How to prepare for CEED Part - A

New pattern of CEED has two parts.
As described in IIT-B official website

The examination will be conducted in two Parts, A and B. All candidates must answer both Parts.

PART-A is a screening test of multiple choice questions, which will be conducted by an online computerized program, and only candidates who secure a minimum cut-off mark qualify to be evaluated for Part B.  There will be negative marking for Part A.
PART-B will be evaluated only for candidates who will be short-listed in PART-A.
Part B score only will be used for merit list and qualified list for CEED 2013.

The main challenge is preparing for Part – A. For preparing for Part – B, you can refer to my earlier post on how to prepare for CEED.

Here are some tips based on experience of several people and study of questions that appeared in previous years CEED papers

1. Study various concepts in arts: There are several question based on shadows of object. So, you need to observe how objects cast shadows under different conditions. Similarly, a study of textures, human and animal forms, use of classical drawing media like poster and oil colors is highly recommended.

2. Understand design in Indian context. You not only need to be a good designer, but a good Indian designer. This means you will have o study and understand how design is carried out in India. For example, recently we have a new symbol for rupee, or iPhone launch. Such news and updates can be easily accessed from newspaper.

3. Study various fonts. You will see many different fonts and writing styles everywhere around you. And even in CEED paper. You need to understand some basic things about them. I found this site to be pretty good source for this

4. Refresh your knowledge of Indian geography and people. We are said to have unity in diversity. This means that no single product or poster will be understood by everyone in India. So you will have to understand your audience for the same. For this study, it is highly recommended to go though NCERT books. You can freely download them from this site

5. Solve some puzzles. CEED Part – A tests various aptitude questions. They are similar to ones asked in CAT. Any good book on CAT will do a good job. Also it is recommended to solve puzzles that involve some pictures. This can be what will be color on bottom face of a given dice.

6. Practice sketching. You might wonder that Part – A does not have any questions related to sketching, then why do you need to practice it? Practice it, so that your visualization will improve and you will understand the world around you.

These tips will help you in preparation of Part – A. Please feel free to write your queries in comments.

It is like designing subject, these will be more help ful for mechanical students, the main subject for mechanical students is caad, it is 3d view . the designs and pictures will be viewed in 3d views and 4d views. i had read this blog, it is more informative. web design bangalore

Hello,
I do not completely agree with the fact that the design subjects are more useful for mechanical engineering students. Using CAD softwares, actually reduces your ability to visualize. It is like using calculators weakens you ability to carry-out mental arithmetic. From my observation, non-mechanical students actually perform better than others, because they are not biased by isometric and orthographic views

hi prasanna....m a regular reader of yr blog...thanks for the wonderful effort...can u tell me some links about the puzzles section....that invloves pictures and the other paper folding types puzzles or count the no. of faces...these are just few examples...i have a hard time with the puzzles....

Hello Shivani,

Thanks for all the nice things you said :)

There are several different kinds of visial puzzles. Like, you rightly pointed out, there are folding and cutting, number of faces, etc. For solving each kind of puzzles the strategies are different. I recommend you to visit a good book store and get a book of this kind. Some books i recommend are

Ultimate In Mental Ability Test - Lt. Col. M. G. Diwan
Mental Ability - R.S. Agarwal
Competition Success - Intelligent Test - W. N. Dandekar

I am not completely sure if these can be just bought locally. They are commonly available in my home town, Pune. You can check out equivalent books

Enjoy :)

Sir, i am also preparing for CEED and have some queries about it:
1. After qualifying the CEED can we apply for all the courses if we fulfill the criteria or there is a limit for that?
2. After how many days after the declaration of CEED results the Studio test n interview takes place?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Himanshu,

You can apply to all the courses in all the institutes of your choice, if you are eligible. There is no centralized procedure of admission so you need to keep your eyes open for application forms

You will get about a couple of months after the result to prepare a good portfolio for interviews and test

Hello Shivani,
You can mail me your answers to pg2005.pg@gmail.com
We can discuss over them
What you think?

Mandrila said...

Hey Prasanna, This list of tips is really helpful. Kudos for the effort you have applied. I have one very lame question for you. Is is advisable to use water-based colors for Part B? Do you have any idea about the paper quality provided/will be provided, for this section?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Mandrila,

Thanks for the praise :D

The CEED exam is printed on a paper which is comparable to newspaper, only a bit thicker. Using any kind of water based color, including sketch pens, causes it to warp and absorb colors. Therefore, plz don not use water colors. If you just cant manage without it, i suggest you to use Faber Castell water color soluble color pencils. It gives a good effect, though not exactly like water colors.

Best luck :)

sir i wnat to ask you abt 2012 ceed ques .there was a question in B part, tht list 5 factors for corruption and in b describe them with help of sketch.if i write delaying of justice or accustition of goods by greedy people. then should i have to show a court scene or a baniya sitting on wheat heap in its reply, same case with health drink logo.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Parul,
I feel your solution is nice. You can think about 5 solutions, like, a cartoonish hungry man and then a baniya enjoying sitting on a wheat heap. You can mail this solution to me, if you want me to evaluate your sketching
Best of luck :)

Hello Sir,
I am preparing for CEED-2013. I am a B.Tech CSE student. Firstly, thanks a tonne for your blog. It is awesome! :D

I want to study Interaction Design in the future. And my main concern is even if i do clear the CEED, i dont know wat to put on my portfolio. As in, should i start building it right now? If yes, how? Things are a bit hazy for me at the moment as i cannot find any good mentor for myself here in Chennai. I am not being able to START in the real sense.

Kindly help me out.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Dear Sanket,
As of now, you can practice sketching objects and human figures, so that it will help you in clearing CEED. For this, a student with some understanding of sketching can improve it in a few months with daily practice.
I feel, you need not focus on your portfolio right away. But dont forget to keep a design diary to make notes of nice ideas that come to you. Finally, you will get plenty of time after CEED to make a good portfolio.
I can advice you more upon this that time
Best of luck with sketching :)

Hello Prasanna,
I gave Ceed for the first this year and kind of in a hurry and less preparation. I had no idea that only Part B will be considered for the scoring and I am bad/terrible at sketching.

I scored 29 in that in SC category. But I am eligible to apply for the Institute. There were questions in the admission form and tasks too which I believe will be considered for the admission. I have a good portfolio and believe my work says a lot more than the score.

Is only the CEED score a major foreplay for the second round.? If so, why did the institute ask for the tasks/portfolios and they could have just called the candidates rank wise only.
And this pattern was not followed last year.

Portfolio Link:

Thanks,
Regards,
Shatabdi.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Shatabdi. ,

Thanks for dropping by

CEED score is considered only for screening, i.e. for selecting the candidate with sufficient design aptitude, and then you will be tested whether you are suitable for the course.

Though the institutes never revealed how exactly is the contribution of CEED and interview scores, my opinion is that CEED score does not matter once you have received the interview call.

The practice of calling students rank-wise is there for MTech course, where interviews are often not carried out, but design admission requires more than just CEED score. I feel this is justified considering CEED scoring system is somehow based on judgement of the person checking the papers.

I really liked your portfolio, and in my opinion you will make it through the selection process

Best of luck :)

Hello Sir, I completed my graduation in Electronics and Telecomm Field this year and now i am planning to appear for CEED 2014, I just want to ask you whether the knowledge which i acquired in my dicipline in previous 4 years will be helpful in my post graduation in Design..?? If yes in what ways?? Being an Electronics and Telecomm Engg. which specialization topic should i select in Mdes and what kind of work do i have to face in future?? According to me M.des looks more lucrative for Mechanical and Computer Engineers.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Aditya,
Many products now a have electronics built into them. This is one way your background can help you. Also if you apply to NID for course like new media design, it will definitely be of great advantage, being a bachelor in EnTc. Again there are courses, like mechatronics, during your MDes where you can explore possibilities of your knowledge much creatively. Finally, I think, being a designer, its not important that what branch you come from. Its ultimately your ability to think and design. In this respect, both mechanical engineer and an electronics engineer solve some problem by using their knowledge, and this is really what being a MDes is all about.

Unknown said...

Hello sir, thanks a lot for that information , it was very handy.
Can you just tell me how is the cutoff scenario in the NID media design course??
I guess a lot of marks would be required for it..!!

Unknown said...

I scanned the website of NID media design and found three of the courses useful:
1) New media Design
2) Information And Interface design
3)Design for digital Experience
Are the admissions to this courses given on the basis of CEED score or a seperate entrance exam is there??

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Aditya,
NID has its own entrance exam. It is generally held after CEED. You can keep a watch on their website for details.
I dont have idea about the cut-offs for these exams.

Unknown said...

Hello Sir,
Thank you for that info,
can u just provide me some resources to prepare for that entrance.
previous year papers or so.??
so that i can get a some idea of the paper style.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Aditya,
You can find the previous year paper on IITB site. Just search for them.
I have solved a few problems on the blog in various posts.
Some online resources, not specific to CEED, can be found under "Resources" section of this blog

I am happy to see a blog like this which is helpful to score the information related to CEED, Interest in ART, DESIGN and INNOVATION. I have completed successfully my Graduation in Mechanical Engineering last month(Completed my 8th sem in June 2013). The main aim to pursue Mechanical Engg. was the Drawings and Mathematics rather than Machines. But I couldn't find much drawing related subjects in Mechanical. In the last year(7th sem) of my graduation, I came across "CEED" and felt like WOW. I had a glance over previous year papers and found it interesting in which questions were communicating in the form of visuals. But I was not able to appear and prepare for CEED because of lack of information as well as time during my academics. Now I am planning to continue my studies with visual ideas through these platforms. So my interest to write here something is Basically I am good at CARTOONING and COPY THE DRAWINGS sometimes. Failing to judge myself and my VISUAL SKILL in the race(CEED) of great ideas all over the INDIA and lacking in confidence to concentrate and attempt because of the absence of guidance. I will be waiting for your response to make me aware regarding the Information, Guidance to go through CEED.

Hello Prasanna,

In the fifth point about puzzle - you mention aptitude questions. Does this mean that we need to consider mathematical questions as well - similar to those asked in CAT and other management examination?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Cathy,
The puzzle questions are quite similar to the one asked in exam like CAT, except they are design oriented. To get a proper idea of this, you can download previous years' CEED papers from IITB site. It will really help you to understand on how to prepare for such questions.
All the best

Hello sir,
Your blog is really helpful as whatever I needed to know is cleared to an extent.I just completed my B.Tech from Computer Science, one of my friend told me about CEED as I told him that I'm interested for further studies in the field of graphics and my this decision was made clear when I was doing my final year project as it was related to Image Enhancement, but I'm really confused as there is no guidance and that is why I'm losing my confidence in that. Please help me as how well to prepare to crack through CEED.
Thank You :)

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Shweta,
Thanks for dropping by.
Judging from the name a work in Image Enhancement looks like something that needs some amount of coding. And probably, if you enjoyed it, you might as well stand a better chance appearing for GATE and doing MTech. Should you be interested in sketching, fonts, logos, etc, then graphic design is the right option.
In order to guide you for CEED, I need to assess the level at which you stand now. As a benchmark, can you download CEED 2011 paper paper from IITB site, solve Q 1.1 and mail me your solution? My email is pg2005.pg@gmail.com

hi sir,
m a mechanical engineer, i followed my interest in designing from 2nd year, come out with some good things...but now its been almost 1.5 year to me passed out but couldn't do anything fruitful, last time i had given nid exam in product and transportation but couldn't clear.
i am very much confused regarding one thing which thing to follow and do passionately. i am attracted to designing, i have good capability in cad/cae . but dont know where my interest is taking me....i am very much motivated by the genius Pranav mistry. so want to become like him and more or the less i want to do work for humanity. but till now i had done and can do better work in product designing with my existing skills and knowledge, but smewhere my interest lies in interaction design....now i dont have any skill of programing, embedded etc. but is fascinated to that very much and tries to learn the basic when ever get time.
so the thing is which thing i should give priority....Cpdm in iisc, because my existing skills can be utilized well and i can grow and make good money..... or ixd idc...which is my dream to make such things i have thought for humanity but have no knowledge right now.
i hope i m able to explain my situation, and after reading ur blog, i think u only can sort it out.
thanks :)

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Bhavik,
Looking at your work, it seems you have diversified interests between product design, interaction design and your award winning works are actually in automotive design!

If you actually see these branches closely, you will observe that, automotive design is subset of product design. Interaction design might seem a different trade altogether, but then look at your washing machine. It has a human interface, which needs knowledge of interaction design. Pranav Mistry has done his work in computer interaction but, maybe you could pursue your interest in product interface! You get the best of both worlds :)

Hi Prasanna,

This blog is of a great help. great job.
i am an architect with 3 years of experience. i have always been attracted by the faculty of design. So i want to shift into some hardcore designing area. I have a decent if not great flair at sketching. i love to work with typography. also i have done few professional posters and graphic design along with normal architectural designing problems. I know autocad, 3dstudio max, sketchup, autodesk revit and photoshop. i have very little idea about the product design, or the industrial design programmes. about their teaching programmes in india or even their industrial applicability and placements. I would like to explore the subject of user interface. can you give me a brief idea about all the subjects they teach in the iit's and their placement and which place is generally recommended. also i have an elaborate architectural portfolio, but i guess that would be of no use in the interviews.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Arjun,
Since you are already good at designing software and have a degree in architecture, i am sure you are already well versed with design philosophies. I suggest you to go through the websites of IITs. All of them give an idea about course contents. You can see what all courses interests you. Courses like Finite Element Methods may not be of of best choice for a product designer, but you can choose from a wide variety of subjects as a part of your elective subjects. :)
You have nice sketching skill, but you would have to make a nice portfolio exclusively for your interviews. I recommend first prepare and appear for CEED. After that you will have plenty of time for preparing a good portfolio. I can help you with the later part :)
Best of luck!

Hello,
I feel that you may have the material for your portfolio, but to crack CEED this wont be that much helpful. IF you have not started your preparation yet, you may read this guide.
Since the tome is quite short coaching might be helpful. It may give you additional preparation tip, but thats no substitute for a full time practice. You will still need a lots of practice. You can send your solutions to me if you want. i can review them :)

thanks for ur reply prasanna..
actually i didnt started my preparation yet! i recently came to know all these things..
can u suggest me, what kind of skills i must possess to crack CEED.. (like art,painting..).
i saw few previous test papers. i found some questions like draw a sketch of tshirt design so and so.. actually these kind of things go under fashion designing. but im trying to apply for interaction design! so how can i face such kind of things? is there any alternatives? or i must face them?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

hi Bharat,
In order to obtain admission in the MDes course, you will need to clear CEED, so these kind of questions i feel are not specific to branch, but general design questions. Like any good designer can design a nice tshirt or make shoes appear angry. If you go through the last 2 years papers, there is Part A and Part B. For Part B, you always have an option of not choosing to solve questions you find tough, but it wont really affect where you get admission into. For example, even if you solve question related to visual communication, you might get admission into product design. I cannot specify list of skills needed in ceed to full extent, but anything you do in CEED, one fundamental skill you must have is the ability to sketch out the ideas in your mind in clear in simple way.
Hope this helps :)

sir plz help me i am totally dedicated toward designing section

thank you,

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Shaan
I think, you should start practicing sketching objects from your imagination instead of copying them from real life. this will help you in sketching fast and your ability to attempt to solve product design and VC problems will increase.
You need to focus on Part A and B, because if you just clear Part A it wont really helpyou. Above tips can help you and side by side you also should sketch regularly for sketching rapidly in exam :)

Hi Rohan,
The atmosphere of CEED is very tense (joking!) IIT never delcears the cut off, but if you would come to know that the rank in general catagory was 250 last year, will you just focus on getting rank 250? Besides the cutoffs vary a lot each year. Just give your best shot and apply to institutes of your choice, and pray for the best :)

Hello,
For preparation of CEED, no one book is available. CEED is an exam about design, which has several aspects such as sketching, idea generation, communication and problem solving. It would be nearly impossible to cover all of these in one single book. But there are individual sources of information available regarding each of these. These are covered under 'Resources' section of this blog.
