How to prepare for CEED

-->
Hi,
We all know you rock… u are a techie with a knack for art. You r not satisfied with engineering, since the drawings are not ‘aesthetic’ enough for you. So what you need maybe a design degree that combines the art and technology, something new and innovative. You know that you are born to be a designer. And you need that M.Des degree real bad. But there is a glitch… its called CEED. Is it a glitch after all? Lets simplify the issues. How to prepare for getting into M.Des?
1. See the previous years papers
You need to set up a strategy of what you will face. Good if you have a friend in IDC or NID, who can help you with some old papers. If not, then see here. This site will help you give some last 3 years of paper. Study them well, to know what will be asked.
2. Sketching saves, and is fun too
Good if you can sketch cartoons. CEED requires you to sketch some everyday objects. This should include representing objects as they are, with their material and texture. You need not be too great still life artist, but you should be able to convey through your sketches well.
3. Learn Freehand sketching
Most of the time using instruments is not allowed in CEED. It will help you to learn basics of freehand sketching. The best way is to sit with pencil and paper and try to sketch.
4. Practice with the right equipments
Fortunately for CEED, all you need is pencil and brains. So what pencil do you use? Always try to use 2 grades of pencil: H-grade for rough work, light drawings, etc and B for rapid work and where shading is involved. A wooden pencil works best, but sometimes a 0.7 mm pencil is best kept in reserve. Also, pack a non-dust eraser. Kneadable eraser is the best, but slightly expensive
5. Improve Visualization skills
What you see is what you draw. Sometimes, you have to “see” in your mind. This is visualization. So, first try to get best picture of what you want to sketch in your mind, then think about it, and then put your pencil to the paper. Try this: How would a glass mug filled with water look?
6. Enhance Creativity
It might be helpful to think laterally. For example, list 10 uses of a coin other than currency. And do this within a minute. I hope you get the point.
7. Read daily comic strip
This might sound silly, but comic strips actually are an example of a storyboard. Sometimes questions are asked to represent a storyline, say, how will you make a cup of tea. This will need your sketching skills as well as story-telling ability. So don’t just laugh at jokes in comic strips but see how they have told it, and why they have draw things in the way they appear.
These tips will help you enhance your skills and help you crack the CEED, but ultimately the skill lies within your practice and how well you practice. What is written above is my experience and something else may work for you, so feel free to experiment. Do write to me about your experience.

and which are the colleges preferred for visual communication / interaction design

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

@Suhani N Mehta : For Visual Communication and Interaction design NID and IDC are the best.
As far as classes are concerned i dont know any. Besides that classes are not really necessary, all you can do is practice sketching everyday objects as well as story boards of simple activities... that should be enough.
Thanks for dropping by :)

very nice article prasanna....thanks for that.....I heard that ceed is just qualifying and there are specific tests at the institute....please do write about that and let u know....

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

@Sai
Yes, you have said it right. There are internal tests as well as interviews at most of the institutes. At IISc there is a Design Aptitude Test (DAT) and an interview for who make it through DAT. These internal exams mainly test ur skills. There is no preparation that can get u though these except a requisite skill set and a good understanding of design. All the design schools will do is hone these skills later on.Thanks to ur motivation, I intend to cover it in blog sometime later. Plz do let me know if u want something in detail. Thanks :)

Hey Prasanna
urs stuff was the least confusing and quite straight forward thnx for that..
I am an engineering graduate(in computers and pissed off with IT industry) and going for CEED this year, basically i know i have decent creative ability but lack any theoretical and basic knowledge in design. Can u suggest some website or book or at least some topics that i should cover, like i know colors is something i need to work on.
What else??

Hi, Prasanna,
First of all. Thanks for crystal clear help..

I am not satisfied with my (Automobile) Engineering too...
So, nice meeting you...

Can you spot some light on Softwares?
I want to know if work done with softwares will be considered at the time of Interview? or they still would like to check us on sketches and conventional design skills even after clearing CEED ?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Arya,
Nice to know that there are ppl bored with automotive engineering and I am not the only one :) Anyway, lets ask a basic question here, why do these D-schools put the students through interviews and DAT, is CEED not itself painful enough? Maybe there are certain things that are not tested in CEED. Like, how passionate you are about design or do you have skill set for a specific course. Say, you are applying for Product Design at NID, one skill set might be rendering different solutions to same problem. Hence the interviews are conducted.

Many people ask about beautiful software renderings and other skills. After all these skills do reflect your creativity and visualization capacity, but still in interview you should be able to defend the originality of the concepts and the solution that you have rendered in the software. The same solution may be presented in form of a collection of sketches indicating the development of the concept. So in short, the concept will have more weightage than implementation. Therefore the medium or the software used for rendering will only carry a fractional value.

Hope this helps :)

that is when i came came to know about D schools and design courses and then finally your article.
well i wanna know if i can take up something other than product design (though product design is related to my graduate degree)
i always was intrested in animation too...
could you please help me out here.

Thanks for ur appreciation mEg. Most of the guys I met had similar beginnings. Thats what drives us. The burning desire to do something cooler!! Ur decision is really worth it. I took up Product Design coz thats something that ppl need. I mean, how can u make life easier for a visually impaired person? or how can u make lathes that are fun to use? An i knew product design was the answer!! Animation is a good choice if u r really into it. There are so many animation institutes out there now a days. And its an ever expanding field. I visited Chitrakatha 2009 events at NID. And it was really beautiful. If animation is ur passion then i suggest nothing less than NID. Though D.J. Academy also has a good name.
Best of luck :)

Hi Prasanna,
Firstly, Thanks a lot man! Secondly, I'm doing EEE from BITS,pilani. Final year. I really want to do product design, and i agree with you. It affects people's lives directly. I don't have anything specific to ask..but you know, the exam is in a month, less than that. Just wanted to know, what exactly do they look for in an answer sheet...what should be the mindset..as in, what are the thrust points while giving the paper. Thanks in advance!

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Dear Neeti,

Thanks a lot for dropping by.
You have posed a very interesting question "What exactly do they look for in an answer sheet?".
I am trying to answer to my best possible of my knowledge, yet it is merely an educated guess.

1. Creativity: CEED is all about it! Its not GATE, where you are offered 4 choices. Therefore more creative answer, more you score!! So just think of the possible solutions no one will think of!

2. Clarity:How clearly you articulate an idea. For example, if you want to convey a plane flying in the sky, the best view perhaps will be, the view from the ground!

3. Communication How well you communicate the concept. This directly counts on your ability to sketch! So practice it well.

4. Coherence: While presenting a sequence of events how well is the last frame relevant to the next frame. This directly points to the "read the comic strip" in the post

There you have 4 'C's of CEED :)

Hope that helps.
Best of luck

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Dear himabindu,

What you have just said is very correct. There is a luck factor and a lot is dependent on your ability to apply yourself at the spur of the moment. And yes, three hours is pretty short time!

The luck plays a role for sure, but more you practice the luck seems to grow :P When you have to design a new product, just start with some similar existing product.

For example, if you are asked to design a mixer-grinder, why not begin with a manual grater? Now just try to automate it. Perhaps a slider-crank mechanism will help.

A lot is dependent on your ability to observe everyday objects. These will help you in designing the new ones for sure!

As a summery, sometimes it is best to build upon existing ideas and avoid reinventing the wheel.

Hope this helps :)
Best of luck for your M.Des

Is there any alternative to get into M.DES. in IISc, IITies?

Hello Ganesh,
Today I managed to publish a post that will help you prepare for CEED in a couple of days. http://teacupblog.blogspot.com/2011/01/quick-tips-for-lat-minute-preparation.html

I would strongly suggest against looking for a CEED solve paper. It is highly creative exams with no rights and wrongs. Just go out there and let your creativity run loose. A sloved paper will unnecessarily constrain you.

About alternative to CEED. IISc accepts GATE score too as a screening score.

Hope this helps,
Best of luck :)

Hello Prasanna,
I am from B.E in Computer Science and i aspire to join M.Des in product design at iisc or animation at idc .Your blog is really informative and helped me for my CEED preparation. Now only we have 3 days left for CEED. Can you give any handy tips about time management and sketching in the exam? also i had these doubts--
1)in some questions like " design a multipurpose walking stick for elderly......." should we use scale, colour pencils for sketching the final sketch so that it will look more appealing.
2)in some paper, there were questions on making the blast diagram/section views etc. can we use scale and perspectives to draw them?
3)should we carry instruments like french curves?
4)shouldn't we use eraser when we are doing the final sketch?
thank you in advance once again for your valuable advice

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Dear Ankit,

Thanks for dropping by.
A few quick tips on last minute preparation can be found here
1. For any sketch, it would be best to avoid use of any instruments. This not only shows your poor confidence in free hand sketches but also will spoil your creative judgment. If you cant just manage without it, then go ahead.
2. In my experience, if you must use colours (pencils, ball pens, sketch pens, markers) just be sure you are very good at them. Otherwise, simple varying shading in HB pencil is sufficient to communicate the forms and ideas. If you use colour to add value, like to show the red-and-white of stick, then there is no option here.
3. Feel free to use the eraser. Use of eraser is alright even in final sketches. But remember, erasers spoils the beauty of confident and intuitive line-work.
4. Just as a quick practice try to draw the figures given in here once. You can see what is said. Like in the perspective view, i have over-drawn lines, but that still shows the idea.

Feel free to ask any further doubts.

Best of luck :)

Bagad Baba bole.....!! said...

Hi prasanna.........I really liked your theory of the 4 C's for CEED. This year CEED had a question that wehad to design a cellphone for the elderly. I had a serious dilemma for this, because from my experience,my grandpa is really afraid of handling new technology. So the more the snazzier and jazzier I make the cellphone by introducing sliders and flips and what not,it is going to put him off. So instead of creativity (of course u cannot eliminate it entirely..!!) will Simplicity and functionality carry more weightage in this question??

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Dear Indrajeet,

I really admire your observational skill. This will add much value to your so called 'design thinking'. I completely agree with the point you made. The design a cellphone for the elderly should be very simple and very intuitive. I wont go into the complete design behind this, but as an apporach take any mobile phone and start subtracting features from it, till you reach bare simplicity. Now with whatever you have left, modify it till you feel confident about the design. This is called subtractive designing This too is a creative process and will carry weightage in this question. I really appreciate that there are people who observe things around them

Keep it up. I dont think i need to wish u luck ;)

Bagad Baba bole.....!! said...

Thanks man....You really have done me a hugh favor. i was really beginning to worry whether I had done a right thing or not.....!!!
One more question: is it true that at IISc, You are sort of handicapped if you dont have a GATE score along with your CEED score. Does the institute place more emphasis on the GATE score?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Dear Indrajeet,

IISc does not reveal exactly whether it prefers GATE over CEED, vice-versa or anything else. Though there were many who had appeared for both GATE and CEED in our class (of 2007 - 09) GATE score is considered for IISc and IIT-K design courses. Some just consider GATE as a back up option, though I dont think thats necessary. At IISc your selection is decided based on you score in DAT and interview, while, GATE and/or CEED scores are used just as cut off for applications. Hence my best guess is that, the preference stories are just stories :)

Best of luck

Bagad Baba bole.....!! said...

....I saw your profile.....You had one years worth industrial experience in your kitty....HOw much didit help you...??also did you take a sort of sabbatical for few months for CEED preparation?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Dear Indrajeet,

Its true that i worked for a while in Force Motors R&D before appearing for CEED in 2007. I had taken a two months 'sabbatical' (nice way of putting 'unemployed'). I dont know how much the experience helped in me getting though the selection process, but the knowledge definitely helped me a lot during the course. For example, without the exposure to CATIA I had in Force Motors, our final project was as good as lost!

"Show the detalis of the product thru d combination of exploded diagram and sectional view,so that the construction of d product is clear"
hw cn v solve dis type of questions

Dear karishma,

The question about the sectional and exploded views is covered under subject of Engineering Drafting. This is common subject in most universities who offer courses in Mechanical Engineering. A very good book is "Engineering Drawing" by N.D.Bhatt. Though this book is not meant for CEED, it contains very good illustrations about the sectional views and exploded views.

I would also like to offer some quick tips on sectional view in one of my posts soon.

hi Prasnna,i want to knw abt NID..
can u plz give some info abt dat?
especially the eligibility criteria..coz i've heard that they ask for min. 1 yr xperience in designing field is it true?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Dear karishma,
Many design institutes prefer people with some experience, but this is only because they can present better and have something to show in their portfolio as against a fresher. Yet if you are a fresher, and have created something exceptional, which might be better than other experienced candidates, you stand a better chance. Again, experience is not an eligibility criteria in any of the institutes. Fresher has equal likelihood of getting selected as one with experienced candidate. You may look up more about the information on the institutes about the respective websites.

Take care

Bagad Baba bole.....!! said...

Hey Prasanna,
For an candidate with experience,is it recommended to have something in the portfolio regarding what work you have done previously i.e if for somebody from sales background.....what can he put up in the portfolio regarding his work-ex?
what if he is in a place which is remotely related to design?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Dear Indrajeet,
The purpose of the portfolio is to show the interview panel how good you are for the course you are interviewed for. Sometimes your work may not be related to the design, and yet it shows some really ground breaking ideas. Maybe a code snippet, that optimizes the program. Or a novel method that reduces the production time of a component. Such things that show your thinking.

Hence, you can present examples from your work experience which are not related with design, but add value.

Best of luck.

one basic question here Prasanna... I am planning to appear for the exams next year.. if I begin from scratch (rating myself -1 in drawing skills) and follow the above steps rigorously, will six to seven months be sufficient to get through?

I am sure u can do better than me anytime.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Aanchal,

Its nice to hear you have 6 months of training already. Personally, I feel it is best to train oneself in the skills one is best at, than to opt for some coaching. You may ask assistance to experts for solving some problems, but the real fun is to discover things ourself. For example, you may learn how to sketch by sketching, than by reading the books on sketching. You may study and imitate some works you like for practice, but best to develipoe it on your own.

Hope it helps.

Best of luck :)

surely it will......but what are the key strategies to be kept in mind for cracking ceed......i really wish to do it in first go..... n hv planned to prepare of my own.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Dear aanchal,

Really speaking i never thought about cracking CEED from strategic point of view. Moreover, the above tips are more or less based on my experience. As CEED paper varies greatly each year, its difficult to fix any strategy. You may aim to develop your skills, which will maximize your chances to crack CEED in first attempt. I appeared for CEED during my BTech the first time. Even though i had good score i did not apply anywhere since i had some other constraints.

Best of luck. Do let me know, if you have more questions.

I am mrinal sharma , i did my bachelors in design degree , accessory design from NIFT chennai, 2011. This yr i appeared for ceed but i got rank 716 as i scored 44 out of 100 and my percentile 71.6.
I did my best in this ceed paper , but cld nt clear the cut offs. I am still confused whether the paper is more of design or sketching ..
Anyways i ll b again appering in 2012..plz tell how to go through it.
Thanks & regards..

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi Mrinal,

CEED is about expressing your ideas through visual medium of sketching. You need to be good at communication rather than only sketching or only at generating ideas. The exam itself is pretty unpredictable, so even the best prepared candidates can face difficulties. A better approach will be not to constrain yourself and let the thoughts flow. You may need to practice you sketching skill from the perspective of explaining ideas. Looking at your past achievements, competitions you won and NIFT record, I am sure you can communicate well, but can you do the same using just a pencil and in limited time?

Best of luck :)

P.S. I am glad that you are not giving up like many others :)

HELLO SIR,
i am in 3rd yr of textile design from NIFT,gandhinagar. I want to start my preparation for CEED, from now on. plz, suggest me the study material for the entrance and also elaborate on the scope available after i do my masters in industrial design.
will it be good after a graduation in textiles.?
regards,
sanjana.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hi sanjana,

You are already a student of NIFT, so you must be having a good exposure to design, your sketching skills and knowledge of materials would be above average. All this will definitely help in CEED preparations. You don’t need any special material to start preparing, but perhaps a good amount of practice in expressing yourself through sketches will be really useful. There is plenty of scope for industrial design, as more and more companies explore emerging markets in India. You can go for fashion or lifestyle products, which is in line with your graduation or go for consumer good design, automotive styling, etc if that interests you.

Best of luck

Hi sanjana,
Maybe its not the amount of time, its about consistency. If you practice expressing ideas through sketching everyday for some time, it will be far more effective than trying to do it over 5 -6 hours. Try at least sketching out an idea a day. That should be adequate. See previous CEED papers for getting an idea about what you might need to sketch.

sir,
i tried out questions from iit 2008 sample paper. and i faced difficulty regarding some questions like varieties of uses of egg shape in our everyday objects. i could not completely understand wether we had to design new objects keeoing in mind the original shape or do we need to mention objects that already comprise of the shape. also sir, please mention few books in which i can refer to ceed solved papers .i would like to see the pattern of CEED paper , so plz advice me some books. and i read your prescribed book :-"how to be creative". it was indeed worth reading.

Hi mEg,
You can find some portfolio related tips here and some tips on studio test and interviews here. Also find out the schools that offer the course you are looking for along with the course contents and faculty. It will give you some idea what you will be evaluated on. Products are always welcome to be shown along with your portfolio. Feel free to ask if you need more help.

What would be the radical approach to solve these type of question?

with reference to the designer bird question:-
exploring the design space, bird always have options with trees and they always prefer a shady tree.
secondly they might not look for greater height as they want their young one"s to be safe.
in that case they will always want a place where few birds of their own kind would stay.
at times when the tree branches are divided they probably make their nest in the adjoining area by joining two portions of branches, that would make it pretty strong. buliding nest near to land will be dangerous for them , so they would choose a medium height.
again thanks for your generous ideas.it helped me a lot.!

Hello VYSAKH916,
I also did my BE in mechanical eng. And it’s a bit difficult to begin drawing from scratch without loosening yourself first. You can choose to sketch objects of everyday use like mobile phone, calculator, comb, etc. to improve your sketching. But before that I would suggest you go through some loosening up exercises. I have describes some of these in my post here
Feel free to write to me anytime

Hi Prasanna,
I found your your blog quite informative and resourceful...
Now let me tell you who am I. I never realise since few years back to persue for a profession I enjoy as my natural flare of art, painting n creativity...then back 2 year I came to know about Ceed but I didnot fullfil my qualification eligibility into IDC Mumbai, since at that time with no option I graduated as a BSc Micro student, I joined MSc Bioinformatics,to first fullfil my eligibility to give design test for best colleges, now I am to prepare for these exams, I would appreciate if you guide me with the resources , where to fetch from books or ebooks, prepare portfolios, to gauge my skill and bridge the difference to crack CEED IDC, I am interested for Visual Communication/ Interaction Design / Animation... I would like to work upon grooming my skill to qualify and get admitted to best institutes or colleges for Art & Design.

CCD said...

I am realy not sure how this is going to work... I found these Design Institutes full of students with background of BFA,Architect,Engg. or Design,I am not sure if there is a place anywhere for students like me who are so much inclined to persue their skill but doesnot have the ed-backgroud as mentioned above...Advise!!!
Suggest for me Where and How to begin my preparation to the Best Output...

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello CCD,
That’s very interesting that you have changed your trades to be eligible for CEED. From the list of your requirements, I do not know of any books written for CEED as of date. But you may not need those at all if you regularly practice your sketching and communication. The tips mentioned in this section were found useful by many and may help you in preparation. Secondly, from my limited observations, you really don’t need to have engineering or architecture background for cracking CEED and securing admission to good design schools. All you need is some common knowledge about how things around you are, how they work and how they might be improved.

As a quick survey take 2010 CEED paper. Q1 requires some visualization and sketching skills, Q2 requires some imagination, Q3 asks 5 uses of CD, Q4 asks problems you might face with pressure cooker, Q5 again requires some visualization and sketching skills, Q6 requires some design thinking. None of them ask for any engineering or architecture specific knowledge. So just relax and prepare for CEED

Maybe, not all the people in your trade take a decision like you have taken and hence none of their names appear on the list of candidates.

Best of luck

Hi Prasanna,

You got such a nice flare of writing esp replying so well around diverse people's thought centers...

I also wanted to know how long is the CEED score valid... is it only for a year?
When do specific college, university open their admission forms, like i dont see any application forms available for IDC right now...

On the other hand , as you said there might not be any book for CEED...yet, can you hint me if there are any such reading/ exercise/activity material/media resources which helps me try out and work upon developing, furnishing and sharpening my creative skills, innovative thinking ability and knowledge....in context what CEED and IDC Visual communication/ Animation/ Interation Design focuses on....for eg I learn something about typography as a subject at IDC and found interesting on the part of how letters reveal design, curves, story and meaning to itself...something more than just caligraphy...I would appreciate if I can some references to know more on some titles on visual comm., animation, interactive design....

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Ashwin,
I personally do not know much about the MIT ID School in Pune. There was an article in Sakaal news paper which praises the school and it appears that the skills they develope in students is really one that can fetch you a very good job! Best of luck.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello CCD,
Thanks for your appreciation :)
As said on CEED IIT-B site here the score is valid for two years.
You have asked a very good question. The knowledge of typography or other topics in Visual Communication is not really expected while appearing for interviews. Besides, it will unnecessarily cloud your mind with ideas and you may not complete appreciate what is taught at your D-school. If you want to know about these topics in general, a glance through Wikipedia should be sufficient to convince the interviewer about your interest in the course. Secondly, you may include some typography work in your portfolio if you wish so. You can use some of these as a source of inspiration.
Have a nice day :)

Hello sir.
I still have one dought in one of the questions of ceed, there is railway station scene and the question lists as:
1.write the problems from the point of users.
2. briefly justify each
3. Illustrate a solutions for each problem through sketch.

Sir what would be the best way to answer thesse and in what it can be best answered.Sir plz do help me in this question.

Thanks & regards
Mrinal

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Mrinal,
You must have visited railway station many times. The question here calls for your observation skills as a designer. A few of the problems can be:
1.There is no safety rail on platform, so the passenger may fall on the track during rush hour
2.Often the stairs on railway stations are not supplemented with ramp, so its difficult to carry on bags with wheels
3.It is not very easy to find toilets on railway station because there is no central information board at many places
4.The chairs provided at railway station are not sufficient
5.The information about the routes is not displayed clearly at many places
You can use this as a guidance to answer such questions. There is no trick to help with this, but you need to understand the situation. The picture provides a guide to you in case you miss out on something.
Best of luck

Mrinalkumarsharma said...

Dear sir,
Thanks a lot for your answer.

Sir ,regarding ceed or nid preparation one thing that i have followed regarding some problems is as listed :

The best way is to divide the people segments as such into: kids, college students, handicapped , blind people, and old aged peoples.
2. Listing down each group behaviour, habbits, likes and problems
3. Thinking solution-analyse each problem carefully and solve how it can be done.

Sir the above process can be very helpfull to every products related to them as well as time saving as far as i feel because every year either in ceed or nid a question comes related to old age, kids, hadicaaped etc. So if we carefully follow these step we can solve any propblem related to cell phones, stick etc. that are related to them.

Sir your suggestion would be needed in this regard.

Hello Mrinal,
This is really a good approach to solve such types of problems! From what i understand, you will try to understand what all problems a blind man will face in using the existing product. How many different and unique problems do you come across using this method?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Shivani,
I really see your concern as I have not covered the Communication skills and GK part anywhere on my blog. If you study the previous year CEED paper you will observe that GK has a Weightage of about 10 marks maximum. Probably a person who reads daily news paper can attempt half of the questions. Secondly, even if you cant attempt a single GK question, but you have done a really great work in the other sections (like visual communication and product design), still your score should be really high enough. Maybe the only preparation needed for GK and communication skill is reading daily news paper and perhaps a brush of your 10th standard English text book :)
Feel free to ask any more questions
Best of luck

Hello sir,
Well sir i got my answer reagrding the child labour qusetion..
Sir there was qustn regarding biomechanics .as suggest the role played by different fingers while holding a tea cup and forces acting on it...?in ceed 2007.
A little help in this question in much needed sir....
Do we need to have a rough biomechanics also.

Thanks & regards
Mrinal

Mrinalkumarsharma said...

Hello sir,
Regarding the tea cup question ,i could comw eith this solution.

Sloution:
1.Index finger: Intitial step towards holding the cup is laid down by index finger. It provides the direction to other fingers.

2. Middle finger: It acts as an substitute to make sure that the force is not laid down to any other dirction.

3.Ring finger: It doesnt do much work.It stabilises the force acted upon.

4.Little finger: Little finger does the finishing work.It makes sure that the force is firmly balanced .

5.Thumb:Most of the work is done by the thumb. It only transfers the weight to the cup ,it provides the necessary pressure or the binding force that makes sure all the actions get together to give sych an impact that can hold the object. It provides the necessary guidance that enables the hand to move freely while holding the cup.It makes the counter pressure.

Force: Our body is composed of positive ions, while the cup has negative ions ,in a way when there is contact with the cup and the body, these two charges gets attracted to each other. Thus the cup is holded firmly.in this case electrostatic force is acted upon.

Sir i am not an enginneering student,so there might be some mistakes in the techincal part.

Well i some other doughts,That i will ask in the meantime.

Thanks & regards

I have purposely not written the post in great detail because each aspirant has a distinctive style of preparing and i just wanted to preserve that style. All i want you to is use these tips as guidelines instead of setting up some rigid methods. And it would be just unfair of me to set up such methods, if at all you need those, for you.

sir,pl give some guidance on this defect finding problems(eg.pressure cooker)...

Mrinalkumarsharma said...

Dear sir,
Regarding the pressure cooker problems: Following are some of the problems it faces.:
1. There is no pressure control system mechanism .
2.Some times the lid of the cooker is not closed properly-So a lid close detection mechanism should be there.
3. During cooking ,food particles jam the steam release.
4.The base of the cooker can be of multilayered as it can prevent the overheating of food.
5. There is no safety indicator.
6. There is no pressure release valve on the pressure cooker. It is generally done manualy.
7. There should be two handles attached so that it becomes easy to handle it , As carrying the pressure cooker with single handled becomes uneasy.
8. In order to reduce the temp of the cooker sometimes it is generally kept under stream of water . The problem of lowering of temp .
Sir if there is any mistakes plz do correct me.

Hello CCD,
The book we were talking about is called Seeds for CEED. Someone has bought it, but i have no idea how it is... so i really cannot comment on it at this point :(

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Mrinal,
While designing products for the kids here are a few pointers:
•The color should be bright and vivid.
•The dimensions of various parts like handles or the bottle tops should be as per the kids dimensions
•The shape should avoid sharp corners, to prevent from getting hurt while playing
•It should avoid small loose parts, to avoid choking if caught in nose or mouth
•It should be resistant to impact or rough usage, since its meant to be played with
•It should not use harmful materials in construction
•It should not have parts that can be easily be put in mouth by the kids, to avoid kids from doing that
•It should have as less stickers as possible, as they might cause contamination
•It should be easy to clean, and must be cleaned each time it’s given to kid
Maybe you can think about more.

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Karshma,
I would need to have a look at your sketches in order to recommend any improvements. you can mail them to me over my gmail address pg2005.pg@gmail.com

Mrinalkumarsharma said...

Thanks a ton sir for all your valuable advice.

I made some of the concepts like:

1. As the kids love to play in the ground with their products , so the bottle can have bubble sprayer technique on its cap ,which the kids love to make bubbles and blow it.
2. The bottle can be like holi pitckari, the bottle can have spraying system.
3. The kids love to throw things , so the bottle can be composed of different colorful tubes of varying radius which can be easily removed from the bottle. So just kids can fix the bottle at one end and throw the tubes in it, as it can be game for them.
4.The bottle can be like puzzle.
5. The bottle can also be used as binocolurs.
6. Kids love to fly kites in open air, so the bottle can be used as to wind the threads which will help them to fly kites.

Sir these are some concepts of the bottle and each bottle has different shape.

Again sir, thanks a lot:

Thanks & Regards:

thx for the reply...

I came up with an answer for the child labor problem..
The problem of child labor can be solved by creating awareness among people through social networking sites like facebook and twitter..To make people realise that we employ child labour in our every day to day activities, people can share the instances in which they have seen children in work.. They could decide to stop purchasing products from stores and shops that employ children and create awarness among the local community by campaigning against those shops through social networking..

Pls give your feedbacks regarding this answer...

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Anand,
You have a good point. You have proposed use of social networking sites to create awareness about the problem of child labors. This can be done by anyone, designer or a non-designer. How do you propose a more designer oriented solution?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Priya,
Thats a very difficult question. For the cut-off you will need to know how many candidates appeared and how well did they attempt. So, if too many candidates did well, then the cut-offs will go pretty high. There isn't much point in wondering about the cut-off, since further each IIT will have their own cut-offs
Best luck

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Chetan,
1. you cannot modify the form as given to you. so you can rely on adding color texture or form as you like for the masculine/feminine car and the shoe problem.

2. The drawing in CEED is to convey your idea. if you find that you can best do it through use of perspectives (like in case of bus stops, tall buildings, etc) you can use it to depict realism of your idea, but that's not necessary as long as the idea is being conveyed in its best form according to you.

I know design is a subjective field but there should be a hint at least :(you know there are plenty insti's which are claiming to provide old exam papers..should I go for those learning packages?

Chetan Yadav said...

For instance the only material I got is this
http://www.docstoc.com/docs/24967691/NID-Sample-paper---PGDPD

Here, I have problem in Section-II, Q1-shadow problem(I really didn't understand what they mean in this ques) Q2-tessellations( what is it? ) Q4-design principle( Is perspective and reflection the ans ? )...
And sir pls ask any of your friends for Nid's exam papers, thanks

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Chetan,
I am myself not qualified enough to answer queries about NID questions, and unfortunately my friends at NID are not much responsive to help in this regards. The paper to which you have sent the link appears that the author has written based on his/her memory. I am sure the actual question paper will be much clear than this.
Sorry for not being able to elp you with this :(

Hey Prasanna, some people say that the global exposure students receive at NID and IDC is very bad and that the faculty are not good enough.. what do u think?? Does it really matter if we do industrial design inside or outside india??

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello PKS,
I personally believe that global exposure is something that can be created with or without going for a design degree. There are famous people in design field without formal degrees. If you want to apply for courses outside India, then it will be "global exposure" just because you are stepping out of your home country. There are too many institutes and too many parameters to really say what is best. Further, its a very personal choice that can determine what works for you and what does not
Let me know what you feel :)

P.K.S. said...

Hmm yeah i agree to that. I am interested in social design, like implementing innovative solutions for development and product design with a social aspect. Do u think i could find a suitable environment at NID, IDC or CPDM ??

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello PKS,
Based on my experience IDC and CPDM are completely in support of social design. For example, even our final year project, Cashew Shelling machine and my internship project, "Braille Watch" was fully inline with social design.
Therefore, your carer goals will be fulfilled there.

3)Info about DAT.
awaiting for ur reply.... thanking in advance!!!!

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Amol,
Thanks Amol :)
1. there is mixed opinion about experience. Candidates with experience in design industry, esp. design studios, are observed to fare better thanks to their skill in presenting design and superior portfolio in general. Apart from that its hard to tell if general experience is really counted
2. you will find some sketching tips here
3. you will find some information related to DAT here

Dear Nitin,
Congratulation on getting a call from IDC.
After discussing with few of my friends at IIT-B IDC, it appears that 'situation tests' are introduced this year. Our best guess is that, you might be presented with a scenario, and you are asked to 'design' your way out of it! For example, you loose the key to the room and you have to get out of it in say one hour. What will you do?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Zee,
I visited the link you have seen, and read the course contents of what they are offering. It appears to be a decent course in visual communication with elements of interaction design. Still I do not know how well the course is executed, since I have no friends who can provide good opinions over the matter. Secondly, interaction design and visual communication have an excellent future as number of IT companies are growing and so does the need for designing new interactions and communication systems.
Best of luck for your future

Hello sir
Last month I was solving the ques of 2011 in which one option had to be selected as the correct unfolded solution to Tetrahedron. Sir, this ques took 45minutes to solve. What I did was, marked each face with a number and marked corresponding no. in options as well then checked. Is there any other way to do it? There a similar ques in 2010 with a complex 3d box to be unfolded.

Hello sir
What is the difference between story board and comic strip? Next question, I'm not able to differentiate between differnt type faces or font, can you help?

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Chetan,
Its skillful to answer such questions. There is a simple technique. You can actually use your eraser for this purpose.
Mark the faces on the eraser (which probably is almost cubical in shape) and attempt it.
It’s a small trick you can use for many questions. Just remember what all you are carrying in your instrument box :)

Hello Chetan,
The question you asked was really nice. It inspired a new post which i have published here

hi prasanna,
i would like to ask u that i am not very good at free hand drawing but quite good at designing mechanical parts and all that , so can u tell me if i could think of doing m.des .

Prasanna Gadkari (M.Des in Product Design from I.I.Sc. ) said...

Hello Prateek,
If you are good at designing mechanical parts, you are halfway towards doing MDes. Just think about a cell phone. It is ultimately enclosed in a mechanical part, viz. the cover. What gives real meaning to any mechanical part is its ease of use, its beauty and how innovative it is!
Therefore I recommend you to continue designing the parts, which you are already good at, just see the bigger picture, like what function it serves, how it is going to be used and what is the ultimate aim behind designing it. Once you have done it, and you like it, you can choose if you want to do MDes or not :)
