NID PG Entrance Tips

first thing about NID PG entrance test is, it is fairly similar to CEED. So I advice you to go through preparation tips for CEED. Here are a few additional tips :
1. Practice sketching everyday objects.
2. Think about details in everyday objects. Think and find out what material, a ball pen is made of? Why did the designer choose this material? Why is this pen of such length? What will happen if i make it longer... Or thicker? What defects it has? Can i use, say, glass to make it??
3. Think weird idea! A lots of them. How can i eat a bowl of noodles if all i have is some disposable paper cups? Or i have only a notebook with me, so how can i send a message to  my friend who lives 2 km away? Anything weirder u can come up with? Ninjas, robots and pirates are also allowed!
4. Practice sketching REALLY fast!! I mean just focus on conveying your ideas! Forget the beauty and aesthetic, just get your idea through!! Then you can think about adding details and shading. Time is really short in NID entrance.
5. Plan your sketch. Draw small thumbnails first. Then draw in light hand and then finish with DRY colors! Dry colors like ball pens, pencils, crayons, etc. But don't forget to be FAST!!
6. Be careful what questions to give time and weightage to. Suppose your human sketching is poor, attempt the question last!

Another important difference between CEED and NID PG entrance exam is CEED has slightly more emphasis on engineering questions, while NID entrance focuses on aesthetics and  sense of understanding of how design is carried out. So you need not focus heavily on engineering, but some knowledge will help you understand the design process and design decisions better.

NID entrance test focus to a greater degree on practical aspects of design than that is in CEED, so think about practical things in greater details. Like focus on what you can do with a shape of cup instead of its geometrical dimensions.

Best of luck

Thanks to shivani  for asking a good question.

well thanks prasanna for such a crisp reply. I am interested in interface design programme. Do i still need to focus on object drawing and human figures for the entrance.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Shivani,
Hee hee, will give you more 'human' replies next time :)

If you are interesetsed in Interface Design course, i feel that you should show that in the portfolio. This migh include sketches of humans, but those are in context of interfaces. For example, a woman operating the buttons on a washing machine.
An ideal Interface Design portfolio, in my opinion migh contain the following samples:
1. A couple of web pages, either for clients or for practice
2. Some 'skin' for an application, like maybe an calculator program
3. Interface for an gadget. Maybe a washing machine, or an MP3 player
4. Some kind of game that kids can play. And a study of what they will learn through interactions
5. An innovative application for iPhone, with touch interaction

To clarify the interaction, you might need to use story board showing what happens when, say, a button is pressed or how the application tells user what to do next. In this story board you need to include human figures,

In summery, you will need to practice human sketches as well as object sketches, in addition to graphics. And judge for yourself what is the best way to convey your idea and skills. If you feel, i can review your work too

Best of luck :)

I had a query regarding materials. In case of Plastics I am getting confused where exactly a polycarbonate, polypropylene and polyethylene is used? I exhaustively and extensively googled but I am not getting a proper answer. If you can help, atleast regarding how to go about answering the material questions.
Really need your help.
Have a great day.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello debarati,
I have put some information on this and this post. There are some good links in these posts too.
Generally the usage governs the selection of material. For example, most of the disposable bottle are made of polyethylene, due to its ease of recycling and lightweight (therefore low cost) where as, the non disposable bottles are made of polypropylene for its durability and toughness.
All you need to know is properties and you can easily know their use.

Hello Vivekanand.
I believe that would not make much difference, yet the interview panel might be happy to know you are trying that hard to get into NID, and therefore you must be truly motivated

Hello sir
Don't know what nid is up to? Haven't received the admit card(s)...contacted them, they say they posted last week :(
They gave me reg. nos for the same and told me to reach the centre with those...Such a poor system creating best of designers!

Unknown said...

They ask so many questions in Paper-1 including plans (of railway stations), illustrations, products, costumes,Gk, sequential drawings, etc in just 1.5 hrs.

Do they ONLY check the IDEAS or also sketching?

Is it a good idea to go CRAZY with ideations or is better to stick to ideas which is plausible for questions LIKE invisible ink and inks which produces light for 6 hours, etc..?

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO APPROACH PAPER-1 OF NID?

Thanks in advance.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Chetan
I completely agree with what you said :(
IITs have a better system. Hope NID catches up soon

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi debarati,
I am not the perfect person to answer this question, but based on experience of few people, i understand that better sketching in shorter time will fetch you better score, than poor sketching with a great idea

The best approach to answer NID paper is sketch fairly good at very high speed. Its a real fight against time!

Hi Ravishankar ,
I dont think NID papers are available for download :(

Chetan Yadav said...

You know sir, I feel there's some kind of nexus between the nid and coaching institutes...they never upload papers but the institutes always have them. They seek money in return. Also to my surprise, when I had been there at main campus for StudioTest, it was like all the surrounding trees at the main gate decorated with the posters of a popular coaching institute and not only this...even the streets which led to nid had every lamp post with a huge banner...No one can help with the streets but the trees were theirs, in their own premises. I certainly can't digest that they would not have noticed it. Don't they have control over a person standing right in front of their gate and distributing pamphlets of some institute?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Chetan,
I feel, it might not be a tie-in, but more of negligence on behalf of the caretakers at NID. Or maybe the advitezers must have put the posters up there, and since the staff was on holiday, no one was there to stop them!
But i feel this is pretty bad...
Dont worry, i know plenty of people who made it through without relying on classes, so can you :)
All the best

Hi Sujal,
In my opinon, looking at the kind of questions asked in the sample test and at the syllabus, studying General Aptitude Test questions would help. Though this is the first time for UCEED, i am not really very sure, still your aptitude studies will help you in solving design questions as well

I am interested in Interaction Design, should i sketch the applications on paper or present it in as a software material? like photoshop

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Krishna,
IIT interview panels loves to see variety in portfolio. This shows your skills to use various material. Therefore, i suggest to make your portfolio using different mediums like hand sketching, photoshop, even using dedicated interaction design softwares if you want. Finally, you can present it on your laptop or take a printout and show it. Anything is fine as long as you are presenting using your best medium.

Hey,,
What should be first step for M.Des in Product design?
Where to focus first Sketch or concept?
Thanks in advance

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi,
The first step for MDes is to appear for CEED for MDes from IIT or IISc, or to appear for NID entrance test if you wish to gain admission to NID.

nidhinid said...

Hahaha..
But i mentioned in terms of sketch or concept.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi,
In terms of sketching, I suggest you to find a problem you may be facing everyday, like, the chair you sit on is not comfortable or maybe you feel that that the TV remote has too many buttons. Next, try to think how you can solve this problem. You will have more than one concept, so sketch all of them. You may find that some concepts are better than the others, so you should pick that up and sketch it to as detail as possible. You can follow this approach both for the portfolio and for NID entrance exam, except in the entrance exam, the problem will be given to you.
Hope i was able to satisfy your query :)
All the best!

Hello Sir,
My queries are:

1. Do we have to do the sketching during the NID exam only using pencils? Can we use colour pens, ball pens, etc.??

2. Is there any negative marking for GK type questions? How many questions are asked which do not require drawing??

3. On what basis are the candidates selected for the next test? How are the answers judged and compared relative to other candidates??

Waiting for your reply! :)

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Diksha,

Here are the answers to your queries:

1. You can use any other media like ball pens and sketch pens for NID, but the only problem is that you cannot erase the work done with ut, so if a better solution occurs to you or you feel that something more needs to be added/removed, then you wont have a chance to alter your solution. So use these "non-erasable" media at your risk

2. For CEED the Part A is GK type, which has abour 40 questions and which can be solved within an hour, for NID it varies each year, but again there are about 10 to 40 questions based on GK.

3. For CEED paper, the judging criteria in mentioned in the questions. It is said that the solution is given weightage on basis of creativity of the solution, sketching skills, ability to identify the needs of users clearly, types of materials you have used and quality of presentation (not only good sketching, but way you choose the views and how you label it as well)

Hope i was able to answer your queries satisfactorily

All the best :)

Hello again Sir,

I've applied for two disciplines for NID - 2016:
1. Animation & Film Design
2. Graphics Design

My queries:

1. Should I be worried about preparing my portfolio from now itself or should I start after the results are announced ?

2. I'm good at human anatomy(sketching) but I've never done any 3-D animation using any software. Can animated flip books, whiteboard animations, stop motion animations and other traditional animation methods be a part of the portfolio?

3. What is 3-D modelling during the studio tests ? Do I have to learn any 3-D modelling software for that purpose ?

Waiting for your reply. :D

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Diksha,

1. As you know NID DAT is on 10th Jan 2016, and the inteviews are scheduled somewhere in mid-March, therefore I feel that right now focus only on DAT and once DAT is over, focus on making a portfolio for interviews. One month is enough to prepare a good portfolio

2. That would definitely help while preparing for the portfolio. The more the variety in your portfolio, the better are your chances for selection

3. You dont have to learn the 3D modeling software as long as you feel there is enough variety and content in your portfolio. We will have a detailed discussion on this tpic after NID DAT

All the best :)

Hi sir
I am preparing for NID PG.
Can you tell me how do I divide my practice and study time between basic general knowledge questions v/s designing?
and one more question sir.. do different streams of nid have different nid question papers ?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Kiran,
The NID DAT paper is same for all disciplines. Once a candidate is selected for stage 2, then the Studio Test paper is branch specific.
I suggest you to split your time 50-50 between GK and sketching. This is assuming that you are not weak in any of the two. If you are weak in say, GK, then give more time to it.
All the best

Unknown said...

Hi Sir,
I have been preparing for both CEED & NID, but have not yet decided about which stream to choose. Now I have to give a discipline choice while filling the NID form, but I can't decide. I have done my B.Tech(IT) and at the same time I am quite good at sketching & communication. Can U pls help me choose?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Attreyee,
I suggest you to go through the course content of each course and see which one you like.
If you are good at sketching and communication perhaps graphic design or animation mighr be the course for you
Now a days, Interaction design is hot and you will get assured placement in a well paying company, so you can consider that as well
and of course, there are allied branches such as new media design and universal design, if you want to learn something off the beaten track. Have look at portfolios of the people from these courses as well, and you will know where to apply :)

The Stupid Genius said...

Hello sir, I have opted for information design and new media design. As one can only fill in two branches, isn't opting for branches with lesser number of candidates better?

The Stupid Genius said...

Also, what will be the cut-off for NID?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi,
I dont agree with the point that applying for less popular branch increases the chances of selection. This is because, even for the less popular branches, it is likely that the applicant would come up with amazing portfolios. And if more than 15 such candidates apply for 15 available seats, then the competition is same as that for popular branches. Anyway, since nothing is know about the competition, it is our duty to showcase our best portfolio irrespective of the branch:)
All the best

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Its quite difficult to tell the cutoff for NID and especially more so after they have changed the pattern to 70 marks objective questions!

Unknown said...

How can I improve my preparation for NID as the pattern has changed now ? Which topics to cover?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi, A safe bet is that prepare similar to Part A of CEED for objective questions. If you go through the old CEED papers you will know what kinds of questions are asked. That way you will have proper direction to prepare

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Ravi,
Photographic design deals with solving problems through use of photgraphic media. It is a part of visual communication, except it uses camera, photographs and print media to express solutions.
Let me knoe if you have further doubt :)

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi,
For NID DAT preps just make sure that you practice some reading comprehension, some visual and spatial ability questions plus some aptitude of the kind that was asked in CEED. It will help you to sketch really fast and think about creative ideas to everyday problems. During the exam read the questions carefully, read the choices as well, use method of elimination where applicable and be fast :)

Hi manthan,
I suggest you to carry artist's pencils (Staedtler Mars Lumograph are the best), color pencils (I prefer Faber Castell, but any other pencils are fine) and materials like eraser, sharpener, etc. Apart from this, you can carry whatever you need for sketching, but i suggest you to avoid carrying any 'wet' media such as poster colors or oil colors since the answer paper is not quite suitable for that.

The tips are available in the post above
