? I guess, it was covered prior to engineering, so dont worry too much :)

Unknown said...

Hi prasanna,
your blog has been suppa helpful. Thank u so much. I wanted to ask if u have the ceed'13 questions cuz they arent available on any of the websites. '12 is the last paper thats uploaded.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Maithili ,
You are right. 2013 paper is not out yet. But if you wait for month, it should be out.
Besides, i do remember a few questions, but if i dont tell it to you exactly, it wont be of much help to you anyway :(
You can also ask on "CEED 2014" and "CEED help" group on Facebook. Few of these people have appeared and cleared CEED 2013, so they will help you out better

Hello, i am shruti, i wanted to ask what happens is esign aptitude interview all about? i do not possess a mere idea. I will be appearing in gate 2014 and I want admission in M.Des program, how to get admission in m.des?is gate score the only eligibility? kindly help?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Shruti,
I suggest you go through this post. Hope that it will clear your ideas about selection procedures. In Design Aptitude test, questions which are quite similar, but are more branch specific will be asked. Once you receive CEED score, i can help you prepare well for design aptitude test, so dont worry about it now :)
best of luck!

Hi prasanna

I appeared for IDC interview for interaction design.
Sadly couldn't make through to the top 10 candidates.
Next I am left with iisc, kanpur and guwahati.
I wanted to ask that iisc program is product design based and my portfolio is completely interaction design oriented. Shall I change my portfolio to product design or keep the same?
Your guidance may come handy.

Hey prasanna,
I am Ravi Wankar.I have done Mechanical engineering,I have got a call from IIT Kanpur for M.Des,through GATE'14.Please tell about what to prepare for interview and design aptitude test.I have no idea about the test, yet I have got some hint after reading your blog(Teacup Blog).I wanted to know if they would ask me about technical or general stuff.I did nothing related to sketching. Please Help me with it.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Ravi,
IITK is known to ask some logical and technical questions in their DAT. To get more exposure on these kind of questions, you might want to refer to part - A of CEED papers. They are available for download on IITB site. Besides that, in IITK interviews its a best strategy to present mulch-disciplinary knowledge. For example, your portfolio can contain works of interaction design and product design. Your chances increase if you follow this. Further, you can mail me your portfolio, and i will try my best to discuss an effective strategy on how to present it.
All the best :)

Hii.. I m Bidyut Daudung from assam.I belongs to ST. I completed my B.E in mechanical engineering. My gate score in 2015 is 673, I have got call latter from IISC for DAT. I have interests in designing so i did some software course like catia PRO-E, unigraphics ,mold flow etc. I don't have any idea about DAT. i was never been in any art class.I sketch in only in B.E i.e Engineering drawing.. My question is should I go to IISC for DAT.? please give some suggestion in my email id- b.daudung@gmail.com I shall be very greatfull to you.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Bidyut ,
IISc DAT is not ONLY about sketching. DAT requires a good understanding of engineering and design as well. Since you have a background in mechanical engineering, you must have learnt to draw free body diagrams and understand basics of electrical engineering. Now, you dont need to be awesome at sketching, but you do need ability to express your ideas through sketches. In this short time, i suggest you to practice just sketching everyday objects like phone, washing machines, staplers, etc. to build up on this skill. Then sketch some from your memory.
All the best :)

Unknown said...

thank you sir for reply. i want to know one more thing i m too much weak in spoken English will it give any problem in DAT as well as in interview and in future??

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Bidyut ,
Its difficult to assess this, because it depends on the perception of the faculty. But you need to remember that a designer communicates through sketches, therefore weakness in English should not hamper you

Unknown said...

thanks once again..I was in tension, now its relief , Sir i would like to know about the placement after the completion of the M.Des and what is the average package

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Bidyut,
The placements are pretty good, since you are completing your post graduation in design from topmost institute in india. I dont have clear idea on present package offered by companies. You may get in touch with present students to know more

Hey Prasanna,
This is Mansi here from Mumbai. I've completed a Bachelor's degree in Architecture last year (2014). This year I gave the GATE examination and have recieved a DAT call from IISc for the M.Des course. Since I dont have a engineering background I wanted to know how tough does the engineering portion of the examination get? and I;m worried that this lack could work against me in the test . Also as the DAT is scheduled for the 23rd of this month, could you suggest some book or website where I could brush up the basics of engineering required for the DAT and the interview?

Unknown said...

I'd also like to add that my current portfolio is purely an architecturally based one.. can I show that portfolio in my interview or is it mandatory for me to have a product based portfolio ?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Mansi,
Showing the architectural portfolio wont help you at IISc, because they want to assess whether you have skills needed to undertake this course.
I can solve your doubt better over an email, since it is more subjective in nature.
Can you drop me a mail on the email address appearing in my blogger profile?
All the best :)

Unknown said...

Hey Prasanna!
Thank you for the reply. I've dropped you an email . Thanks!

Hi prasanna'
I'm a medical student and moving to 12th standard. I wanna do product designing.how exactly should I start preparing for it?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello
I wish to help you with this, but i simply dont know what advice to give you over this :(

Chetan Yadav said...

I am simply glad by the enthusiasm of this 'unknown.' He is not in 12th yet but knows about product design; and wants to pursue it as well.
Hi unknown :) Kudos to you! Second kudos to Teacup for taking design awareness to this extent. I'm sure Prasanna sir wouldn't mind me answering your question.
The things to can do is sketch. Practice a lot of sketching since since presenting ideas with sketches is the foundation of design. Second, in the coming July-Aug'16 when you will be in 12th class, fill the entrance forms of UCEED and NID-UG. These two entrances will open doors to pursue B.Des from the reputed design schools of India. All the best.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Thanks a lot Chetan. Its always pleasure to hear from you on this blog :)

temme which books should i buy to improve my aptitude and mathematical skills for CEED exam

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi aakanksha,
If you have seen previous year CEED papers, you will realise that you dont need books to improve your maths skills. What CEED tests is your ability to apply maths concepts you already know. Moreover, the actual level of maths is not more than that taught at 8th standard. Hence I suggest you to focus on improving your aptitude and observational skill by solving puzzles and aptitude books :)

hi prasanna gadkari, what kind of questions will they ask for communication design interview, and tests in iitb?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Abhijath,
Typically the focus is on your portfolio and experience. IITB is known to ask, mainly about color theory, significance of typefaces, and social issues which can be solved using VC design. I would suggest, brush up your knowledge about the same.
All the best :)

Hello sir ,
It is compulsory to talk in English in IIT's interviews??

Unknown said...

Hello sir,Is the pattern of DAT still the same should i prepare questions based on GATE?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Lokesh,
Try your best English there or ask for permission if you can continue in Hindi.
I have not heard anyone getting interviewed in Hindi, so cant say for sure.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello,
I suggest you go through the other success stories here to get an idea on what is DAT about.
Each IIT has slightly different format of DAT as well, so once you get a call, you can read up that specific success story of DAT. Hope it will help you.

hi i would wan to know the process that happens after clearing the cut off of ceed?
like my category rank is 283 (sc) will i by any chance be able to apply and get a call.
also i have a strong portfolio for ui/ux and have worked for an year being a ui/ux designer.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Namrata,
Dont worry too much about the cutoff. You should apply to all the IITs you are eligible for and let them decide. Also since you have a strong portfolio ready, you have already eliminated one big obstacle :)

what is the best way to prepare for CEED and what are the notes i should follow ? please do help

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello,
I suggest you to prepare for CEED on your own.
I dont know what notes to use, because CEED does not ask you fixed types of questions.
CEED brochure offers a list of topics they ask from. You can prepare for these topics as you find time.
You can write to me for any doubts you have.
