You don't need a MDes degree to realize your passion in design!

Ignore warning

Dear friends,

Can you picture this… 3215 people fighting for 200 seats? This is what CEED is!

Clearing CEED does not entitle admission to IITs. There are few more rounds to shatter dreams of many! Does this mean that lives of 19800 people are crushed every year? At least not be one of them and lets think smartly on what you can do if this option is closed.

Don’t let the design degree be a bottle neck for achieving your dreams

What you can do if you cant do MDes? (without wasting an year in 2nd attempt)
1. Did you apply for NID? NID is different league in itself. It cant be compared to IITs, because both are the top institutes in India!
2. Other institutes in India : There are many other design institutes in India. Like there is MIT, DYPDC, Shristi Design School, etc. Of course they are not IITs, but if you want to do MDes that badly, you can think about this!
3. Apply abroad: Not all schools abroad put a hole in the pocket! Some institutes like Jönköping University  have a really good course content, especially in Industrial Design, with relatively low fees and even a chance to get a waiver!. Some universities dont even have tution fees! (e.g. University of Lapland, Finland) Also course in Europe often have degrees in Arts, which are useful for those with artistic bend of mind.
4. Apply for short/sponsored course: Many institutes offer course for working professionals. Some of these course are really worth it! You will get an opportunity to network with likeminded individuals, or simply make new friends. Why wait? You can find some info about the ones conducted by IIT-B. Maybe someone might even sponsor you looking at your work!
5. Apply for internship: Cant make it to any masters’ course? Don’t worry, you don’t always require a master degree to kick start your design career! Start small. Build on your experience. A good exposure can be start with an internship.
6. Apply for a job: There are just too many design firms out there who are looking for fresh talent!
7. Freelance: Not all designers bind themselves to job. If you like the freedom of work and interacting with clients, you can choose to freelance! This will build up a very good portfolio and like many freelancers, you will have your own studio.
8. Just create something cool : You have a passion for design right? Then whats stopping you from making something cool and blogging about it? Someone might notice it, or they wont! You will have your share of passionate fun.

For NID Product Design, they ask lot of question on
materials, processes, finishing. It would be great if you can kindly link some resources on the net where information regarding the above can be available.
Thank You.

hey 64 is clearing for general category
but i got 63.5
just .5 marks
i couldn't clear part A
bad luck for me

Unknown said...

Just a small foolishness that i already admitted after I finished my exam.. done.. all the section very well. its really frustating

66k said...

hey prassana I've small clarification
please solve it and correct me if I'm wrong
and its for all readers of this blog

I'd attended 42 questions
as per rules correct ans = 2marks & for wrong ans = -.5marks

>if i get 35 right answers and 7 wrong answers the total would be (70-3.5=66.5)
so this is ruled out for my score

>if i get 34 right answers and 8 wrong answers the total would be (68-4=64)
so this is ruled out for my score

>if i get 33 right answers and 9 wrong answers the total would be (66-4.5=61.5)
so this is ruled out for my score

so what is the possibility of getting "63.5" as the total score out of 100 for attending 42 questions?

i mean how many right ans & how many wrong ans

please help me out with this confusion
or is there any other criteria evaluating the part A

AIR 52! All thanks to you :)

TRIVIKRAM said...

hello 66k,
i guess ur calculations are perfectly rit...in that case i think u didnt answer 42 questions...u cud've marked some for review and forget to mark the option later on...for eg,in the 42 questions u attempted,u wud've got 33 correct answers,5 wrong ones and 4 unanswered(but marked for review) = (66-2.5) =63.5....!!

Hello Swati,
There are numerous universities abroad. Those in Europe are specially a bit less expensive.
I feel you must look at this page to know which is the best place to apply among top 100 :)
Best of luck

Prassana sir, can you please give me info about internship in designing in India

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Rahul.
There is nothing specific i can tell you about. You will have to just approach the company and people in your contact and ask about it. They might ask you to show your work samples, so keep it ready too.

hello sir,
i qualified partB of CEED.. i wish to apply for two courses in iitb ie. interaction nd product design ..
plz help me with d application form.. as they hve given us to complete 3 tasks.. i dont knw hw to go abt task B.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Mrinmayi ,
Actually i have not seen the form myself, so its kind of hard to interpret what they are looking for. Sorry :(

Unknown said...

hi prasanna
i'm applying for product design and i'm confused with these two questions in the form plz help
1.Task (B): Select three different examples (for discipline of design you have applied for) from India which you consider to be particularly good or bad.Write critical comments on each example (within 150 words for each example).Illustrate the examples in freehand using any medium (pencil, pen, poster colours, etc.) on sheets of A4 size.
2.What are your professional and research interests?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi james bond,
Just pick a product of indian origin (say, Babool toohpaste, a sweeping broom or Khaitan fan) and write what you consider good or bad and sketch them
In second question, write what you would like to do after this course, what you wish to investigate, what you wish to learn, etc

Unknown said...

hello Sir..
actually i had d same doubt as the one mentioned above.. ie
Task (B): Select three different examples (for discipline of design you have applied for) from India which you consider to be particularly good or bad.Write critical comments on each example (within 150 words for each example).Illustrate the examples in freehand using any medium (pencil, pen, poster colours, etc.) on sheets of A4 size.

i just wanted to knw what examples shud i include if m applying for interaction and/or visual communication design..

Unknown said...

and sorry for not specifying the task B question earlier... :(

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Mrinmayi ,
For interaction design, how about including one Indian website (say IRCTC website), one Indian product interface (say, some washing machine) and ATM machine interface? I think that will look good, right?
Let me know your thoughts

Josh Mathews said...

iisc forms out on the first week of february

Unknown said...

hi sir,
thanku so much... actually even i was thinking of taking up some website.. i was considering "india post" website.. and as far as other two examples are concerned.. as u said.. i'l take some product interface...
i was also thinking of indian logos/branding.. bt m not sure if i shud include it in interaction design.. i guess it must be under visual communication.. right??
wht do u think?

Unknown said...

also der is this task c ie
Include three examples of the works done by you as part of your portfolio (for discipline of design you have
applied for). They could be sketches, artworks, photographs, storyboards, etc. shown or photo copied on A4
size sheets.

so for this can i include object drawings(done in pencil) or say landscapes(done in poster colors) ??
i like clicking pictures.. so i hve some photograghs as well..

ur views??

Unknown said...

thanks very much for your constant help

Barat said...

hello sir.. i wrote CEED, got 47 in part-B but did't qualify because 52 is qualifying mark for general category.. so i'm planning to do design somewhere out. so can u tell me about DSK international school of design?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Mrinmayi,

I agree, you should include logos/branding under visual communication and not under interaction design.

For the task C, i feel, you can include the sketches compiled into one single sheet and include the photographs similarly arranged into another A4 sheet. I am assuming that there is no restriction on the number of sheets you can send. Otherwise, you can compile the sketches and photographs on one single sheet in an interesting manner.
If you want me to review your work, plz feel free to send it on my gmail address given in my profile.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Baratwaj.
I am really sorry, but i have no idea about DSK ISD :(

Unknown said...

hi sir.. i will certainly mail u my work...
thanku so much..

its ok sir, i heard M.S.Ramaiyah school of advanced studies, Bangalore, has a M.Sc program on Automotive product design. is it worth studying in there? or can u suggest some colleges in India for automobile designing.?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Baratwaj,
I have only seen the course contents. It looks nice course from its website, but i dont know how good the institute is. here is a list of institutes that could help you

Unknown said...

Hi, Prasanna plz tell everyone that check their CEED 2013 result once again because ceed exam panel reduced qualifing marks by 2 marks bt no change in AIR.
Don't knw how it's possible bt this will make smile on ur face( who just missed to qualify )

Hi Vivekanand,
I was looking to confirm this, but apparently there is no official source that states this, so I cannot substantiate this at the moment. Though, you can help people by posting this on CEED 2013 group on facebook

Unknown said...

ok

Mandrila said...

Yes, they did reduce the cut-off by 2 marks for General and OBC and by 1 mark for SC. However, I dont think it would affect anyone's rank; only a few more people would be qualified.

Unknown said...

Hi Mandrila from where did you get this information ? Is it related to Part A or Part B? thank you
i have got 62 in Part A in GC and the cut off is still showing 64.

I just compared the two score sheets that I had saved, one from 26th December and the other from 9th Jan. This is only for Part B. Part A cut-offs have not changed. What shows in your current score card, is the latest cut-off.

Mandrila said...

Has anyone completed the tasks?

Hi Mandrila,
If you are on Facebook, you can join the CEED 2013 group to get better response :)

Hi Prasanna,

I was unable to clear CEED this year. While looking out for similar courses on the web, i came across an institute called National Institute of Creative Communication (http://www.niccindia.org/)
It is located in Bangalore. Would you be having any idea on how good this institute is ?

And i must say! This Blog is sooo good! I really appreciate you taking time off to reply to all our queries so promptly!

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Sampradha.
I went through the link of the institute you sent, but honestly, i could not make up my opinion about it. Neither do i know anyone from this institute to find out more in detail.

Hi Rohan,
The cutoffs vary a lot each year, though a safe bet is score at least 40 marks
Still, i suggest, knowing cutoff wont help much, just give your best shot :)

Hello sir,
What is the scope for Automotive digital designing or digital modelling.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi ROSHAN ,
As you know that under Modi's make-in-India initiative lots of automotive jobs are cropping up. So my guess is that there will soon be a lot of scope for both digital design and modelling in automotive sector as well as other industries.
