CEED preparation in 40 days!

This post is based on a question asked by Hari
I started my CEED preparation when I resigned from Force Motors in Nov 2006, and CEED exam was somewhere in Jan 2007 (approx 40 days).

I did not have a fixed timetable, though I had a gross one. I don’t remember how thoroughly I followed it.

Day 1 – day 10    : object sketching only. About 50 objects of everyday use a day on A1 size newsprint paper
Day 11 – day 20 : practice of rapid human figures
Day 21 – day 30 : enhanced idea generation and problem solving techniques. Fully focused on attribute method
Day 31 – last day : studied previous year papers. Solved them over again and again

I guess this is not a universal method, but it did work for me.
I would really appreciate  your feedback and the method you follow

Hey Prassanna,
While sketching everyday objects......what did you pay attention to.......the perspective, proportion and line work i.e making it look as real as possible or you tried to modify the given object to make it look a little better or stylish....

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello,
The sketches that one makes serves some purpose. Either its for fun, for communicating ideas, for showing details or simply to capture your thoughts. Each purpose dictates the style you need to adapt. While sketching for fun. Generally its something silly and there is no thought of perspective or anything. For communicating ideas, its best to pay attention to details and good sketching practices. Your sketch need not be very great piece of art as long as the viewer gets a clear idea of what you are communicating. While preparing for CEED exam, you have set time constraint. Hence you need to sometimes sacrifice quality in order to communicate the idea. The amount of loss of quality can be minimized, if you sketch really well in short time.
While sketching objects of everyday use, first its best to sketch the object as they are. This give a good appreciation of various design elements you can play with later on. Secondly, you can choose to modify the object keeping other constraints like functionality, cost and ergonomics in mind.
So, enjoy sketching :)

Hey dude...
In the questions which needs coloring,do we have to paint it from poster color or crayons..or what else?????please do let me know...
BTW your blog's great....amazing piece of work and help...Thank you

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Neeraj,
The CEED paper is only slightly better than newspaper. I am not very sure if it can take poster color without warping, but if you are more comfortable I suggest you to carry them along and test them first. But I recommend using colored pencils. Faber Castell work better for me for their vibrant colors which are again only slightly better than much cheaper Camlin color pencils. Secondly, I am not sure if you can color elaborately given the time constraints so I had used only hatching technique with the pencils. This technique is illustrated on this page: http://www.ehow.com/how_2097625_draw-crosshatching-hatching.html

Kudos to your blog Prasanna! btw
I just have a question regarding the DAT. Do all the institutes have it? And, how many days will the interview last? Is it a single day interview? Does it have various stages? Will basic aptitude be enough? along with quick sketching skills be sufficient? I'm doing my pre-final B.E. Aeronautics. :)

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Thanks Josh,
As far as I know, most IITs have a DAT. The interview details are decided upon the number of aspirants and also upon the availability of personnel from the panel. I have written some basics of the interview here

thanks for all the info you have provided here ...
what do you suggest to practice problem solving as i normally get stuck with them

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Nawaal,
Problem solving is a basic skill you need to master. It will not only help you with CEED but enhance your creativity. I suggest that you can challenge yourself to solve simple problems like designing a "product" for a specific user group. For example, how will a person without hands open, close and lock a door?
Also i suggest previous CEED papers are a great source if you are specifically preparing for CEED
Take care

hi..im abhilash .iam pursuing computer science and engineering but have deep interest in sketching..is there a good scope in designing after doing computer science and engineering...please guide me...

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello abhilash ,
Your scope after having a degree in design after bachelors in computer science, depends on a large number of factors. Mainly on how well developed your designing skills are, how your presentation skills are, how good is your portfolio, etc. Therefore your cope is defined by what how well you develop your design skills and if you want, you can even blend them with your computer science skills too! maybe a course like interaction design will be an extension of your computer skills
what do you think?

I hve only below avg drawing abilities, bt im very intrstd in it..shud i go 4 d coachng classes, will it work 4 me..? Hw shud i prepare..? Can drawing abilitied be increasd?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Ajith,
If you see the success stories of previous year students, none of them have joined classes. Again, I personally do not know if classes are really needed or not. If you really feel you need guidance, you can join them anyway. Another of my opinion is, CEED is not about sketching at all! It is about expressing your ideas using sketches.
Best of luck :)

ajith said...

Thank u sir..bt still u need to hve the drawing skills r8, ideas alone cant help .

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Yes, this is true. you will need to have sketching skills too! Then, lets think how good your sketching needs to be? Does it have to be photorealistic? I dont think you will have that much time. Can it be just a scribble? No, it cant be a scribble, otherwise your idea wont be understood. Hence, you need to have it at least good enough to communicate your idea clearly and accurately. one of my favorite site is Sketch-a-day. I feel that this level of sketching is sufficient.

HEY Prasanna,
I'm newbie, and i had couple of questions in my mind,
first, NID, Ahemadabad takes CEED score? or do they have a separate exam?
second, avg payscale in design industry.

btw, you're doing a great job helping people around. :)
God bless.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Reema,
Thanks for dropping by
NID does not consider CEED score, you will have to appear for separate examination held by them
Average pay-scale in design industry is hard to tell, mainly because, in most companies it is forbidden to disclose ones salary. But you can rest assured that you will be paid much better than a graduate fresher.
Feel free to ask other questions you have
Best luck :)

Reema said...

@prasanna :
Thanks for the reply,
Can you tell me what exam do i have to appear for NID AHEM. I will appear for CEED too,I just want to attempt both.
And where can i learn about exploded views of objects???
Also about various materials and their moulding techniques etc, which mech people study as manufacturing processes! i was in IT, all i know is how to crash window! :D

btw off topic, your portfolio is great, i loved the hand pencil stand, i once thought of the exact same thing soon after FB was launched, it resembles that "LIKE" thing! also, your link for facebook doesnot work.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

You can find a lots of NID entrance Exam related information on official NID page here

There is an excellent video on sketching exploded views by one of my favorite designer Spencer Nugent here

Hey, thanks for all those nice things u said about my portfolio and "Like" pen stand.

Thanks for pointing out the non-working link

hi
what all software should we put our hands tight on to fully get selected for design course.
i have computer science degree but have shifted to profession which includes traditional art works including sketching painting contemporary and displaying work n various exhibitions etc. Now i want to go for technical field of art, so not only for CEED preparation but in general , which are the software open source preferably that wud be needed to get into designing as career.
Also can we use artist portfolio in designer portfolio , like http://www.ashishart.blogspot.com

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Ashish,
you can read my post related to this here
If you want to go into field of arts, say graphic design, the coice of software skills depends on two factors. First, what kind of art field it is? Like, if you are into ad making, then some vector graphic software might be used. Second, it depends on the industry you are applying for. For example, the company might have licenses only for CorelDraw.
Your portfolio is really good! i am sure, you will get selected to IIT with this. In fact, your skills with watercolors and ability to use them in graphics ( the ganesh-ji graphics) is more suited for NID.
I hope this replies your question
Best of luck :)

-harveen

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Harveen,
Its simple. Think about common attributes. You can read about the post on attibute method here

Meanwhile here is your solution:
1. Color : Both apple and star are white from inside
2. Energy : Both are sources of energy (sun is a star)
3. location: Apple hangs from a tree, star hangs from sky :P
4. Science: Both have helped science. Newton discovered law of gravity because of apple, and man discovered fire because of sun
5. Fate: after left for a sufficient time apple will turn black and star will turn into black hole :)

Enjoy :)

what i wanted to ask is about IISc ... how is their selection process...
I'll b giving GATE too, have done Production Engg...
Is GATE score considered of more weightage than CEED for IISc?
and how is its degree different from the ones offered by IIT...

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Aditya,
Thank you :)
GATE score and CEED scores are just cut-off for admission to IISc. They might take, say 500 of each of the top applicants for both GATE and CEED. More people appear for GATE, so the cut offs seem to go a bit higher for GATE. Thats why you seem to have felt that GATE has more weightage.
best luck :)

can u give me any idea how many seat does IITB hav in automobile design?
my first target is automobile design and product design is second choice

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Shwetank,

In IIT-B Mobility Design, every year since 2010 there have been about 8 to 10 seats. This year the number might vary.In IISc Product Design has about 25

I feel that knowledge of perspective is not so much imp for CEED. its good to have, but if u draw everything in perspective and get it wrong, you might lose marks unnecessarily

You can always drop me a mail. Sorry, if i might have missed on your last one

Best of luck!

hi prassana is it necessary to learn human figure..
i face problem in drawing hand and fingure pose.. i can draw rest of human body nicely...

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Shwetank,
When you sketch a product how do you tell how big or how small it is? Suppose you have sketched a mobile phone for elderly, how do you think can you show how big the buttons are? Either you can tell the height in inches, or you can show its scale with respect to some known entity. The best way, in my opinion is to show the scale by showing a human hand or a figure using it. This is why it is important to sketch human figures. If you have trouble sketching full hand, i suggest you at least to sketch an outline, that is also called 'silhouette'.

hi.. ceed is now over. i done all section properly but i have doubt in 50 marks question visual communicaton question..was it necessary to draw . dosage each time() individually, and then represent it in 40*160 mm box or just we have to draw a final sketch on 40 mm *160 mm box

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Shwetank,
I believe that if you would draw a final sketch directly on 40 x 160 mm box, it will be too tiny, therefore it would have been wise to draw each one individually. Again, it depends on the question and space they have provided. I just gave my opinion assuming that lots of space is provided and the question was like the one you have asked.
Hope you do well in CEED :)

Unknown said...

the same thing happened. to me.. as always didn't take control on my nerves..did everything right but made that mistake , drawn a direct final sketch in 40*160 mm
performing a blunder mistake in 50 marks question had ruined my chance

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Shwetank,
Its very simple to start for NID studio test. You will need to gain some degree of exposure to model making in clay, paper and wire. For this, buy a sheet of cartridge paper, a pack of plasticine (any kind will do, though play-doh is best) and a 22 gauge Aluminum wire. Tell hardware store you want it to hang clothes. And a nose plier to bend the wire. Then start making random objects like mouse, cell phones, guns, etc. If you want help, i can guide you
Best of luck :)

hi prasanna i couldn't make it this time for ceed.. iam also trying gate, may be i could get a chance in iisc. i want to ask u dat whether it is worth waiting an year and attempt ceed next time.??

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Ajith,
I appreciate your idea of appearing for GATE and use it for getting into IISc. IITK and IIITDM also consider GATE score for MDes courses.

Is it really worth waiting for an year and go for second try? I feel its totally worth it. Now that you have gained some experience and have practiced well, you will score better next time. Again, i hope this does not clash with rest of your priorities like job, family life, etc. Afterall, you will need to give preference to these things over waiting an year

Hope you think about it

Best of luck

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Ajith,
You definitely can get into automotive design with a degree in product design. I know this, because i began my career in an automotive company called Force Motors (then, Bajaj Tempo) and many of my MDes friends from IISc got placed into General Motors, John Deere and Mahindra!
Thats a good option
Thanks for all the praise :)

Maybe you didn't get an interview call because your CEED score was too low. Weather is it worth leaving your job for full time preparation of CEED or not is good question. You will need to consider following things wheather or not to quit the job:
1. What liabilities you have? is you family dependent on the money you earn?
2. What are the guarantees that you might score well this time?
3. If you dont make it this time what back-up do you have?
4. What is your reason for appearing for CEED? Is it possible to find a design job in your own company without needing a formal MDes degree?
You need to ask these questions to yourself in order to take a good decision

Dear Sanjay,
CEED exam does not allow use of instruments. So you will have to practice freehand sketching. You can go through the last years papers on IITB site. For practicing sketching using freehand a nice book called "Drawing made easy" is available. You will find the link to same in the "resources" section/

Hi friends,
Recently I had gone through "Seeds for CEED" book by Bhushan Patil. The book can of course be a starting guide for beginners who are not familiar with CEED. But for those who know little or more about the exam may actually doesn't need any preparation materials as told by Mr. Prasanna. However I suppose reading design blogs, following designers in social networks like PINTEREST, G+, DRIBBLE, TUMBLR may help learn about the creative people and their works which may boost your performance in CEED.
Thanks Prasanna for your blog works.
Anyway if users need the above book. you can get that from flipkart or

Hi prassana,
i need to know exactly where to start from the prep for ceed examination.i am in the final year of my engineering course and aspire for the industrial design course.
where should i start the prep?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Neeraj,
To begin CEED preparation:
1. Download the previous papers from IITB site.
2.Try solving them, without keeping anything for option. Also keep in mind, that you will get roughly 2 minutes per mark. That is, suppose the question is of 15 marks, you may consider finishing it in half an hour. This is not a strict rule, but it will ensure that you finish the paper in time.
3. Solving the papers will make you understand where you lack. Then you can work on these area to improve your skills.
This way, you wont waste time practicing skills in which you are already strong.

[eg- Masters from NIFT, I feel may not give that value addition]. Whats the scope through CEED? Confused. Could be great if you could throw some light on opportunities. I will be taking 2014 exam. Thank you in advance for your help.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Rupali,
After completing your MDes from IITs or IISc, you will definitely be placed in the best design companies in India. If you dont want to work in a firm you can always start your own studio :)
Since you already have a B.Des, you will even get a special consideration as you have design background already! Further, i am sure that it will be great if you want to launch your design career abroad, IITs are the perfect platform to get your network to proper people :)
I hope this answers your question
All the best!

cant find CEED 2013 question paper, any idea where i can get it from?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Rupali,

Thats a good idea. You need contacts and exp before you start your own biz.

Besides sketching there are many finer points. For example, you need to be good at developing story boards. A question usually appears on it. To understand all such skills, you will need to solve old ceed papers to get an idea where you lack and what all skills you need to pick up.

I will help you makeing a nice portfolio for NID. Dont worry :)

NIFT is a great institute. But i suggest on going through the course contents and the degrees before applying for NIFT. It depends on your tastes. Somehow fashion never motivated me :P

There is no centralized admission for MDes courses. You will need to keep an eye on when the forms will be out, when are the deadlines and stuff. I normally post on this blog when the forms are out, but i cant guarantee :(

Actually CEED 2013 paper was up on IITB site. here but looks like they have taken it down :(

Hi Sikha,
Thanks for all the praise. Hey if you solve any practice papers or make any sketches you can always drop them to my gmail address pg2005.pg@gmail.com
I can give you my evaluation of that and probably guide you in the area you lack :)

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Rohit,
I guess, you need to practice a bit of sketching from simple lines, circles, then proceed to making cubes cylinder and then combine these into simple objects like pencil sharpener, hair dryer, etc.
Since you are an NIFTian, you might have learnt basics of sketching in your first year, how about refreshing that? :)

For CEED you dont need a really awesome sketching... all you need is express your ideas in sketches

Also, in 'resources' section, you will find a cheap but awesome book called 'drawing made easy'. it has all the basics you need :)

Hi Prasanna
I am reading your blog since i came to know about CEED,You are doing a great job.I need your help ,I am confused whether i should go for coaching or just do self practice for his exam.I am engineering(C.S) student, quite good at sketching.I can send you my sketches.Shall i go for coaching or just prepare myself?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Anjali,
Nice to know you have been reading the blog for a while :)
If you go through the success stories, none of the people have joined the classes. But classes do share some useful info, you would be able to meet fellow candidates, and share tips and tricks. This all comes at a cost. If you have enough time, and money to spare, or just need confidence boosting, classes would do more good than bad :)

Unknown said...

what criteria i should keep in mind while choosing a proper coaching institute.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Anjali,
I dont have much criteria in my mind, but it would help if you know what background the teacher holds, how much are they charging and also the popularity. The more number of student means lesser attention to individual, but more peer review.

I simply would say any coaching class would work. And people have made to IDC and other IITs without one. Self study is sufficient too, if you feel likewise :)

By the way, i can help you with your prep. As a begining, send me CEED 2011 Q1 to my email, pg2005.pg@gmail.com

Enjoy :)

Hi prasanna
I am preparing for ceed but I don't know how and what to study to get through from PART - A.
It would be very helpful if you could tell me some tips and tricks for that.

Thanks
Prateek

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Prateek,
I have put down some of my thoughts here
Apart from this, I suggest you to go though part A of 2012 and 2013 papers and make your own lists of topics for you to study. I hope this will cover more than 80 percent of the topics :)

Hi,
I am Prasenjit ... I am a CS engineer.. I want to know while story-boarding do I need to do detail sketching or just the idea is to be conveyed? And if u kindly give me a link for practicing human and animal proportions... ur blog is very gud and I am an avid follower...

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

hello Prasenjit ,
When attempting the storyboard, ideally you should detail it out, buut for the lack of time, you need not detail it to a great extent. the extent is decided by how fast you are sketching and how much details you want to show. As an exmple, you need not shade every leaf on the tree, but you can show leaves by outline. In storyboard its often needed to convey emotions through facial expression, so you may need to study facial expressions.
You can look under "resources" section of this blog. There is a wonderful, and inexpensive book by Narvekar. you can buy that book. uts easily available in most major book stores. it teaches human proportions quite nicely
Best of luck

Hi prasanna..i am an architecture student..I frequently follow your blog..and I must say its great. I am appearing for CEED this year. Apart from CEED, can you recommend any other exams that i should appear

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Kunmun,
I recommend you to appear for GATE too, as GATE score is considered valid cut off score for IITK and IISc
All the best :)

sir plzz clear out that, final ranking of CEED exam(result) is on the basis of only the numbers got in Part B or the total of both parts..

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Deepak,
If you visit this page of IITB, they have clearely mentioned in point 1.b, that "Only Part B score will be used for CEED 2014 merit list."
Hope this clarifies the matters :)

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello mrinaal,
CEED is about conveying ideas through sketches. I feel that instead of sketching everyday objects, try sketching objects out of imagination. If you really need assistance, you can initially take reference of pictures or real objects, but practice to break this dependency.

About quilling. I feel quilling is more of an art-form. If you can convey some new design, say use quilling to make an innovative lampshade, quilling itself wont have much value in the portfolio

You can email me with your sketches so i can guide you better :)

Sir...I am Lekshmi. I am preparing for CEED 2015 and NID. My sketching is not that bad. I am so worried about CEED part A. Do I need to prepare quants so much? What kind of questions are asked from Indian geography? Please help me.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hey lekshmi,
If your sketching is good, you can use it to express your ideas using it. Further, you can make your ideas creative to get even more advantage. In my experience, direct geography questions are not really asked in Part A. But they have asked about dresses and arts in different parts of India. Though a quick look through NCERT geography book, which is available free in PDF format, might help you :)

Hi Prasanna!
I'm Aravind, a B.Tech. graduate in Aeronautical Engg. I'm writing CEED this year to take up an M.Tech. course but unable to decide as to which department / course to choose. I'm interested in Product design and I've also learnt CATIA and ANSYS for the same, where as Photography and Video editing are my hobbies. What do you suggest that I choose?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Aru,
CEED score is applicable only for MDes course and wont get you a seat in MTech course. Since you are already writing CEED, you can apply to MDes courses and there your skills in CATIA and ANSYS will be useful in Product Design. This will especially help you at IISc MDes course
All the best :)

Hello Sir,
Sir my drawing skills are ok ok. But i can draw things if i have a reference to them, drawing from imagination is a different thing. I am not good at it. How do i improve this?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Sakshi,
If you can sketch from reference, you have build half of your skills, now just extend the objects to your imagination. For example, with reference in front of you, you have sketched a coffee mug, now using your imagination, sketch a coaster for it, or sketch a spout for it. Doing so, in steps, you will soon find yourself sketching purely using imagination :)
All the best!

sir i know softwares like catia ansys solidworks should i join m design.i have grt interest in them.but i m not good at sketching

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi suraj ,
Its nice that you know CAD software, but sketching is essential skill for designer. I feel that its not very difficult to learn sketching with regular practice. There are numerous videos on Youtube for you to learn from.
I am sure you will learn to sketch decently well
All the best :)

Unknown said...

sir whats the best place i can go for masters in designing using cad

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Suraj,
I feel that CAD is only a tool. You can go in animation design and make 3D models using CAD, similarly some interesting posters can be designed using CAD in Visual communication course, likewise, body-in-white module in some CAD packages can be used for mobility and vehicle design. Therefore, I suggest you to exploer where you passion is and select that course, rather than going by the tools you are good at :)

hello I am ashika and I am a UI/UX design aspirant as I was very late to decide upon my career choice after B.Tech in cse I couldn't apply for CEED and NID hence the only hope left for me is to get into the UX post graduate course at MIT ID, as I am not a design student I need help with the resources to prepare for the basic design aptitude test and it would be great if somebody could also guide me with the specialization section in User Experience and the portfolio.........ill be waiting for a response

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Ashika,
Since portfolio is subjective to the designer's skill, i can guide you better over emails. Please email me, so that we can work out a portfolio that will suite your skillset :)
All the best

Manish Kumar said...

Hi Prasanna, you mentioned that you used to practice 50 daily objects and humanoid, so if you can point out some online resourse or vedios which can provide stuffs on task basis, that would really be helpful,
Thanks.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Manish,
I suggest you to buy a book called "Drawing made easy" by Subodh Narvekar. It contains all the basics you need for sketching. If you want, there are wonderful sketching videos by Scott Robertson and Spencer Nugent on YouTube. Just search these names and you would know :)

hello sir ,i didn't qualify in ceed 2016 part A because i prepared like previous qus paper its like logo, texture, some puzzle but i saw that paper there is nothing related,i am mechanical engineer 2015 pass out , so could you please guide me what stream is best for me product design or interaction design?and how to prepare for part A for new pattern its like reading comprehension

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Rakesh,
For preparing for such questions, perhaps a good understanding of English language will help. Though, if you see, these questions form only about 8 marks. Therefore, if you focus on other questions which are based on observation skills like counting the faces or the maths based questions, you can surely qualify for CEED. Again, it will be helpful to keep reading and solving questions available on various websites online puzzles.com and this website would be useful.

Dont decide on branch right now. During your prep for CEED, you will automatically know which branch you are interested in. Though, Interaction Design is gaining better scope than product design now a days.

All the best

Hi Prasanna,
Thanks a lot for all the guidance in the blog.I have a question:

I have NID 2018 M.Des part A score of 47.5.In part B, my answers for questions are unconventional but are not drawn well / not communicated well.
I have applied for Interaction Design.
What might be my chances of clearing NID DAT prelims ? (General merit category)

The reason for asking this question is to gather enough information so that I can decide if I should spend time on making NID portfolio now or spend time in studying for CEED and GATE. (i'm afraid there might not be enough time after GATE to make NID portfolio in case i clear DAT prelims)

- Lakshmi

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Laxmi,
Thanks for dropping by.
Your aptitude score looks decent enough. Anyone above 40 has a good chance for getting to next round.

Hence I think you should make a portfolio. In worse scenario, you can use the portfolio to showcase your design skills for landing a job in design field. Portfolio never gets wasted.

Besides this forum, i suggest you ask this to other experts in ceed and NID preparation group on Facebook.

All the best.

Hi,
I just wanted to know if attempting a question from, say visual communication, can we get into college for interaction design?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi goldy,
Thats completely acceptable. You can always explain that in exam this solution occurred much faster to you. Also, you can sketch solution to the interaction design question and show them so that they would know your thinking in this as well.
