As the saying goes "beginning is always the hardest". That is why we decided to write this post.
To begin CEED preparation:
1. Download the old papers from IITB site.
2.Try solving them, without keeping anything for option. Also keep in mind, that you will get roughly 2 minutes per mark. That is, suppose the question is of 15 marks, you may consider finishing it in half an hour. This is not a strict rule, but it will ensure that you finish the paper in time.
3.Make a note of places where you are facing problems or are not able to solve in time
Solving the papers will make you understand where you lack. Then you can work on these area to improve your skills.
This way, you wont waste time practicing skills in which you are already strong.
Hope this method works for you :)

Sir i am very confused about the ceed exam.....
1. If i select in the ceed this year after that what is the possibility to getting admission in any institute???
2. How much scholarship i will get from respective institute for during M.Des. ???
3. How many number of students are appearing this year approximately???
Hello UPTU WORLD,
1. Chances of selection are approximately (number of seats)/(number of candidates appearing) = (200)/(4000) = 5%
2. MDes candidates are entitiled for Rs. 8000 from Ministry of Human Resource Dev,.
3. About 4000 candidates will appear :)
Hello Richa,
I feel that if you have completed your graduation, your maths is strong enough to clear the simple problems that come in CEED. Still if you want to practice, good CAT books like R S Agarawal, are more than enough :)
Thanks sir!!!
Sir kindly answer these question too-
1. After cracking CEED 2014, what is the chance to getting admission in M.Des. in any IIT/IISc?
2. What is the chance for getting admission in IIT Delhi??
3.What is the chance for getting admission in IIT Bombay??
4. What would be the total fee of M.Des. in any IIT?IISc. (including all fees like hostel, mess, exam fee, etc.)
5. Kindly suggest some E Book/ link/ website/ pdf for the preparation of part A of CEED 2014.
6. As i am EE student, not much good in drawing, so kindly suggest me some trick/guideline so that by doing handwork i can creak this and if possible kindly send me some E Book/ link/ website/ pdf too on my Email Id: aamrendrapal@gmail.com or my facebook account www.facebook.com/palamrendra
Hi Prasanna, I had a query for the questions where one has to identify the problems in a scene like railway station, bus stop, canteen etc and give solutions with sketches.
In these type of questions, should one sketch each idea separately or one should sketch the whole scene in totality and then mark their additions/edits mentioned in each point?
Which one is the preferred way of answering this type of question?
Thanks,
hi sir, i already posted the comment but i didnt got the reply, sir my question is for product and communication design, how to answer this questions, plz help me by guiding
thank you
Hi UPTU WORLD,
1., 2.,3. ITs hard to tell, becuase it depdends on number of applicants and the cutoffs
4. you need to check the IIT websites for this
5. i havent found any such links. if you come across let me know
hi Koustuv.
If you have gone through the previous years paper, you will see indivisual areas in answer sheet assigned for each idea, so you need to answer each idea seperately and not in a single object.
Besides this, its a good idea, to draw the background objects in faint and your idea/add-on in darker tone. This will communicate your idea of improvement in a better way
All the best :)
hi Zeeshan,
I dont see the comment here
Can you please email it to me?
sir how many question i have to attempt of part A for qualifying part B???
In part B there are three question for optional type i.e. visual communication, product designing, animation designing (2013). If i want to study industrial designing which part i have to do??
And if i attempt animation designing in the ceed after that can i get admission in visual communication ??? kindly clarify this point ???
Hi UPTU WORLD,
Its hard to tell what will be qualifying score for Part A, since it depends on number of students who appear and how difficult the paper is. But i suggest attempt as many as possible and attempt only if you are sure of the answer
For Part B, its alright to attempt questions of the branch you are not applying to. In the interviews you can always explain that you found that question simpler. Besides, it shows your multidisciplinary knowledge
All the best :)
Hello, Long time :) Exam is on the horizon and I'm not excited at all :(
OMG! new profile photo :D
Good change!
Hi Chetan,
Its been so long!! Hey, where have you been?
I thought you were married by now :D
I cut my hair short, so a new pic :P
Its good you are not excited, you will solve your paper calmly and peacefully :)
Best of luck!!
Haha Ha That was a good joke :)
Hi prasanna,.. cud u plz let me knw whether there is negative marking for unattemted questions in ''part A'' of CEED? so that in case, i hv no clue abut a question asked..., would it be better to leave it unanswered ?..than getting a negative marking fr a wrong answer?
hi Poonam,
If you attempt the question correctly, you will get +2 marks,
If you attempt it incorrect, you will lose -0.5 marks,
and if you dont attempt it you neither lose nor gain any marks!
All the best for tomorrow :)
Thanks a lot.
Paper was cool, found PartA easier than that of last time..but had some questions which were completely luck dependent...i made sure not to make ANY guesses in those. And question like A4 sheet size was- free ke marks, i once studied it but had forgotten at the exam time...had brain open at the time so took my ruler out and measured the admit card. There was another ques of golden ratio with a square and adjoining rectangle to it as the figure, i applied brain here as well, took the ruler out again and measured the sides of square and rectangle right on the monitor...ehehe...square had 2.5*2.5 while rect. had 1.5*2.5, calculated 2.5/(2.5+1.5); =app 1.6 And got the answer. I did this last yr as well which had ratio of wide screen, then i had measured the dimensions of the monitor i had :p
PartB; Ques1-sketch a man opening a fridge OR sketch a scooter with a man standing next to it. Ques2- write a description of club house scene, pic was given. Ques3- 3uses of umbrella apart from conventional use of protection against rain and sun. Optional1-design website interface for a movie complex. Optional2-comic strip, which needed min 20 frames (who has time to sketch 20 frames that too when scene was to show a crowded railway platform). Optional3- problem and solution regarding street drains etc...The only problem was...i found the PartB a little lengthy, don't know about others. For me, it was so lengthy that i didn't have time to color anything :( But no still life sketching question was a treat, i just can't sketch a plate and stuff on it, hehe
what will happen if I have attempted the answer of part b on the sheet but not marked on the computer that I have answered...
Hi Nisha,
Even if you have not marked your Part B question on the online system, it will be evaluated, to the best of my knowledge. This is because, its physical copy is present and it will be forwarded to the concerned examiner. So dont worry :)
hey thanks! Your comment made me feel better..
I was worried cause the computer says I answered only 2 out of three questions under the mandatory section....of Part B
Conputers say the darnest things :P
Sir, I want to crack CEED 2014, I haven't started preparing yet, is it still possible? :O my sketching skills are ok ok, not outstanding.. please guide me..also what is the total marks of part A and part B?
Plz help me in preparation for ceed.how to start n which portion
Hi Pooja,
Really sorry that i missed out your post :(
Hope you are doing well. If you are still thinking about CEED, plz email me.
Thanks
Hi Jawahar
Like the post says, just start solving CEED papers. You will get an idea on how to proceed and what all you find difficult. Then you can improve on that aspect. To start the preparation, just start with Q1 of 2011 paper, as it is the easiest.
All the best!
Thanks a lot...
I am not very good in drawing
Will you please suggest me
How can I crack ceed
I am good in visualisation , imagination and creative skill and in logical reasoning
Hello neharika,
You know you may not be bad at drawing but perhaps bad at expressing ideas through sketching. This is what is tested in CEED. Since i need to personally see your sketching and other skills, can you drop me a mail on pg2005.pg@gmail.com
Ok I'll drop you a mail
Till the time can you tell me any book or any other material I can use to improve my preperation on ceed I have to clear ceed 2015 at any cost .. :-P
Hello neharika,
If learning sketching is your only obstacle, then "Drawing made easy" by Subodh Narvaker is a must study book! It has awesome sketching techniques which are easy and quite applicable for CEED. You can easily buy this book in all major book stores :)
Ok prasana thanks and please tell me where can I prepare for Part a as without clearing it part b will be useless :-/
And I am pretty sure if you will keep helping me like this through my preperation which I just started for 2015 I am gonna make it to IISC :-)
Hi neharika,
I also hope you make it to IISc :)
For Part A, here is a simple strategy: Go through the Part A questions of old paper and then make a list of topics that the questions are asked from. Once you have this list, you can study to as much depth as you want :)
This approach should clear almost 80 percent of the CEED Part A paper. More than whats needed!
Can you give me your email I'd ?
its pg2005.pg@gmail.com
The book helps :-)
Hi,
can you please mail that book to me....PLease
Hello sir,can you please tell me whether Mechatronics engineering students can write the CEED exam
Hi Avi,
I dont have the book in soft format. Besides "Drawing made easy" is quite popular book and is available in all major book stores all over the country :)
Hello Rajat,
As the CEED eligibility criteria goes, since you have BTech degree, you can surely appear for CEED :)
I am a student of design studying in Pearl Academy, New Delhi.I am studying communication designing (BA HONS) with advertising and graphics issued by Nottingham Trent University (UK).4 year course including one foundation year.I wanted to know whether I am eligible for an MA in automobile/transportation designing or communication designing after i complete my graduation from idc or other iits?
Hello Sukanta,
I am pretty sure you fulfil eligibility criteria laid down by IITB as laid down here as per the point 4 listed there. But since i am not the authority of this matter i recommend you to speak with the IITB administration about the matter.
All the best :)
Hi,
I have started a blog www.debaratirakshit.blogspot.in
I am setting up myself with new challenges and DIY (Do-It-Yourself) projects.
The whole idea is to be engaged in something creative continiously; be it writing (yes, you can include that too in your portfolio), painting, doodling, photography or any other kind of comple creative projects. Beacuse trying to solve questions everyday become monotonous. It is a more natural way of letting our creative juices get their exercise (and a strong step towards building our skills and portfolio).
We can also collaborate in different projects.
Not: Don't say you do not have time. I work in a Big 4 Consulting Firm. Its about our priorities.
Lets get started! :D

Hey....
I am a graduate from NIFT in accessory designing and will be taking the CEED test this tym. Kindly help. I am jz nt abl to understand what to prepare and how to prepare. I am more worried about the part A. Awaiting reply.....
Hello tanya,
In order to prepare for Part A, you will need to make a list of topics that have appeared in the Part A of past CEED papers. If you wish, you can write me an email and i can send you some of the practice material i have compiled
All the best :)
Hello! I just started my preparation for CEED..i dont know how to proceed with it.I'm an engineering graduate. Are there any books that I can study from apart from the previous years' papers?Or any classes that I can join in Mumbai that you may have heard of?
Thanks a lot!:)
Hi,
CEED is best approached through self-study in my opinion, therefore i always recommend solving old question papers and get it reviewed through some expert, like those available on 'CEED 2015' Facebook group. Yet i know, classes works for some people. I am not in a position to comment on the CEED classes in Mumbai because i have not attended them. So i feel, its a good idea to catch hold of someone who can give you a first hand account of his experience :)
All the best :)
How many students will be appear for CEED-15?
Hello Pranjali,
Based on the number of students appearing for past CEED exam, i estimate about 6000 students to appear this year
HI Prasanna,
I graduated engineering in '12...Have been working in IT industry since..
I have decided to go for designing course but as of now I lack in knowledge about what kind of previous exposures are asked for getting admissions.
Because I never been involved in any kind of documented activities that would showcase a creative designing like skills. So it would be a great help in which fields I have to polish up myself or practice apart from preparing for exam.
Thanks in advance....
Hi Sourav,
When you are preparing for CEED, you will be making a lots of sketches, solving previous years papers and even some creative ideas will come to you. You should save all your good sketches and ideas for your interview. Also, after CEED you will have about 3 months to make a nice portfolio, in which you can prepare and showcase your creative works.
hi sir
can i get your email id

Hi Ankit,
I also dont have study material, but i can review your solutions, if you send them to me
Hello Sir, I have some doubt regarding the part A of question paper. What are we suppose to prepare for it? They cover a wide range of questions in part a.
And one more thing there is hardly 40-45 days left, is there any chance i can still clear the exam if I start preparing now? given that i won't be able to give my entire time to ceed alone because i am preparing for some other competitive exams.
(P.S.- I am still gonna try my best in these last 40 days, but it's always good to hear someone saying, Yes you can do it. )
Hi Sakshi.
For Part A, you will need to study the questions covered in previous years papers and make a lit of topics. Then you shold simply study these topics. This technique helped many people clear Part A. To what depth to study is up to you, but CEED normally asks questions realted with design, so you can ignore the non design parts of the topic. Further, you can as well mail me so i can send you the notes we compiled for Part A. All the best :)
from where i find the solutions of CEED exam
Hi Mudit,
Solution of Part A of CEED paper can be found on IITB site itself, whereas, for Part B there is no fixed solution. It depends on person to person and even on the person who is evaluating it. The best way to understand where you can improve is to post your solution on Facebook groups like CEED 2016 and asking for assessment. IT will give you a fairly decent idea about where to improve :)
Hello sir, I am kritika mathur .Just completed my B.arch degree.I had been preparibg for gate the last
year but I failed to apply for ceed .I am really excited to do my masters in design because i don't want to limit my creativity and sketching skills. At the same time, even when I have a good thought process, I couldn't bring it down on paper.I have also gone through the last years question papers. Although I can draw things as I see them . I want to practice for part B thoroughly . should I start with that or part A first cause I feel I lack time now.
Hi kritika,
There is a very simple technique to sketch whats in your mind. First, see an object thoroughly. Study it with as much attention. Then turn away from the object and start sketching it. You will realise that you are sketching the image of object which you have captured in your mind. This would get you in practice of sketching the objects which you have imagined, rather than just copying.
You should do bit of Part A and B both everyday. For example, in the morning you can study sites like core77 and then start your sketching practice. Perhaps you can even get some inspiration from study of these sites!
You can mail me for further queries. I can guide you in detail over mails.
All the best :)
hey.. can you please tell me the minimum score required to clear the section A cutoff?
Hello akansha,
Based on the previous year cutoffs you should focus on scoring above 30 in Part A to be sure to clear :)
Hello Prasanna,
Please guide me about the material of the CEED examination as i am living in noida and i am totally confuse whether i should join any institute or not . Please reply me .
Hello Anu,
To begin with you should have a look at this post: http://teacupblog.blogspot.in/2009/10/preparation-for-getting-into-d-school.html
I have guided a number of students in the past, and none of them needed to join classes, hence, self study is enough for CEED. Each candidate has strengths and weaknesses, so they should use them to best of her/his abilities :) I can guide you better if you email me.
All the best
Coming from an engineering background how to build a portfolio ? any official guidelines or format . Also any good souces to study history and arch based mcqs ?
Thanks in advance :)
Hi Prasanna.... I had been an avid reader of your blog somewhere around 2012 2013. However did not pursue design post my engineering. Would I have to leave my job to prepare for CEED and other design exams or can I continue with my job?
Hi Prasanna.... I had been an avid reader of your blog somewhere around 2012 2013. However did not pursue design post my engineering. Would I have to leave my job to prepare for CEED and other design exams or can I continue with my job?
Hello pushpita,
It is not necessary to leave your job to prepare for CEED. If you can spare about 1 or 2 hours daily, and a bit more on weekends, its enough to master the skills needed for CEED.
What are the skills needed for CEED?
1. For Part A: Aptitude and visualization ability.
2. For Part B: Ability to come up with creative solutions,
3. Ability to express these solutions through sketches
You can prepare for this easily in said time. Further, I have observed that optimum time for CEED preps is about 3 months, if you spend rest of the time from June onwards preparing 1 hour a day. You can begin preparation in October, and finish by the time of CEED.
If you want you can email me as well :)
hello,
i am a little confused and now underestimating myself for the exam after reading the blog. please dont take me in wrong way but this is something more than what i had thought about the exam. there are exactly 118 days remaining for the exam and i want to know that with exctly what should i start... already started with aptitude. ssketching is something a difficult part i suppose and what would you advice. i am a working professional and find not much time for prepartion..
Hello Pinaki,
Apologies for making you write your comment twice.
Sketching is not really as difficult as you might think. In CEED you don't require beautiful sketches, but your sketches should explain whats on your mind and how your design works. So these are basic explanatory sketches. Further, its simple to study for these. First, think about a simple problem, say, 'I need to place my toothbrush in a glass where it might topple over and get dirty'. Now think about the concepts that might solve your problem. For ex, a hole in toothbrush to hang from the wall. Now sketch this. Simple?
Spending an hour a day is just what you need, plus more on weekends.
Practice everyday! Further, for Part A, the aptitude questions dominate the paper. You can buy visual or qualitative aptitude books to prepare for these.
Hope this helps you.
All the best!
thankyou very much for a prompt reply. your blog is truely helpful.
